Innagadadavida brings up a good point, and probably explains why it actually happened.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Dragon Ball had an acceptable dub by today's standards. Most of the changes they made were for continuity with Z. Which makes this continuity move all the more ironic with Kai.

Z Kai is their chance to redo Z, but they have to stay consistent with moves they made to be consistent with the very thing they're trying to redo.

Innagadadavida wrote:I see what they're doing. They're keeping things consistent with their dub of Dragon Ball. Tri-beam was used in Dragon Ball. Tenshinhan (what the fuck, we can't even circumvent the word filter now?) Shinhan was used in Dragon Ball. Distructo Disc and Special Beam Cannon were not. Neither was Gohan's voice actress.

And the new Bulma sounds exactly the same as the old one.

So basically, a new viewer could go straight from the English dub of Dragon Ball, to the English dub of Dragon Ball Z Kai with no continuity issues. I kind of like that move.
I had guessed about a month or two back that if they were to keep it Tri-Beam, this would be why.

Oh, and I should let everybody know my post above was completely exaggerated.

Still is kind of depressing though... :(

"8000!? Come on, that can't be right! It must be broken or something!"

Oh well. Not like I ever really cared either way.

I was being sarcastic. I still would like the dub even if they left in "Special Beam Cannon" and "Destructo Disk".

Yeah, I can see why people hate Tri-Beam, but at least I always thought they got the name from the fact that Tenshinhan always forms a triangle with his hands when doing the Kikoho. So, it doesn't bother me that they're using it.

Is it just me or is Sabat's Vegeta sound a lot more "natural" in the "over 8000!" clip?

Tri-Bream... Is a term I've quite honestly never really liked. But it's just an attack name. It doesn't really bother me at all. Besides, the whole "continuity with Dragon Ball" aspect seems to make a lot of sense. Staying in line with DBZ doesn't matter so much, since this show is essentially replacing it, but it makes sense to try and make things so the transition from DB to DBZK is nice and smooth.

Also, to add to what SSJ4 Furanki said about it, Sabat's Vegeta sounds WAY mellow compared to DBZ.

Welp, Schemmel sounds a little over-heroic to me in that clip. I think I've been looking at Penguintruth's posts too much... also, Nappa's more obnoxious than ever. Is that good or bad?

I kind of agree with you. I'm really hoping that it sounds a little more natural in context.

"Tri-Beam" doesn't bother me either because it doesn't sound weird and corny like "Destructo Disk" and is relevant to what Tenshinhan actually does in the attack.

Yeah, much better work on Vegeta and Nappa now. They don't sound like they're having a hard time speaking when reading those lines.

Bullshit to all of you who are saying they didn't push "OMFG DIS IS DA WAY DARGONBALL WAS MEANT TO BE SEEN!" on their blogs. They were shouting about how they were making this as close to the original as possible which they clearly aren't. That was their whole freaking selling point on this terrible product.

After that gem of a clip it looks like I'll pass on watching this dub too. Maybe they'll get it right in the next 10 years or so. As of now it looks like the anime version of Viz's translation of One Piece. Censored footage using a huge amount of wrong terminology and naming schemes all with "spiced up" dialogue to round things out. Looks like I'll be investing in the Dragon Box instead.

(Yeah I know the censored footage isn't Funi's fault.)

It sounds pretty good, but why the fuck is Nappa screaming every single line?! :x
