Super Kaioken Goku!?

One thing that's been bothering me ever since I saw Movie 4... Goku powers up, and it appears to only be a Kaioken due to the red tint, but everybody flips out and says Goku has become a Super Saiyan. Did TOEI not know (at the time) that Goku was supposed to be golden-haired when he went Super?
I was going to place this on the question board, but somehow I felt like it belonged to the discussion board a bit more.

No, SSJ was already known at this time, this is bassically Gigi(False) Super Saiyan. It is achieved when a Saiyan has some good power, but not enuff to acctually transform into an SSJ, however they are enraged enuff to become SSJ. This is bassically a mid-point in between Base Form & SSJ.

Well, movie 4's concept of the Super Saiyan isn't really THE Super Saiyan. When the movie was released, the SSJ form hadn't been aired in the anime yet, so the Super Saiyan was still a mystery when it came to the anime. The tankoubon with the arrival of the true Super Saiyan form hadn't been printed until August of that year, whereas movie 4 came out in March. But I'm not sure if Weekly Jump had already printed the issue when the movie came out.

Movie 4 wasn't the only time there was a False Super Saiyan. There was that scene where Goku and Pikuhan fought the Gynu Force, Freeza, Cell, and King Kold in hell. Goku was obviously a False Super Saiyan. Then in the Trunks Special when Trunks was trying to go SSJ, I would say that he looked like a False Super Saiyan.

It's hard to say if any of them were really 'false' transformations, and not just an intermediary point between actually being a Super Saiyan, and not. I would imagine that Goku doesn't have to be SS-J for his hair to shoot up into the air.
As for Trunks, I think the times when he was powering up, were just that... powering up, but the time when his hair did almost glow for a second- could be called the false transformation.

I wouldn't say there is a false transformation. It's just kind of like a powered up Saiyan. Those points where the characters' hair goes up and flashes yellow...that's just them trying to tap into their Super Saiyan power.

As far as movie 4 is concerned, it's a false transformation.

Or just a version of Super Saiyan they put out before Toriyama came up with the real one.
