According to Chris Sabat, the scripts they got when they first started dubbing DBZ were so shittily translated that the writers just went ahead and wrote their own new scripts while only keeping in stuff from the translated scripts that they could actually understand.

That might explain how Bardock was an average fighter but a brilliant scientist!

On a less funny note, I know that when it came to changing things for censorship, they had to do the thinking themselves. Toei had no hand in HFIL since it was something FUNi stated they came up with in an old as hell issue of Animerica (anyone else remember that magazine?).

Hmm... Well TOEI probably did translate the episode titles. They so for the movies titles. But it's hard to say whether or not they translated the whole show. Wouldn't that just be a waste of money? Especially if it's translated terribly?

I believe Toei did at least give dubbing companies English versions of the original japanese titles. I know this much because in both an italian DBGT website and the polish narration-dub thing of GT, the same rather engrishy translations are there - and some of FUNimation's DBGT English titles also seem to be somewhat inspired by those translations.

First of all, Blue Water's GT was censored, so of course they won't put "Die, Goku!" in an episode title. Hades is an acceptable translation for Hell, especially seeing how they are essentially the same concepts. This is what's known as "Dynamic Translation," where the word may be different, but the concept is essentially the same. Just remember that translation is an art rather than a science.

The only one I see strikingly different is the episode title with #18, and even then, I'm surprised they kept the name "Jinzoningen 18." Then again, I do remember Blue Water somewhat keeping some terms in Japanese, like calling the Sacred Water(is this what Funi called it?) the "Chousui Water," though that still doesn't make a lot of sense.

In other words, I don't get you're point. But thanks for telling me the guy who translated the script's name. I was quite fond of the Blue Water dub. Had all the episodes on my computer too, but not anymore, .

EDIT: Holy crap! Speaking of the devil, I actually do in fact still have all the Blue Water episodes on my computer! Marathon time . LOL@ General Rildo becoming "General Lock." Still never understood that change. Guess they wanted to fit in with the whole tool-naming theme of the Super Cannon Sigma.

Yes, FUNi called it the "Sacred Water" and called the Chou Shinsui the "Ultra Divine Water" which is an accurate translation.

No they aren't. Hades was the entire afterlife, including where good people were rewarded (Elysium), bad people and the Titans were punished (Tartarus) and average people who were neither good nor evil faded away (Asphodel).

For DB and DBGT, Westwood Media translated the scripts themselves. DBGT wasn't even dubbed by FUNi yet, so for DBGT, they had to translate it.
