The word "KAI" means in the old North Germanic language Frisian "Kämpfer engl. Fighter" respectively "Krieger engl. Warrior"!

Re: DragonBall Movie 1 Coming To DVD... Again
All you guys talking about the dub assume it was done recently. I wouldn't be surprised if it was done years ago. Funimation did a similar thing with the Case Closed movies, they dubbed some in like 2007, but only released them this year.
About this release though, [Note: I don't actually have the magazine, so I can't be 100% sure] the magazine seems to be reviewing it, yet usually reviews only come out after a product has been released, rather than before it was even announced... It could've been a cancelled release like the former double features, getting single releases. I guess we'll just have to stay tuned.

Re: Curse of The Blood Rubies Coming To DVD Once More
If this does get released, I think I might pass on it only because I want a great quality version of it. I haven't seen 3 of the 4 Dragonball Movies (only seen the Power of One), so seeing all 3 original DB movies in the best quality is something I'll have to wait more for.

I think Tom Dubois of "The Boondocks" said it best for me when FUNimation announced the release of the domestic Dragonbox, after buying all of the Season Sets: "MOTHERFUCK!!! SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT, PRICKS, SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIIIIIIIT!"

For those who are hoping for 4:3; aren't the movies originally intended for widescreen?

I don't care if it's 4:3, hopefully we'll get the Dragon Box version in about a year or so.
Still getting this, only ever saw that movie uncut the one time and the possibility of a redub intrigues me.

I'm just hoping it's 4:3, because if that happens ALL of my movies will be 4:3.

I'm really digging that cover. Hope we get a better shot of it soon.

First off, it is good to be back on the board, thanks to Veggeto EX for helping me out. Anyway I am the one who posted that scan, and it sadly didn't say any specs on the boxsets. But the whole article was ranting a lot about how the dub on the dvd sucks and that is that same dub as before except uncut for some reason.

Let me put it another way for you: Why wouldn't they?Gaffer Tape wrote:Again, that's what I'm saying! What indication has been given that they're going the Kai route on this movie?
FUNimation has been treating Dragonball in general with a lot of respect after whole Orange Brick controversy and it's pleased a lot more people than when they were doing whatever they could to piss off JPN version fans while catering to a bunch of children who didn't care either way.
What makes you think that, after the rest of the Bricks were in 4:3, the DBox, and what they're doing with the Kai dub (bringing it up to standards with the rest of their current dubs) that they'd suddenly 180, re-hire Barry Watson, and let him start pulling words out of a hat to decide what the script is?

Re: DragonBall Movie 1 Coming To DVD... Again
Did I ever say they'd pull words out of a hat? No. I speculated they'd simply use quite a bit of the script they already wrote. Why? Because that's what they have a history of doing. And like Xyex and others have said, this redub could have been in the works for long before Kai, so Kai doesn't have to be a precedent. And considering we still barely know about Kai, it's not really fair to use it as a precedent at all yet. Also, the video quality and presentation of the blue and green bricks and the Dragon Boxes have nothing to do with FUNimation's ability to dub Dragon Ball. That's an entirely different can of worms. Like I said, I strongly believe you guys are right, and that this will be a competent dub. However, it's far too soon to act like it's a foregone conclusion. A year or so of good Dragon Ball-related decisions does not a full 180 make. Like I said, best to err on the side of caution.Kendamu wrote: Let me put it another way for you: Why wouldn't they?

Great way to take what I said literally as part of your counter to what I said. Yes. You're gonna err to the side of caution. That's great. But, considering everything that's happened in favor of people who want accurate script, accurate music, and better picture quality after the Orange Bricks, considering everything about FUNi's GT advertising campaign that they completely went against with the new sets, I think you're just being a little bit paranoid.

Sigh, Kendamu. Just sigh. I'm not sure how many times I have to say, "I think you're right," before you actually acknowledge that... I think you're right. So if bringing up a cautiously pessimistic point solely for the sake of not getting needlessly overexcited is paranoid, then so be it. But since you bring up the GT example, correct me if I'm wrong since I don't have the green bricks and haven't really watched the dub, but when they went against their old marketing of the show and accurately dubbed the original theme songs, did they go back and improve their old script? For that matter, was it plagued with their usual inaccuracies? Seriously, I don't know, so I'm asking. But I don't think they bothered with it. They just copied and pasted it onto the new product. Again, correct me if I'm wrong.Kendamu wrote: Great way to take what I said literally as part of your counter to what I said. Why should I even read the rest if you're gonna take my puns seriously?

I apologize for taking your pun seriously, but, hey, it's internet. Hard to tell these things sometimes. You've occasionally taken my hyperbole literally as well. It happens. Everything's cool.

You're right, they only dubbed the songs and didn't change the script at all. The GT dub was the best DB dub so far, but it tends to get overlooked because you know what everyone thinks of GT.Gaffer Tape wrote:

Well, if that was a decent dub, maybe that's not a very good example. Again, I don't know.
Haha, geez, I only came into this thread to make a one-off joke about how if the dub sucks, one could just watch the Japanese version!

Here is a better look at the article. It says nothing of a release date other then "available now". Very odd. This is the June issue so perhaps this DVD is coming out in June. But if that were true, we (of all people on the Internet) would have known about this by now!

I still maintain that the stuff about the Ocean Dub is an error. There's no way they could have gotten the dub to sync with the uncut footage.

As much as I respect Daryl Surat, I find Ocean to be at least as good a dub studio as Funimation. Dragon Ball-related stuff aside, their work in Gundam has always been decent, and Black Lagoon and Death Note are two of the greatest English dubs for an anime I've ever heard (if they're "so-so", I'd like to hear what he thinks is a good dub). I wouldn't hold many Funimation dubs as high as those two. Overall, I think their average dubs are about the same in quality. Neither studio is as good as Animaze or Bang Zoom.

Now that I've seen the actual article, my first thought is, "April Fool's?" Sure, it's the June issue, but it's out now, at the beginning of April. But I don't really know if this is the type of magazine that would do April Fool's jokes.
I guess my second thought would be, "What the hell?" An uncut dub that was apparently done at least 15 years ago? A mysterious DVD that is already available or will be very soon? If I were saying this out loud, the rest of this post would end up as indecipherable noises like "Blaaaaaaagh wuuuugh."
