I liked the dub's music for that scene. It seemed appropiate and I've seen that done in other shows. Good job with that scene.cRookie_Monster wrote:Did the back and forth scene make you laugh with the Japanese music?
Tracks like Death Note don't bother me if they are appropriate for the scene. That's what counts. You can't say, "This track doesn't fit DBZ at all". What part of DBZ? DBZ is one of the most diverse shows out there in terms of scenarios.

The Death Note like music just bothered me... It made the show feel very unpleasant. Death Note is a show about killing people that try to stop you from killing people, and Dragon Ball is about fighting and saving the world and your friends. It's hard to discribe it well enough, but perhaps you get what I'm trying to say... There may be some intense scenes, but intense scenes don't require Death Note style music. Shunsuke Kikuchi's score and Kenji Yamamoto's score were both able to capture those intense moments without sounding Death Notey. I'm not saying either score is perfect; they all have their flaws.

Re: Wow, the Japanese soundtrack is horrible!
Can someone give me an example of a Faulconer track that sounds like it belongs in Death Note? I'm just not getting the comparison. And if the only example is music that's serious, but is played over a serious scene in DBZ, then I'm also not understanding the criticism.
Re: Wow, the Japanese soundtrack is horrible!
I'm not seeing the Death Note comparison either.

I'm talking about songs like Ginyu Transformation. It sounds too dark and very un-Dragon Ball. I don't care if it was used durring a serious scene or not; it still made the show unpleasant to watch. I like that song. I really do. But not in Dagon Ball.

Sweet, an actual discussion of real *Bruce Faulconer* music. Bruce wrote the original Ginyu Transformation for the scene at 14:39 to 19:00 in this show:

If you have beef with it in other places, that's probably me or Ben placing it into the scene.
Anyway, I thought it worked really well for the Ginyu scene, maybe a little sleepy and long at the end but the climax was pretty awesome. I love his hamonies in that piece, especially when Ginyu stabs himself. I reused that hit a number of times in the Frieza Saga when I became editor (actually might be a bit later..its hard to tell because of the SFX during the power up)

Awesome track, but way too dark in tone for Dragon Ball.linkdude20002001 wrote:I'm talking about songs like Ginyu Transformation. It sounds too dark and very un-Dragon Ball. Too dark for what scene? It was used in very dark places, Frieza getting killed, Goku Ginyu switch, Gero getting killed, Cells death, etc.Piccolo Daimaoh wrote:Awesome track, but way too dark in tone for Dragon Ball.linkdude20002001 wrote:I'm talking about songs like Ginyu Transformation. I thought the track was too dark for the Goku/Ginyu body change. I just thought that scene didn't fit well with that track, but it did fit well with the other scenes you put it in.cRookie_Monster wrote:Too dark for what scene? Re: Wow, the Japanese soundtrack is horrible!
I only remember it during the Ginyu body change with Gokuh scene, and it was just awful for me. And really, all those times you just listed, don't seem very dark. Well maybe Freeza's death, but not the others. Anywhere else it was used? It truly is a great song, but I'm not sure where it would fit in... All I can think of is future Trunk's timeline. Listening to Ginyu's Transformation, I think of the Androids killing everyone Trunks loves...cRookie_Monster wrote:Too dark for what scene? Vaguely back on topic, I've been watching the Saiyan arc via the Dragon Box, and I think I get where Mystic Trunks is coming from...
I would completely disagree that "the japanese soundtrack is horrible", but in this particular stretch of the series, there seems to be a pretty small range of music, and there are many scenes where music seems inappropriately used--actually, it seems like dramatic music is used for ... not very dramatic things. Intense, "Oh, crap, stuff's going down..." music for more comical scenes... o_o
That said, that song I've come to call "Gohan's theme" that plays pretty much all the time when Gohan's hanging out in the woods is awesome and I'm going to go learn to play it right now.

I quite like the Ginyu Transformation theme, I'd say it certainly suited its purposeful name. However, I didn't like it being played when Cell died, kind of put me off.

Are we watching the same show? The Saiyan arc has a wide variety of sound in its musical score, aside from the various Gohan theme variations, but those are cutsie tunes that suit his current personality in that arc.caejones wrote:Vaguely back on topic, I've been watching the Saiyan arc via the Dragon Box, and I think I get where Mystic Trunks is coming from...

As far as appropriate use, I can hardly think of more fitting music, or more epic, than the stuff used in the battle with the Saiyans. Far more intense than anything Faulconer or Menza could come up with.

I always found it a shame that Faulconer's music wasn't used from the begining of the dub version. I'm pretty sure some awesome tunes could've been used for the Goku/Vegeta battle.
The theme that plays when Vegeta dies on Namek is quite epic, as is the music that can be heard when Schemmel's Goku is gathering energy for the spirit bomb against Frieza.
One of my personal favorites is the Namekians' theme that's used when everyone's on Earth, trying to get the status of Goku's battle on Namek.

I agree. It's a very strange song that I would have been perfectly happy with it only being used for that Ginyu scene. I don't like the beginning of it, or the end of it, but that one little bit is very iconic to me. When it's used elsewhere all I can think is "huh... it's not as good here as it was there.."
I also feel that way about Spirit Bomb and Goku vs Android 19.
M-1212 was the first piece of the original BGM I heard in a clip from the internet. It was Vegeta beating up 2nd stage Cell. It was awesome!!

I always liked that Namek theme aswell, it's kinda sweet. Also, the one that more or less became Piccolo's theme is pretty good too, can't seem to recall any particular point where it was badly used.Ultimate_DB_Fan wrote:I always found it a shame that Faulconer's music wasn't used from the begining of the dub version. That strange techno one from Trunk's introduction always wound me up though. Dunno why.
Sorry, I don't know the actual names of these pieces. Maybe come back and edit unless someone can help out?

The later part of Spirit Bomb was actually the first thing I ever arranged for the show

I also did that weird "Future Trunks" one, but it wasn't meant for anything specific originally. We threw it over the Frieza death scene on that last attempt to please Funimation (original music was "Frieza's Death")

It's certainly got more variety than the first post made it sound like it has (I'd apply that more to the season3 Faulconer selection...
