A Request from a "Viejo"

Post by Bardock the Mexican » Mon Mar 15, 2010 1:58 am

Hey all, old guy here. I want to make an argument for something that is a bit against the nature of this forum, but I think that having been a member in good standing will add weight to my argument (I hope  ) which is the following.

I would like to have an off topic forum of some nature, which I volunteer to moderate and or keep within certain boundaries. I know that's been shot down before, but I really want to have one if only because I have lost interest in Dragonball and stuff. I do however love the community that exists here on DaizenshuuEX, and there are people here who really are great guys and gals. My proposal could take the following forms, of which I would moderate without any help from existing staff or admins:

A Spanish Only Section: I wouldn't mind a Spanish section and I'm sure there's people on this board who would use it to discuss the Mexican dub of Dragonball among other things.

An Experiemental "Off Topic" section: Heavily moderated by me, in order to keep it from becoming like 4chan's /b/ or any other "LOL RANDOM XD" board out there. Not my first choice in terms of what I would want, but I can work with it. I have some faith that after what we saw in the Introductions forum, things have changed enough so that this is now a possibility. You'll never know until you try it. I'll be here more and as often as needed if this is done, so no worries about avaliablility for me to moderate.

A ____ board: A board dedicated to Non-Dragonball material, but also heavily moderated and controlled by me or some other individual who will only have power in that forum for that purpose.

I'd go with the Spanish Only section, so that is what I really want in the long term scheme of things. It's good to be back and I can't say that enough. I miss a lot of you guys.

We will not have a Spanish-speaking section, moderated by a native-speaker or otherwise. Yes, we serve a global audience. Yes, we require that all posts be in English. Yes, that's somewhat hypocritical. It is also necessary to have a singular "voice" from an administrative side, and a split in language does not fit in with that.

There will not be any type of off-topic section on this forum. It is not something that fits in with the goal and mission of the website, and is not something we wish to have associated with our website or community.

This is a DragonBall discussion board. That's what I like about it, and that's what other people like about it. We will continue to do what we do best. I encourage you to start up your own specialized website or discussion board if there are other things you wish to discuss, be it in English or otherwise.

We had an (un)official off-topic board that was started, off-site, years ago. It was popular.

Then it died.

I really can't figure it out. I mean, we get threads here like this all the time. People want the off-topic/non-DB discussions. But... no one really bothers to actually contribute to the board. I've tried, several times, to revive Randomness, but it never works. I dunno, maybe posting to another board is just too much work for some people. :?

I'd note that individual people say they want something like that, but as a collective whole, it's pretty clear that the greater community just isn't that interested. There has never been an overwhelming flow of support for something like that. Any time it's brought up, it's just one person... and typically saying, "Hey, this other board has this, so why doesn't this one?"

Well, if we were just like them, what good would we be? :D

Again, we are what we are because of what we are -- and that's a damn fine DragonBall discussion board linked to a damn fine website (OK, and some of those other guys hang out here a lot, too). If we stretch ourselves too thin (especially to things that do not 100% bring people together the way the actual subject matter does right now), then nothing is special any more.

We do have our chat room, which is free to serve as your general-conversational-clearing-house. I understand it's not the same thing as a message board, but it's there for you. It's mostly going to be Pokemon chat right now ^_~. Jacob likes giving up-to-the-minute status reports.

Everyone seems to like giving play-by-play commentary on their copy of HGSS.

No, seriously, in another room I go to we've got, like, three running sets of commentary.

Yeah, it's rare we get more than ten people in a thread supporting the off-topic board idea. It did have pretty good general support back when Randomness was formed, but it died out pretty quickly.

One problem with creating a separate, independent off-topic forum is that many people want it, but when someone creates one, only one or two people join the forum, leaving it dead.
That's why I don't bother with it anymore, since people just like to have it convenient. It's too much trouble to register a new account for those people.
The fact is that when Daizex Randomness bloomed, it was because of it's members at that time. Many of the members that used to post there are gone, and they are even gone from this board. Only a few remain here.
