Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
Is anyone really opposed to a little mild cursing in a show where people get holes punched in them on a semi-regular basis? Come on.
Guys. Nobody says "dang" and "darn". Get over it.

I didn't say it was worse, I said it was different. Violence like that (which will probably be edited it Kai) isn't as taboo in TV as telling someone to go fuck themselves.Rocketman wrote:A word is worse than watching someone twist an old man's head around until his neck snaps?Piccolo Daimaoh wrote:Swearing is different to violence

Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
I'm not even talking 'my perspective' here. I'm going with the general consensus both of my local community, the 'general population', and the people I've known on the internet over the last ten-ish years. "Hell" was treated as a swear word by everyone I've ever known since I was old enough to remember. Likewise, "bastard" has always been up there with the rest of the 'top offenders'. Online, offline, and in general media.Blue wrote:I think we already established you and I have a very different opinion as to what is swearing. Maybe in your world those are on the "high offender" list, unfortunately I don't live there and neither do many others I know from the big ol' interwebs. But whatever, keep on keepin' on.
No. I've watched quite a few series subbed, but DB/Z isn't one of them. And it's not that I'm morally offended, it's that I don't see the point. Especially in something like Dragonball where it would feel vastly out of character for to hear several of them swear. Some, sure, they can swear all they want and it wouldn't matter because it would fit them (Vegeta, for instance). Hearing a swear word out of Goku, other than shit or hell, would be weird, and any of them at all out of Gohan is just WTF inducing.Blue wrote:Just out of curiosity's sake do you watch the subbed version of DBZ? I thought I remember you saying you were a sub fan but wouldn't that be hard if you're morally offended by a good deal of the translated dialogue? I'm not trying to sound like a dick I'm honestly just curious.

The violence in Dragonball pretty much always gets 'undone' by the Dragonballs anyway. Note the Saban era "wait till it grows back!" line. If it's reversible, it's not a big deal.Rocketman wrote:A word is worse than watching someone twist an old man's head around until his neck snaps?Piccolo Daimaoh wrote:Swearing is different to violence

Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
Fact is, characters say "kuso" in the Japanese track, which means "crap" or "shit". At the least, "damn" can be used to replace it. Nobody's expecting the characters to drop f-bombs, but for them to continue to say "dang" or "darn" is patently absurd given the gravity of the scenarios in the show.
Really, this debate over cursing has gone on long enough. I doubt there'll be any heavy swearing in the dub, anyway.

Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
I really do want to say, I don't consider Bastard to be considerably up there on the list, considering it's an ACTUAL word for something. It's like Piss or Bitch to me. Shit and Fuck are the top two which I think have no real place in the Kai dub, but apparently Shit is going to be used for some reason. It had it's place in Yu Yu Hakusho, but I'm not so sure in Kai. Honestly, though, hearing Jeice say "The crazy bastard just killed Guldo!" and "Captain Ginyu's gonna be pissed." sounded just right for a couple of intergalactic mercenaries on a mission to KILL a bunch of people. Just saying, even if it is a kids show, there's no reason to be inconsistent.
And I'm sorry, but I have to agree that swear words do denote a certain amount of urgency, peril, and stress. You can't expect someone in a life or death situation to skimp on language. I'm one of the people on this forum who is accustomed to swearing in his daily life. I don't cuss a lot, but I am known to shoot off pretty coarse when I hurt myself or get angry.

Beck Mongolian Chop Squad used it a lot, but that's because it actually fit the setting the flow of the show.Metalwario64 wrote:Has FUNimation ever used that word in any of their dubs?ohaimynameiserik wrote:Doubt we'll get a "fuck" out of anybody.

Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
Sorry, this is hardly important, but it did pique my interest, and I'm quite curious now. Why is "bastard" okay and "bitch" not, when they're basically the same thing? Just wondering.Blue wrote:I must have missed the point in time where "shit" and "bastard" made it onto "the most offensive words" list. Then again I've been hearing people say "hell" and "crap" are swear words so I guess my mind has been corrupted by the evil. The only common swear words I feel shouldn't be included are bitch and fuck. So long as they avoid Funi's One Piece frequency of cursing I'm fine.

Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
Someone on another forum just brought this to my attention. Even though Kai is set to air at 8PM on Nicktoons, that's for the east coast. This will be airing at 4PM on the West coast. So that probably plays a roll in the censorship.

Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
I think this can be blamed on feminism. Like football players slapping each other on the ass and saying good game, but slap a woman on the ass and say good game and you could be getting yourself into a lawsuit.Big Momma wrote:Someone on another forum just brought this to my attention. Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
I don't know, I could see Vegeta saying "FUCK YOU, FREEZA!".
I know I shouldn't use it as backup, but in DBZ: Abridged, when Vegeta gets hit by Goku's Kamehameha he yells "FUUUUUUUU...CK" or something along the lines of it.
It felt appropriate for Vegeta. So, I could see them using it for him.
I'm sure all of us say "fuck"? So, why is it such a big deal. I'm sure kids hear their parents say it. At least, I always heard my Dad swear and picked it up from him. You can't blame it all on TV shows...
Gotta agree with Penguintruth a few post back, no one I know says "Darn it", etc. Hell, when I swear I'm not trying to be cool, it's just the way I talk. Hell, I swear near my parents. They don't care as long as I'm not saying like "Fuck you" directed at them. I respect my parents too much to cuss (seriously or in anger) at them.

Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
How the fuck do you know what the general population thinks? Have you taken some sort of survey I'm not aware of? In your little gang I'm sure you are all offended by naughty words but people tend to stick with other people who are for the most part like minded. Bastard can go unbleeped on basic cable so I don't even know where on Earth you're coming from there.Xyex wrote:I'm not even talking 'my perspective' here. All of my friends, people I know on the internet and in the local community absolutely don't care about swearing. Different strokes I guess!
Herple-derp I'm kind of done talking about this subject now. It's apparent people who are morally offended by naughty words will be morally offended and people who won't be won't be. If you don't like listening to swearing don't listen to the dub or watch the sub. Start a petition to get all swear words removed from Kai. Reach for the stars.

You appear to be the only one who is offended here due to your language/tone.
I'm pretty sure when he put "General Population" in quotes, he didn't literally mean the general population of the entire world.
And also, please don't use "Christian" in a derogatory way like that.

The hell else can "general population" mean? The general population of his state? You would still not be able to notice that without taking a survey.
The Christian Dragonball line is a homage to a christian psuedo-manga which had a panel saying "WHOOPS CAN'T SHOW THAT IN A CHRISTIAN MANGA!". No offense was meant, it's literally something from a Christian comic book. Nonetheless sorry to offend your God ol' buddy ol' pal.
