Embarrassed watching DBZ?
Re: Embarrassed watching DBZ?
I don't get embarrassed watching DB, I do sometimes get embarrassed buying something DB related if the clerk is an attractive woman, because I am in my mid twenties and I am buying a child's show, lol.

Well...those two are pretty much the same thing.

If you're ashamed then you actually feel bad for doing what you're doing. Being embarrassed is just feeling a bit bad because somebody caught you doing it.

I think this is a pretty awesome outlook. It's sort of a paradox, but as hardcore as I am about Dragonball I'm also very "not serious" about it. It's hard to explain.Cipher wrote:As far as the whole "children's cartoon" thing goes, I stand by the idea that how embarrassed you should be for watching them is directly related to how seriously you take them.
That's my way of letting otherwise normal people off the hook.
Still, no big public discussions about Dragonball, though. I attract the kind of people I don't wanna talk to that way.

Re: Embarrassed watching DBZ?
This is more or less what embarasses me. With the kind of company I keep nowadays, I can't be heard bringing DB up in conversation in too serious a capacity, because it simply alienates me from the more "adult", real world around me. Man, growing up sucks!Kendamu wrote:

And when you said you don't discuss it in public because it attracts attention you don't want, I see exactly where you're coming from. Not to be nasty, but one guy in my class heard me discussing the series with another anime fan, and keeps trying to get me into conversations about Yu-Gi-Oh! and, uh... there are girls around man.

Well, when I say that it attracts the kind of people I don't want to associate with, I meant it more often than not attracts the kind of fan that makes DBZ fans look bad in general. Y'know, the kinds of unintelligent fans that fans of other anime and games tend to make fun of because they can barely make their point and they're always flying off the handle about the weirdest things. That kind of fan tends to find me a lot in person, too.ShonenKnife wrote: And when you said you don't discuss it in public because it attracts attention you don't want, I see exactly where you're coming from. That, or they attract the type of anime/manga fan that considers Dragonball to be "not real anime" and that "real anime fans" don't watch Dragonball. I don't like those guys, either. They just don't seem to understand what significance Dragonball holds in terms of how their "real anime" like Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece even came to be!
That's what I mean.
The only reason I keep quiet around other mid-20s adults about Dragonball is because many of them have no interest in Dragonball so I don't bore them with stuff they don't care about. I have friends who love Baseball but I don't care for it, so they give me the same respect in not boring me with talk about Baseball. If I wanna talk Dragonball, I have other friends I can talk Dragonball with. If they wanna talk Baseball, they have other friends they can talk Baseball with.
It has nothing to do with Dragonball being for children. We don't have that stigma at our age. I could talk to the exact same people about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Voltron or something like that and they wouldn't shy away out of shame. They'd instead get all nostalgic and talk about those things with me. Then we'd go sit on the porch and tell those damn kids to get off our lawn with their damn Ben 10 and reminisce about "when cartoons were good."
Looking back on those shows, cartoons were never good after the first few episodes 99% of the time.

Re: Embarrassed watching DBZ?
I'm never embarrassed of Dragonball. I tell people that I like it and when people react in surprise or give me a weird smile, I tell them that it's not a kids show and they just say, "oh, I didn't know that".
Most of my guy friends still like it though and they're all my age, 22.
Re: Embarrassed watching DBZ?
But Dragon Ball is a kid`s show. It is intended for an audience of young males (kids and teenagers) as most shonen series are.
That however doesn`t mean that older people can`t enjoy it for the great series that it is.

Ok, but if he knows that then he is definitely embarrassed by it because he feels the need to tell something to his friends that he knows it isn`t true. Which contradicts with his statement of not being embarrassed.
Re: Embarrassed watching DBZ?
I'm not scared! I'll make my facebook default a picture of Goku right now!! Then I'll post something on the Daizex page!
Quick, someone tell me what to put (Make sure it's reasonable, though...)!

Re: Embarrassed watching DBZ?
But... Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z are intended for the same exact age group, as is the manga (kids and teenagers).
Dragon Ball was a Shonen manga published in Weekly Shōnen Jump which was then adapted and the story divided into anime form (Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z).
You can see for yourself the meaning of shonen here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sh%C5%8Dnen
And this link tells you it was published in Weekly Shōnen Jump : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon_Ball
Basically, Dragon Ball is like the normal comic of Marvel, DC or Image. It is intended for a young crowd but that doesn`t mean that there are no older fans or that those fans should be embarrassed by their interest in the comic.

I think you're getting exactly what I was saying. I mean, obviously we can all come here and get our nerd on for a little bit, and maybe even discuss the series in a serious way. But as long as at the end of the day you have the ability to say, "Yeah, I just like to chill out with a children's cartoon sometimes," there's nothing to be embarrassed about.Kendamu wrote:I think this is a pretty awesome outlook. Oh, anime fans. Bane of many a Japanese class. There are normal people out there who like an anime or two; I've met them. They're just hard to come by.ShonenKnife wrote:And when you said you don't discuss it in public because it attracts attention you don't want, I see exactly where you're coming from. I saw this on yummypixel's livejournal and thought this: http://i40.tinypic.com/wta8hh.jpg (and the actual post it was contained in) was very relevant to this thread.

I think that's what I'm trying to say. I can get my nerd on with the best of 'em but at the end of the day I tke that hat off and try not to be too serious about a cartoon.Cipher wrote:I think you're getting exactly what I was saying.
