Re: New Dragon Ball Fan
To answer your question- female characters almost never do much in Dragonball. Of course, a lot of people end up not doing much, but I can't go too much further into why because it would just get confusing.
Cool review, hoping to hear more from ya ^^ I haven't known someone just getting into the series for ages, let alone from the beginning..

Re: New Dragon Ball Fan
It depends what you mean by "the first arc". Where do you consider the first arc to end? If you mean the Pilaf arc, then...well, all I can say is it's a classic. Not my favorite, and not the part that once I start reading I can't put down (that's around volume 12 for me), but it's a great way to start the story. I think that's mostly because, like you pointed out yourself, it's simple and easy to get into.Tempester wrote:What did you all think off the first arc?

Re: New Dragon Ball Fan
If the first arc is considered as ending where pilaf fails. then. Its up there as one of my top 5 arcs. right with Namek, Saiyan, RRA, and the early android arc.
Oh, you think the Grand Tour is your ally, you merely stepped into the Grand Tour. I was born in it, moulded by it. I didn’t see the Super until I was already a man; by then, it was nothing to me but blinding!

Re: New Dragon Ball Fan
I think it's great. I love the combination of humor and adventure in a travel setting. I also love the configuration of characters. What with the ever-expanding cast, some of them getting more time to shine than others for various reasons, nothing else in the series really feels like this first arc ever again, and that's a bit of a shame. Still, I love where it goes from here.

Part way through Volume 4, it looks like this is gonna get better for sure.
And when did you first get hooked on the series, I'd say for me it's somewhere in Volume 4.

Re: New Dragon Ball Fan
For me it was different in the way that I didn't get caught by Dragon Ball series, but by last arc in Z and later when they started broadcast Dragon Ball again, it was pretty charming as anime from the beginning. When I started to read manga, I was caught by that humour and Roshi and Oolong's pervertism from the beginning)))
What I love most about this series in anime form is music from Shunsuke Kikuchi.

Re: New Dragon Ball Fan
Aside from some video games and a couple standalone filler episodes from the early English DBZ dub on a couple DVDs I came across, I started off with the four first volumes. They definitely hooked me enough to buy the remaining 38 volumes in 4 goes (5-17, 18-29, 30-34 and 35-42). Hard to point out the specific point I got hooked, but it was somewhere during the first two arcs.

That's a weird question to answer for some people, including myself. I saw Dragon Ball Z first, since that's what was aired first where I lived. It didn't really take me long to get hooked, but I can't say much without spoiling anything.Tempester wrote:And when did you first get hooked on the series, I'd say for me it's somewhere in Volume 4.
Again, I think you're really lucky to be able to read it from the beginning like this.

Re: New Dragon Ball Fan
I liked it, even though it was really different from the rest of the series. The perverted humour can throw some people off when reading it for the first time, but I'm glad you liked it.Tempester wrote:

Re: New Dragon Ball Fan
Finished Volume 4 (I knew I wouldn't mae it last), liking the final round cause the 2 fighters re more or less equally matched. Are these volumes edited (gollancz manga) or not? I heard Viz was editedbut I'm not too sure about these, they look pretty uncut to me.
Will try to save Volume 5, so I'm just gonna read One Piece from the beggining and red Dragon Ball at a slower pace. Tht way I'll enjoy it more as opposed to rushing it where it all passes in a blur.

I'm not sure, but if Bulma's nipples and Goku's boy-parts weren't removed or covered in volumes 1 and 2, then they're probably mostly uncut.Tempester wrote:Finished Volume 4 (I knew I wouldn't mae it last), liking the final round cause the 2 fighters re more or less equally matched. I was going to point you a comparison thread, but it has spoilers, so I'll just post a couple that you've already seen (stealing these from rereboy!):

Viz is quite inconsistent about its edits when it comes to Dragon Ball. Some printings barely have any, while others have a lot. However, after volume 2 there isn't much that needs editing.

Hooray for England and Gollancz! (And nudity!)
Ya know, I remember reading in Neo Magazine that we were finally getting Dragon Ball in like 2004 I think it was, it was truly a happy month, they did this thing called Manga Monday where they'd release new titles every first Monday of the month, and the first month had Dragon Ball vols. 1 and 2, and Yu-gi-oh vols. 1 and 2, it was a fun way of reading the series.

Re: New Dragon Ball Fan
When did I first get hooked? Like most people here, I was introduced to Z first, so I guess the answer to that is around Volume 18.

I am planning to watch the Dragon Ball anime this weekend, just as soon as I've finished watching the current season of True Blood. Looking forward to it, especially the score which I've heard is excellent.
Please tell me I heard right.

Re: New Dragon Ball Fan
The score has a very '70s kung-fu vibe to it. It's iconic and fitting, but not something I'd really listen to on its own. That, and it has the classic Eastern media fault of never being used in long enough spurts.Tempester wrote:I am planning to watch the Dragon Ball anime this weekend, just as soon as I've finished watching the current season of True Blood. Still good though. And in my opinion, it only gets better as the series goes on, especially in Z, where it gets kind of jazzy (and awesome).

Re: New Dragon Ball Fan
Welcome to our Dragon Ball world.Tempester wrote:Hello one and all, my name is Jack.
Now just the other day I was out at my local bookstore (well I say out, I was abandoned). So there I was wandering about the dusty shelves when I saw Dragon Ball Volume 1. I'm not really a manga kind of guy, I prefer to watch anime and see something come alive. But I had time to kill and thought why not have a harmless read.
By Chapter 3 I couldn't put it down. The characters and plot were so appealing that I just had to find out what happened next. My favourite so far had to be Goku, everything about him makes me smile. One thing that stood out to me was the humour, there were times when I cracked a smile and had to hold back the laughs for fear of people staring at me. And then just as I was about to start the next chapter, BANG, parent comes back and it looks like I 'll never get the chance to finish it. But the series caught my intrest and so today I purchased Volumes 1 and 2 (Sayonara Cinema).
I've been aware of Dragon Ball, I've seen the games on the shelf and noticed the DVD's on amazon but this is my first full exposure to it. And what can I say? I bloody love it and if the 5 star ratings on amazon are anything to go by then this series is going to get a whole lot better. I'm planning to read the rest of Volume 1 as a midnight read and might start Volume 2 if I'm not too tired.
So just a question:
Is this the best decision I've made in my life? Am I about to be thrilled, scared, crying, laughing? And what is the basic information about this series? Anything important (nothing spoilerish) that I should know?

I'd listen to it on its own... but I suppose my casual use of music is a bit . . . different. XDCipher wrote:The score has a very '70s kung-fu vibe to it.
