Finish Dragon Box sets or begin Z Kai sets?
In the midst of the upcoming Z Kai DVD and Bluray releases, I was wondering; should I go for the Kai sets, or finish the Dragon Boxes? (already have the first two DBox Sets)

Um, I already stated this in another thread, but whatever.
First and foremost, finish off the Dragonboxes. Just trying to stick to one series at a time here, people!
As for watching Kai, I'll just have to watch the Nicktoons broadcast, as I'll have no way to buy the DBZ Kai sets if the cash is going to the Dragonboxes.

Next quest: Buy the Super: Broly and Super Hero Blurays, also Daima whenever that releases in the states. Also the Super Manga!

Why not buy both?
Re: Finish Dragon Box sets or begin Z Kai sets?
Eh...why buy Kai? It's really got nothing over the DragonBox in my opinion. A few minor fixes with the art here and there, but nothing that screams "BUY ME!!!" Don't waste your money on an unstable (i.e. take out this material, leave in that material, draw this scene well, draw this scene horrifying, etc), more expensive form of the series when you can get the whole shabang for less.

Depends on what show you prefer. I prefer Z quite a bit, so I am going to get the Dragon Boxes first. Not only that, but in the bigger picture, regardless of whether or not you prefer it this way, with Kai, you are literally paying more for less (or, depending on where you buy it, around the same. Point still stands, though).
I will get Kai sometime afterward though, because I do still enjoy it, and having a pretty accurate dub seems tempting. Though to me Z is a classic, and Kai is just a pretty good re-cut. Kai also has severe pacing issues towards the beginning as well, so I'm in no rush to own the earlier episodes. Hopefully by the time I get Kai, the prices will be quite lower, and they might even release "full season" or "full saga" sets down the road.

If you're strapped for cash I say drop the Dragon Box sets and buy Kai. You'll enjoy it more.
If you're not strapped for cash, then buy both.

Re: Finish Dragon Box sets or begin Z Kai sets?
Assuming they keep the 13 episode average and don't go crazy, the third Kai set will end around the same point in the story that Dragon Box 2 does (Freeza's final transformations). So if you switched to Kai now, you wouldn't get to a newer point in the story until the fourth set. In other words, even if you subtract and ignore the filler, the Dragon Boxes still cover more of the story. And since the prices are similar, it makes the Dragon Boxes seem like a much better value. Not to mention the fact that you'd get to finish the collection sooner, since there will (more than likely) be less sets to worry about, and it's nearly halfway through being released, while Kai is only just getting started.
I also think it's better to finish a collection you've already started before starting a new one, unless you'd want to get rid of your Dragon Boxes and replace them entirely with Kai, then I guess it wouldn't matter. But if it comes down to that kind of choice, I personally think the original DBZ is still better. The music and acting (at least on the Japanese side) is generally superior, and the original animation seems to flow better, since most of the reanimated scenes in Kai look out of place, if not awful. The HD aspect doesn't even appeal to me either, because the Dragon Boxes already upscale pretty well, and I'm not particularly impressed with the job Kai's done with it. (Having said all that, I do plan to buy the Kai Blu-ray sets eventually, but it's much lower priority to me than the Dragon Boxes are.)
But obviously my vote is for the Dragon Boxes, for both objective and subjective reasons.

Personally, I'd snag the DragonBox sets. They're, in my mind, the most definitive version of the show that won over audiences all over the world for 20+ years. Besides, knowing FUNimation, they'll milk Kai again later on with more extravagant releases for less cash (or, at the least, the price will drop).

A domestic release of Kai was a foregone conclusion from the day it first aired in Japan. The DragonBox collections, on the other hand, were pretty touch-and-go there for awhile. FUNimation paid out the ass to bring over the Boxes because there were indications of a potential market, and I would suggest that we prove them right so that future releases of things like the Movies and possibly the other two series become worth FUNimation's consideration and/or investment.

Pretty much my feeling on the matter. Kai I am going to pick up eventually just to check out the English dub.snaku wrote:I'm getting both at my leisure.

Definitely the Dragon Boxes. This is how we've been clamoring for the series for forever, and it's not even that big of a request: everything as close to the original as possible, including all previews, recaps, proper title cards, credits. It's just the series at an affordable price in good quality. Amazing it's taken us that long to get it. And now that we have, it's our duty to support it to show FUNimation that this is the kind of release we want and expect for all of their properties.
Kai is the new hotness. It's not going anywhere, and, hopefully it will have a better quality and higher value release later down the road. Dragon Boxes need all the support they can get.

Pretty much this. If you'd like to see DB, GT, or the movies have a chance for a DBox release, show them you want it by buying the Z sets. Dragonball Kai is not really needed in my opinion. I'm just going to buy one or two. The DragonBox however is the main series and I'm going in for all of them. Get the main series, that's the way it was intended to be watched. Kai was just made to make DBZ famous again.

As a Kai fan, I can say for sure that you should get the Dragonbox. It's not limited-edition, but it is something of a question in terms of how good it'll do and whether or not we'll get the DBox Z movies out of it. The better it does, the more likely we'll get the movies. We want the movies and the series is good, too. So, get the DBox. Worry about Kai later. By the time the DBox is done, the Kai releases you'll have to catch up on will be dirt cheap since they'll have been out for awhile.
