Dead Zone re-release question & Qs about Ginyu & Fre
First of all, is there any reason to re-purchase the upcoming Dead Zone re-release? Will the video quality be any better than the original Pioneer release? Obviously I don't give a crap about the re-dub, but if the Japanese A/V is improved then I'd be all over it.
On another note, do you think there's any possibility of a Ginyu saga re-release eventually? I know it's only 2 DVDs, but the design doesn't match the current FUNimation DVDs and I wouldn't mind grabbing them in a box, just for continuity's sake.
Also, any guesses if FUNimation's going to release the Freeza Saga in a box? I know it's a stretch, but they seem like they'd do anything for a buck or two.

The video quality on those discs of Pioneer's is pretty much shit. FUNimation's re-release can't be much worse. And if the first "Ultimate Uncut" is any indication, the sound seems to be a lot nicer, too. Plus, you've got Steve's translations coming up on these new ones.
All-in-all, if you want it, I'd say go for it.

At the end of the day, it's really a matter of you being interested in the re-release by FUNimation; and as you've already pointed out the dub means nothing for you, so then it comes in the end if you want to shell out the near $20.00-$25.00, for effectively the same thing as the original Pioneer releases, with the likelyhood of a bit better image quality.ignition wrote:is there any reason to re-purchase the upcoming Dead Zone re-release?
Bottomline: It's up to you, if you want to go for it or not.
1.) Unlikely, the two are already out on dvd, and dubbed by FUNi- so there's no point, not even for Ultimate Uncut.ignition wrote:On another note, do you think there's any possibility of a Ginyu saga re-release eventually? 2.) What doesn't match? If you mean the picture on the disc itself, if you have any of the Freeza saga dvds, you'll notice that there are two discs stand stand out in that series- so it isn't uncommon for 'odd' disc types to pop up now and then.
And if it's not the disc art, you'll have to elaborate for a better answere.
Currently no news that I've heard suggests a release of a DVD Box set release, and the only boxed set available now is the VHS. Because of this, I doubt there will be [don't quote me on that, since FUNi does pull things out of their asses once and awhile that you don't expect.] but it's impossible to say for sure.ignition wrote: Also, any guesses if FUNimation's going to release the Freeza Saga in a box? To be honest though, I would rather see a rerelease of the first thirteen episodes of DragonBall on DVD first, but the Trimark/Kidmark thing is still unresolved... and of all things that have happened in the world of DragonBall under FUNi's care, our lack of any coherent knowledge of that situation irritates me most.
But thats a conversation for another time...
Yep, for your needs Ignition, that about sums it up in a nut shell.Sun_Wukong wrote:Yeah, if you dont care about the re-dub, there's no point in picking it up.
What I meant by the Ginyu saga not matching is the cover art. With FUNimation's DVDs starting with the first Freeza disc, they had a caption in the lower left or lower right corner exclaiming how it was uncut, with japanese and english audio.
The Ginyu discs, however, have a smaller, less exclamatory box on the bottom of the cover saying nearly the exact same thing. It's a very small difference, but a difference nonetheless.
The only reason I haven't bought them yet is simply because I was waiting for a price drop, which I just got
Although now I have to still finish up my GT collection and work on keeping current with the Saiyaman and Vegeta sagas.
Oh, and someone mentioned that thing about the first thirteen episodes of DB... I'm digging into my memory here, but I seem to recall someone saying something about Kidmark's distribution rights expiring in 2006.

Yeah, I doubt they would rerelease it for cosmetic purposes.ignition wrote:What I meant by the Ginyu saga not matching is the cover art. The Japanese track on the "Ultimate Uncut Edition" is still plain old mono...
The 5.1 track is in English. FUNimation really did not "re-master" the audio...since it is in English...They effectively made a new track.
One of my dreams is that Toei re-makes DBZ...without their retarded filler (cut away...cut away... cut away....why not make the fights longer, there is plenty of dialogue!). But are all the voice actors still alive?
...of course this is impossible.

Kame-Sen'nin's ain't (his GT replacement still is though). But a lot of them aren't exactly young, either.Tsuranuku wrote:One of my dreams is that Toei re-makes DBZ...without their retarded filler (cut away...cut away... cut away....why not make the fights longer, there is plenty of dialogue!). I know that...they are OLD! Maybe use the same voice tracks clean 'em up and set it to new animation?SaiyaJedi wrote:Kame-Sen'nin's ain't (his GT replacement still is though). Of course it's mono. That's how the show was originally recorded.Tsuranuku wrote:The Japanese track on the "Ultimate Uncut Edition" is still plain old mono...
You can't do that AND eliminate all the fillers (since the story was altered in a few places that can't be "simply cut out"). Also I don't think there exist a voice track seperate from the music track (though I could be wrong).I know that...they are OLD! Maybe use the same voice tracks clean 'em up and set it to new animation?
And if filler bothers you that much, then er... stick with the manga instead.

Tell that to Led ZeppelinDomon wrote:

There's a difference between taking a 291-episode television show and trying to create a stereo mix from poorly-mastered materials...
And something like Led Zeppelin.
Geeze.

Well maybe a couple of the GOOD movies could be remastered. I guess 291 episodes is hard... :pVegettoEX wrote:There's a difference between taking a 291-episode television show and trying to create a stereo mix from poorly-mastered materials...

Also that Led Zeppelin DVD was done from a old mono recording over thirty years ago...It is an amazing job...But, I understand that all of DBZ is much more time consuming and costly.

Exactly the one and only point. There's thousands upon thousands more people that will buy a single Led Zeppelin DVD to warrant completely remastering the audio...Tsuranuku wrote:costly.
Compared to some fans buying the second release of early episodes of a show that's 16 years old from another country.

The thing that NEVER gets mentioned that I want is the Second Dragonball feature, almost inarguably the best of the three original Dragonball Series Movies, to be released on DVD format. Dragonball: Sleeping Princess in Devil's Castle. It is the only VHS from my VHS collection that I never sold off. It is on the DVD rack with my DVD collection because it is the only format that movie is available on. They fight a Vampire, a demon commander, a horde of beasties, and Krillin and Son have some awesome interactions on thier road to becoming friends. Plus some rare Oozaru Goku action going nuts on his enemies. It is easily one of my favorite Dragonball or Z movies overall and I am still sore that it has yet to recieve a DVD format release.
Yeah, when I first heard about the re-dub of the first 3 DBZ movies, it made me wonder why they wouldn't just move forward and try to release some new material instead (ie. DB movie 2).
I think FUNi is longing for the good ol' days, trying to make huge profits off of what used to be new and interesting material. It's getting kind of pathetic, releasing a re-dub of movies they've already dubbed, essentially making fans pay for the exact same thing twice, only now slightly tweeked.
