DB Movie One Comes Back To DVD, Says Otaku USA, Rightstuf
Re: DB Movie One Comes Back To DVD, Says Otaku USA, Rightstuf
If Monica Rial ends up being really good as Bulma in Kai, then I'd much rather have her for this as well. But I'm okay with Nadolny's Goku.

Rial's Bulma is great, so I'd rather have her. I don't really care either way for Gokuh though. Saffron, Nadolny, and Clinkenbeard all sound good as him.

I would. If Anime wasn't "tainted" there would be no Anime in America period.Raki wrote: I wouldn't say that.

I think he just meant that the Dragon Ball dub was tainted; not, that all English dubs are tainting the original shows. Dragon Ball's dub is better than the one Dragon Ball Z got, but that doesn't make it a good dub; they changed too much.Piccolo Daimaoh wrote:Oh, so dubbing it is "tainting" it? Dragon Ball's dub was tolerable, but not great. It was a big improvement from DBZ's dub, but that's not saying anything at all, because pretty much the entire catalogue of Funimation dubs are better than DBZ's dub.

I'll say that the Z dub was "tainted", but saying that a potentially good dub is "tainted" just because it's in a language other than it's original is false.linkdude20002001 wrote:I think he just meant that the Dragon Ball dub was tainted; not, that all English dubs are tainting the original shows. In defence of the Dragon Ball dub changing things, there were a lot of Japanese jokes that were untranslatable in to other languages. So naturally they had to change things.

First off, I was joking. See the emoticon? But, yes, I would be lying if I said that I didn't hold that to be quite true with the DB dubs. But, no, I don't feel I have the "mentality" you think I do. I am not unable to watch dubs. There are dubs I've enjoyed. As I've explained to you before, I just prefer to watch shows and movies in their native language. And, yes, I do believe that's a purer form. Like you say in your later post, there are just some jokes and wordplay that don't carry over to other languages. I certainly don't fault a dub for that, and I enjoy seeing their creative ways of working around that and respect them for being able to do so. However, I'd much prefer to know what the real joke was. Believe it or not, it's somewhat educational. As someone touting to be learning Japanese, I would think you'd appreciate that. Plus, as someone who has studied acting, I consider the performances to be integral to the production. Regardless of how good or bad a dub cast, having an entirely new one is certainly a substantial change. So, in that sense, I guess you could say I see dubbing as tainting to a certain extent. But that doesn't mean I don't think dubs can be good or that I am "unable" to watch them.Piccolo Daimaoh wrote:Oh, so dubbing it is "tainting" it? No problem. I freely admit that I feel the original of any media takes precedence over alterations and revisions, and I don't apologize for that opinion. But that doesn't mean that I'm not fair handed about it. Just because I feel the original takes precedence doesn't mean I feel that a foreign language dub is worthless or terrible on that basis alone. I'm not the kind of person who bashes for the sake of bashing. When a dub manages to do something good, I'm quick to admit it, and I'll even admit when I feel a dub does something better than the original.

It's good to see that you're open minded about dubs and as I said before, not all sub fans are.Gaffer Tape wrote:No problem. I wasn't even thinking about the jokes (which sucked, in my opinion). I was thinking about how everything that was perverted was changed to less perverted things.Piccolo Daimaoh wrote:I'll say that the Z dub was "tainted", but saying that a potentially good dub is "tainted" just because it's in a language other than it's original is false.linkdude20002001 wrote:I think he just meant that the Dragon Ball dub was tainted; not, that all English dubs are tainting the original shows. They sort of had to censor it because it was airing on TV and yeah, sometimes the jokes weren't that funny. At least that's a thing of the past. I like that they dub certain lines differently for TV (like Geneon did for the first two DBZ movies).

Don't be surprised though if they re-dub movies 2 and 3 as well, sell them all as singles and then release the four dragon ball movies as double features. Knowing funimation they will do that and still sell those movies once again as apart of the dragon box. Personally I will probably get the singles and then wait it out for the dragon box movies edition.

Re: DB Movie One Comes Back To DVD, Says Otaku USA, Rightstuf
That's a good prediction and if it happens it'll be a tough call for me but I think I'd be able to wait for the re-dubs of 2 and 3. I'm anxious to just get the first one so I can put it in FUNi's "Dragon Ball Movie Box" and place "Path to Power" elsewhere. I don't mind the dubs for 2 and 3 so in that situation I'd hold off on the other two re-dubs and waith for the Dragon Box for a consistant cast.DbzFanboy wrote:Don't be surprised though if they re-dub movies 2 and 3 as well, sell them all as singles and then release the four dragon ball movies as double features. If this is legit, I hope Nadolny and Vollmer are reprising Goku and Bulma respectively.
