Is Trunks any good with a sword?

I think that we can't conclude his skills with what we have seen in the fights that he has had.
Against Freeza, he was superior, so I doubt that he would actually need to do anything fancy to destroy him.
Against the Androids he was clearly inferior, and I doubt that he even dared to try anything fancy in that situation either.
Against Goku, he wasn't aiming for the kill, just to see Goku's defense and powers.

You would want to see a fight against an equal opponent to be sure to see his full abilities.

That's the purpose of my question, though. He's using a typical Western blade, which is swung around like a club. They're basically a weight-balanced, less heavy battle-axe. It's pretty much only the Katanna and Middle-Eastern blades that are used for slicing. Typically, only Royalty and Nobility who knew what they were doing with a sword of this style, as not much skill was needed to get the job done.

So in light of this, does that fact that he was able to slice Freeza anyway mean he was really skilled AND strong, or does the fact that he shattered it on #18's arm mean he was just strong and completely unskilled?

I'd say the former. Given the way the sword broke, it's probably as strong as its weilder.

Look at how clean his cuts were when he chopped Freeza up. If he had no skill with it, those cuts would've been really messy looking.
