Ocean Dub Questions
I'm aware that the original Pioneer release of the first 53 (or 67) and first 3 movies were dubbed by Ocean Group, then FUNi took over after that and began dubbing the series. My question is: I was watching Ep.107 "Goku's Alive" on the orange brick and realized that Vegeta's voice wasn't the episode (??) on the DVD. So did Ocean Group dub past that and use Bruce Faulconer's music? Or did FUNimation redub some characters on the orange bricks? I'm so confused. Any help would be nice.

Re: Ocean Dub Questions
Ocean Group pretty much dubbed the whole series for either Canadian or British television only (can't remember which one) but with their own music, not with Bruce's music. But I don't get what you are asking. Do you mean that Vegeta's voice on one of the orange brick episodes has the Ocean voice and not FUNimations voice? FUNimation did redub a lot of early Vegeta and Krillin parts for the Namek episodes. So are you asking if FUNimation accidentally used Ocean Vegeta for a part, or what?otakutrevan wrote:My question is i was watching Ep.107 Goku's Alive on the Orange Brick and realized that Vegetas voice wasnt the episode on the DVD. Re: Ocean Dub Questions
FUNimation did do some redubbing on the Season Sets, most of what was "Season Three". I believe it was Christopher Sabat's Vegeta and someone else's Ginyu? Brice Armstrong?

Re: Ocean Dub Questions
So FUNI did some redubbing on their own dub even after episode 67(53) for the orange bricks? Thats essentially what I'm trying to figure out.
Re: Ocean Dub Questions
Yes, I believe Chris Sabat's Vegeta (and possibly Piccolo?) as well as Sonny Strait's Krillin were redubbed to be more consistent with the rest of the series.
Other than that, various lines seem to be added or removed throughout the series, but rather randomly so, and the most likely theory is that an older audio master was used for some reason that hadn't been given final edits yet.
EDIT: Here's a comparison video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svbY2tgzUfY
Looks like Gohan was redubbed as well (and for good reason ;P)

Re: Ocean Dub Questions
Ocean Productions (formerly The Ocean Group) dubbed episodes 1~67 (1~53) and movie 3 for FUNimation, movies 1~3 for Geneon (formerly Pioneer), and episodes 123~191 (108~276) for Westwood Media.otakutrevan wrote:I'm aware that the original Pioneer release of the first 53 (or 67) and first 3 movies were dubbed by Ocean Group, then FUNi took over after that and began dubbing the series. And as others have said, FUNimation re-dubbed episodes 1~67, and past that, some of the voice actors re-dubbed their lines to make it better and more consistant. Sadly, not all of the voice actors were willing to re-dub their lines. At some point, I believe they stopped re-dubbing lines, but there does still seem to be some differences. Most likely due to a different audio master being used...I guess.

All of the English episodes on the Orange bricks are the FUNimation dub. The reason FUNimation didn't redub the episodes past 67 is because they already dubbed them. They needed to redub 67 so that they can have a complete dub, and not just have the one when working with Ocean Group. Nathan Johnson composed the music for the first 67 episodes, while Bruce Faulconer did the rest of the series. They redubbed those episodes before the Orange Bricks were thought of. Remember DBZ uncut on CN? They were releasing the singles to, but cancelled it.

Yeah, the Ultimate Uncut Editions. It pissed a lot of people off when FUNimation didn't finish it and left them with an empty second box for it.GreggMays64 wrote:Ocean Group(Working Under FUNimation)

Re: Ocean Dub Questions
Well, there is certainly some improvement in the second dub. Sonny Strait especially has come a long way. I don't understand why they simply CAN'T get the armor line right. It's Vegeta's armor that's the older model, not Kuririn and Gohan's. And while the first dub got Vegeta's last line ("I guess...") correct, I have to admit that I did laugh at their incorrect revision ("Shut up..."). Sabat's delivery on that was actually pretty humorous.Commander_Red wrote:It expands to almost any size. *rubs his nipple*ThunderPX wrote: EDIT: Here's a comparison video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svbY2tgzUfY

Re: Ocean Dub Questions
Going by some of the questionable lines left in in the first few episodes alone (the only part I've really watched of the redub), it seems like they just went through the old scripts and took out some of the silliness without even taking a look at factual errors.

Re: Ocean Dub Questions
However, a little bit earlier in the series, the exact opposite happened, there they changed a perfectly translated scene that was hilarious into something of their own choosing that fell totally flat. It was when Ginyu is showing Freeza his dance of joy. In the original (Ocean cast) dub, they nailed it perfectly with Freeza's incredulous reaction of, "Save it for another day..." capturing the humor of that moment as well as getting it right with regards to the original. However, in the redub, they have Freeza say something like, "Stop that or I'll kill you!" which is totally out of left field, isn't funny, and doesn't even remotely match his expression. FUNimation constantly gets things wrong on their own, so why do they have to get wrong what they've already gotten right? Bleh.
