Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
People seem so sure it will be the use of Son. We ultimately have no idea what it is until someone tells more.
Oh, you think the Grand Tour is your ally, you merely stepped into the Grand Tour. I was born in it, moulded by it. I didn’t see the Super until I was already a man; by then, it was nothing to me but blinding!
Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
Why do people care so much about "Goku Son" being in the dub? As far as I know it's never been denied by FUNi or replaced by another name in the dub.

I'd like to know too. I mean, I'm pretty sure it is used occasionally, but maybe it was only written.

Thanks guys. With all this build-up, I'm going to end up being disappointed no matter what it is.
And just for the record, I don't find the use of "Son" to be huge, considering everything else Kai is doing.

I mean, seriously. Why tease? Be a hero and speak up.

At the same time, though, the teasing pretty well stopped almost 24 hours ago now. All we have to do is wait for someone who ordered from RightStuf to get theirs and tell us if they notice anything.
I wouldn't call it teasing, at least that wasn't what it was initially. It's more like them just trying to raise a little excitement in the conversation.

Who knows, maybe it's a yet-unannounced film that FUNi and Toei are putting out simultaneously?

That's what I suggested a few pages back, but it seems like people are implying it is within the episodes itself.Big Momma wrote:Or the Jump Special

Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
You know, it would be messed up if all of this over-hyping was anti-dub fans attempting to spoil the fun for others. I'd like to think the fandom's beyond such things, but between a friend who verbally insults my tastes on liking the dub voices whenever he can, and a few too many vs topics, I can't be certain anymore. Though, I have a modest confidence it's not, and that was just me being paranoid for a moment.
In any case, we'll know how they manage in a few scant weeks, even less if one of the shipping places sends their copies to people early. Knowing me, though, I'll just wait, and pick it up at Best Buy. Will be a nice post-semester viewing.

Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
Highly doubtful. The folks talking about it are folks that are either indoctrinated with dub fandom to a lovable (if frightening) degree, buddy-buddy with folks in that area of the industry, are genuinely reliable folks, etc.Mewzard wrote:You know, it would be messed up if all of this over-hyping was anti-dub fans attempting to spoil the fun for others.
My guess is an uncut run on Adult Swim (something requested since "Midnight Run" days +1, would mean that Clinkenbeard Facebook post was actually something +1). Not that I care, since...
This is about the same page that I'm on. People keep hyping up without substance (which is not appreciated, by the way) this one little dangle of nothingness that everyone will be into? Really? As far as I can tell, we know just about everything about the series and its dub. Beyond what Rach said in the above quote, the old farts like us really can't be bothered to get any more interested in it no matter what you toss our way at this point.TripleRach wrote:Something that everyone in the fandom would love? I'm an everyone, and about the only thing that could get me to care at all about the dub is if Sabat, Schemmel, and Young were all replaced, and that's obviously not going to happen.
Other than that, does the set come with a free Dragon Box or something? Preferably one I don't own yet?

Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
Sean has confirmed that they simply refer to Son Goku as "Goku".
Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
If that is the case, I would indeed be happy. Imagine so much exposure for Kai, really getting back into the public.
And man, seems a lot of people have been jumping the gun on Kai, I never thought I'd hear a VA get quite so upset over things. Then again, he's apparently confident of how hard he's worked on said dub.
Passionate work can lead to being more sensitive on one's finished product I suppose. Reminds me of when I first started getting people who hated me/my voice on the cast I was a part of. I got rather upset at first, but with a supportive group of friends, I enjoy the ride, and chuckle at the naysayers.
No matter what, everyone should be hopeful of a good, well received dub that keeps the fandom alive and thriving.

The only reason I'm excited for Kai is the dub. I've always enjoyed the voices, just not the god-awful "adaptation" of the script and the music replacement. The people bashing this must be severely misinformed, but whatever...

No-one's arguing that an improvement in the script (one that's accurate), music (one that's not a replacement score), and performances (one directed by someone who cares) is "a bad thing". No-one. Seriously, no-one is saying that. No-one is "bashing" that.
What some of us are saying is that, despite all of these improvements, there's still nothing there to really drag us over to the dark side and find anything of interest to warrant actually becoming involved with viewing the series dubbed.
That's not an expression of "hate" or "bash", even if we do personally think some of those (insert element of the dub here) aren't all that "good". This is just an expression of total indifference and apathy, something the general FUNimation dub fandom has been for over a decade... so I'm not quite sure why seeing it come from the other side should be a surprise.

Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
But, if the work is indeed taken to a high level of quality, of a material you do like, what's stopping any of the fans from the other side of the isle from simply...enjoying both? I find watching both language tracks on an anime set really feels more like a money's worth, and can deliver in entertainment in ways the other version might miss, and vice-versa, or will give a slightly different charm mixed in with the other's charm. I'm just saying that it might be a good thing to at least try this new dub, and see if you can enjoy it along side the original, or try the original, and see if you enjoy it along side the dub, if you are a dub fan. It's not just one side that it couldn't hurt to try some mixing.

I think this is what SonGokuGT is talking about. Not specifically people in this thread.

Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
Hell, no-one's stopping anyone from enjoying both. You, however, can't ignore that for some of us that haven't had a single bit of incentive to check out the dub since the company took over internally in 1999... well, there's still really no incentive other than a bit of morbid curiosity to go, "Oh hey, that's neat. < click back to Japanese >"Mewzard wrote:But, if the work is indeed taken to a high level of quality, of a material you do like, what's stopping any of the fans from the other side of the isle from simply...enjoying both? (Not that people are "bashing" it [though I still might understand that], but rather that it's going on abroad rather than here in this thread.)

Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
If an impassioned attempt to give as accurate a dub as possible, with no extra-censorship (on home format), improved voice acting, and improved voice direction isn't enough of an incentive, then really, I can't see there ever being enough incentive at all, bar un-censoring what Toei did.
Please don't take this as an attack, I just enjoy debating these matters, as I have loved the series for over a decade.
Also, an interesting tidbit:
Seán Schemmel
You also get manga accurate scripts for the most part. In fact, if we get stuck on a part, we dig up the raw japanese translation or the translated manga, and make a decision from there.

You're totally right, and that's my answer -- they lost their chance. Not that little ol' me actually matters...Mewzard wrote:If an impassioned attempt to give as accurate a dub as possible, with no extra-censorship (on home format), improved voice acting, and improved voice direction isn't enough of an incentive, then really, I can't see there ever being enough incentive at all, bar un-censoring what Toei did.
Just as some folks just have absolutely zero interest in watching the show in Cantonese, I have absolutely zero interest watching the show in English.
