Dragonball Kai (FUNimation English) Dub: General Discussion
Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
I missed the DBZ Kai clips from Anime Boston before FUNi took them down... Did anyone happen to record these, and would this person, or someone else, please upload them somewhere else?

Also lol on censorshop.

Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
I think it's partly a case of familiarity and partly a case of local creators. With shows from familiar settings (Spider-man, for instance) things will get through because 'it just wouldn't be the same' on occasion. And with the creator's being in the states they often have some degree of input to how their product is handled. With anime, the dub companies just have to take what they can get and be happy, or go broke. It may be a time slot issue. If Kai were airing at night, perhaps they wouldn't edit it as much. Otherwise, I will have to simply chalk this up as anime being edited simply because it's anime, as is often the case.

There are two ways this broadcast version will still be worth watching:
The censorship can be minor enough to ignore or not notice.
Or
The edits can be so bad, that they become unintentionally hilarious.

The word "KAI" means in the old North Germanic language Frisian "Kämpfer engl. Fighter" respectively "Krieger engl. Warrior"!

Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
Let's not forget time slots, too. Generally with TV the rule is that the later a show is on, the less you have to edit. With all of these edits, just how early IS Kai going to be on?
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

Well, it's 9am on a Sunday in Japan I think. Looking at the edits I wouldn't be surprised if it had a similar slot in the US.

Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
That would make a lot of sense, IMO. While the ideal slot would be 4pm after school, a weekend morning slot would be nothing new for DBZ. I have foggy memories of Piccolo in the desert on Sunday morning. I think that was 1996? Or am I making this up?Amigo Ten wrote:Well, it's 9am on a Sunday in Japan I think. Nope, because I remember the Ginyu Force battles airing on KidsWB 6 AM every weekday morning.Innagadadavida wrote:That would make a lot of sense, IMO. It aired on different channels depending on the location. For some people it was Fox on Sunday, for some people (like you and me) it was KidsWB on weekdays, etc.NeoKING wrote:Nope, because I remember the Ginyu Force battles airing on KidsWB 6 AM every weekday morning.Innagadadavida wrote:That would make a lot of sense, IMO. Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
So, let's get some opinions. Do you think this will have MORE or LESS censorship than the Saban days? How about more or less censorship than the... *shudder* average 4Kids hack-job.
Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
For the censored version:
That's interesting in a twisted kind of way! I wonder how they'll censor some harder stuff than blood, or what dialog they'll transform. When the time comes, someone should definately create a comparison thread and devote (sacrifice?) himself to watch all censored Kai on TV, then post pictures comparing the original footage and the censored visuals as well as the perfect-dub lines and their kiddy-dub variation.
For the new home dub:
That's really nice, the new voices are great, and the most striking things is that all lines and performances sound NATURAL, and that's just a huge pleasure.
What I hope they're doing in the process (though I doubt it), and I hope it's the case for the Japanese dub too, is that they keep in store all separate lines from all dialogues for use in the future:
- The Japanese dubbers won't last forever now, and most voices are difficult to replace. Better think of plan to have those voices "forever", so Kai's a good occasion to store the dialogues for any further video game or reanimated remake.
- The Americans really work harder than ever on realistic performances. No doubt they can make the ultimate effort once, but it's likely they won't always "give it their all" every time there's a new video game. Better keep the ultimate performances/translations once and for all and use them.

Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
All separate lines of the original dub *were* stored, otherwise it would have been impossible to do the "dub with Japanese music" track in the Season Sets and Dragon Box.
And I believe this will be less cut than the Saban days, because the Saban days had cuts not only for censorship, but also for time, merging episodes together, etc. I don't believe we will get those, given that the music was left intact (which is next to impossible to do decently when you're hacking up the footage for time).

Yep. The very first time I saw DBZ was at about 6AM on a Saturday morning on FOX. Well Bulma's whole rant was drastically shortened (the entire thing was changed to just "He went out with another girl!). I'm sure that was a time cut.Puto wrote:All separate lines of the original dub *were* stored, otherwise it would have been impossible to do the "dub with Japanese music" track in the Season Sets and Dragon Box.

Yeah, Roshi's line about not having to wait for an invitation was moved to different frames as well. It was all there to cut out him reaching for Bulma's chest while downing his beer. Well this looked like a great thing but the censorship killed it.
