Dragonball Kai (FUNimation English) Dub: General Discussion
Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
I suppose I'm not surprised about the blood, but... death? I knew censorship standards were getting stronger here too, but it's rather annoying.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
Poor Bardock. Some people might not like that his scar is gone now, but they also took away most of his cheekbone! Also those lines over his eyebrows that I don't know the name of.

Not even 4kids had an issue with scars though. The hell is that about?
As for people calling "Saban-Era Edits" I beg to differ. The edits do appear to be at least close to Saban-era bullshit, but there is one marked difference here. The DVDs and BDs will be uncut from the get-go wheras the Saban Era stuff was edited-only on DVD for years. I'm very glad and very grateful that won't be the case this time.In the case of Bardock's scar, it may simply be an unfortunate necessary evil in order to properly remove the rest of the blood on his face.
This also makes me laugh for the people who were moaning how the Japanese version of Kai was "As Bad As Saban".
I mean, now I think people can see that wasn't the case.

By American broadcast standards, apparently so.Taku128 wrote:Yeah, because Dragon Ball is totally for adults, right?Mewzard wrote:...Milk...missing scar...no blood...no pervy Roshi?...They should have gone to Adult Swim. Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
So they're not going to mention death, but at the same time Farmer wasn't breathing loudly going HEY LOOK I'M ALIVE! So perhaps they'll be less obnoxious about it?
The only thing I can guess about the scar (can't believe I didn't notice it the first time) is that whoever was cleaning it up thought it was dried blood or an open wound. Otherwise what the hell are they gonna do when Yamcha shows up? Chase him around with a paint can?
But what really matters is that the real thing's available. That guy on youtube really did FUNi a favor by letting us watch the unedited clips first- it spread a positive image immediately instead of letting us get confused about how much of this or that was going to be badly scripted and dumbed-down and arguing about it until the dvds came out.

Word. As I've also noted on the main page, there is no confusion as to what (or if) we will see for a home release.DemonRin wrote:As for people calling "Saban-Era Edits" I beg to differ. Unlike a decade ago, we can sit back, smirk at the changes, and let out a big sigh of relief as to how it doesn't affect anything in the least. Other than being hilarious.

I dunno, it doesn't seem like it would be hard to edit around the darn scar.Daizex wrote: In the case of Bardock's scar, it may simply be an unfortunate necessary evil in order to properly remove the rest of the blood on his face.

Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
Kai is already censored (which is frustrating as it is), so it's a little annoying that they would further edit, but not at all surprising, since it's a Nick channel (even if it isn't Nick proper). However, as it's been mentioned, it's not really the same, since there will be a version available on home video that is uncut from the get-go (as uncut as Kai gets, I mean).
It is ridiculous if they'll be removing mentions of death, though, even for TV. Even other action cartoons on TV can do that now.

Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
Don't jump to conclusions. No mention of death =/= next dimension. The same thing was in the CN edited version of Z. Kill would be changed to something like "defeat" or "beat." It's probably just a sugarcoating.bkev wrote:Ouch... next dimension? I mean, even Cartoon Network allowed the mention of death in Season 3 if I recall. I mean, I know they tried to avoid it, but they didn't take it out every time did they? Oh well.
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
Kinda interesting with talk of no mentioning death from guys who made Avatar which had a lot of death. (Granted most of it was offscreen, but they didn't cut around it).
Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
I am so excited to see what they'll do in the scene where Freeza is chopped in half by the Kienzen. I wonder if they'll allow Recoome buttcrack? This is going to be a fun ride.

Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
I think these edits will result in a separation amongst the Dragon Ball fans once again. I can hear the kiddies now "Bardock doesn't have any scars on his face". I'm just really glad we are getting "uncut" home releases and won't have to wait it out a decade to get it the way it was meant to be seen.

They'll probably have him scream off-screen, and then declare about how bad those discs hurt him and then they will draw a body on him for the rest of the scenes where he was cut in half!Blue wrote:I am so excited to see what they'll do in the scene where Freeza is chopped in half by the Kienzen.
When Goku fires the "finishing blast", instead of saying "You stupid fool!!" he'll say "To the next dimension you go!!"

It's not "totally for adults", but it's not a crime to disapprove of censorship, and wish for an unaltered (as far as the series is in Japan) tv release of Kai.MarcFBR wrote:I'm more amused at the belief that he thinks Funi wanted it on AS, or AS wanted it.Taku128 wrote:Yeah, because Dragon Ball is totally for adults, right?Mewzard wrote:...Milk...missing scar...no blood...no pervy Roshi?...They should have gone to Adult Swim. But you see, even Adult Swim edits anime. I remember in Cowboy Bebop they edited the scene in Episode 13 where it shows Gren nude in the shower.Mewzard wrote:It's not "totally for adults", but it's not a crime to disapprove of censorship, and wish for an unaltered (as far as the series is in Japan) tv release of Kai.

Anime in America is usually edited to some degree. It's just how it goes.

Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
I think Funimation made a mistake licensing Dragon Ball Kai to Nicktoons, Nickelodeon would have been a different story because that's a popular channel but Nicktoons is a subdivision and they are doing so many edits by the time you know it Dragon Ball Kai will look like its dubbed by 4Kids

When Goku and Raditz get hit by Piccolo's Super Happy Fun Beam, they'll have cake stains on them.
Oh wait, they already did that one.
