One thing the Orange Bricks have over the Dragon Boxes

Post by Vegeta Jr » Mon Apr 19, 2010 6:41 pm

They are region free, seriously why did they all of a sudden make the Dragon Boxes region 1 only.

Shelling out for a new DVD player and finding space for it is a ball ache.

This is the reason why I haven't watched a single episode from it, yet I have both Boxes. I miss the days of watching Dragonball on my PS3, with upscaled visuals.

Technically, the Orange Bricks aren't region free, as they only cover Regions 1, 2, and 4. But yeah, it is strange that FUNimation didn't make the Dragon Boxes in other region codes other than 1. Maybe they didn't have the rights to do so?

Well they had the rights when they made the bricks, just seems completely random.

I wasn't to bothered about the DBox being region 1, I bought a region-free DVD player for the DBZ double features. You can get quite cheap region-free DVD players now. I wonder why FUNi made them region 1 only, more people would buy them if they were all regions.

And also, the DBoxes aren't only Region 1, they're Regions 1 and 4. So the only difference between the season sets and the DBoxes is that the season sets have Region 2.

Toei's fear of reverse importation, perhaps?

To avoid any kind of importing from Japan.
As you know, the US Dragon Box is far cheaper than buying Japan's singles (of practically the same quality), so it was probly' a demand on Toei's part, to avoid a loss in sales.
And Orange Boxes ain't got shit on Dragon Boxes yo'. :p

Because chap DVNR'd footage is different from manually-restored footage. Originally, FUNimation had a super hard time getting DBox Z in the first place because Toei wanted it to be a "Japan ONLY" kind of thing. Obviously, some compromises would have to be made to even get the footage if Toei is that strict about who gets it.

Since Japan is a Region 2 country, Region 2 is probably missing because, like penguintruth suggested, Toei doesn't want to deal with reverse importation. In Japan, six episodes of DBox Z, through the singles, is near $40 a disc brand new. Depending on which store you go to, in the US you can get 42 episodes of the same footage for the same price!

Really, the only thing the Orange Bricks have over US DBox Z is that the Orange Bricks have a Marathon Mode feature.

So it's kinda like why the original Gundam is only available in English over here?

Speaking of which, got any ideas as to why the DBoxes DON'T have that feature? That was the best thing about the sets, for me.

Ostensibly either to make room for a "setup" feature on the menu (although that's a pretty pale argument) or because one of the touted selling points of the Boxes were their inclusion of the proper openings, endings, previews, etc. Having a mode to skip over that kinda defeats that purpose. I personally don't mind that it's not there. I'd never use it if it was.

That's probably just about it. For normal DVD's, Japan and Europe (most of it but definately including England) have region 2 encodes and as the Japanese Dragon Boxes are not available anymore then FUNimation's boxes are the next best thing. Toei wouldn't really want that to happen.

Kenny dammy damu pretty much wraps it all up.

That's not really that big an issue seeing as other releases throughout Europe (French release, recent Italian release, Spanish release) also have the Dragon Box masters, and Europe has the same region as Japan.

I'm not sure if the other Europe releases have the original Japanese soundtrack included but even if they do, I think that there is more demand for the English releases. It may not be the reason, but it may be a factor affecting it.

The ones in Europe, from what I understand, have the film masters that were used to make the DragonBox, but they don't have the remastered version of that footage that was used for the actual DragonBox.
