Wishing the Dragon free

Post by Coycoy88 » Sat May 01, 2010 7:55 am

Most people view the Eternal Dragons as beings that only exist for the sole purpose of granting wishes, and that's that. But just the other day my brother and I were watching DBZ, and out of no where he asks me, "Do you think that someone could wish Shenron/Porunga free from the Dragonballs? Kinda like how Aladdin wished for the Genie's freedom from the lamp? and if it could be done, would the Dragon still retain it's magical abilities?" I really didn't know what to tell him. xD I never really thought about that. I'm curious to what you guys think of this.

I always get the impression that if it weren't for the summoning, Shenron would be content to just sleep in the depths of the Earth for all eternity. :(
Interesting question... if it were doable, what would happen? :?

If the creator dies, the DBs become inert. If the DBs are inert, no dragon. I think ''freeing him'' would be impossible, because seperating him from the DBs would be like making the DBs inert from his perspective.

Although, this would make for an AMAZING post-Boo adventure story that could star just about anybody and not have to be ''Oh my God, if we don't create more SSJs and power-ups the Universe will explode!!'' in theme. Imagine Bulma summoning Shenron to show little Bra, and then Bra wishes him to be free. Then the dragon roams the Earth granting every wish he overhears somebody absent-mindedly make one. The reason he needs to sleep is so that he doesn't transform into some kind of fighter/monster. That sounds like a classic DB storyline! :)

Instead of something AWESOME like this we get 3 Brolly movies. Just...let that sink in.

In the same vein of thought: is the dragon considered to be a god like Kami or more similar to a steward to Kami like Mr. Popo?

Although the Dragon might be a living creature, he is more of a tool than a person. It is an awesome idea but I doubt it would work (wishing it free).

He is called a dragon god but, as I said, he is more of a tool than a person. He only exists to fulfill his duty and, when he is not fulfilling it, he doesn`t exist or he simply sleeps. So I don`t know exactly how to classify him.

I suppose you could free him from his duties, but I'm not sure if it would be possible to separate him from the Dragon Balls. I think it's implied in one or two places that the Dragon Balls are a part of the dragon's entity; basically, the form he takes when he rests between summons.

You know what? I honestly think they could wish Shenlong free, but the question is: why would they?

So they don't have to spend a year waiting to collect 7 tiny fucking orbs. That's why
Oh, you think the Grand Tour is your ally, you merely stepped into the Grand Tour. I was born in it, moulded by it. I didn’t see the Super until I was already a man; by then, it was nothing to me but blinding!

But if they wished Shenlong free, the balls will be inert.

That's what I think would happen. The Dragonballs would most likely turn back to stone, just like they would if the creator died. Aha, I'm curious as to what Shenron/Porunga would do with their new found freedom. Go around the earth/universe helping those in need? Go away somewhere far away, and lead their own personal life? And if they still had their magical wish granting powers, just imagine all the good they could do.

Isn't this basically what happened at the end of GT? Sorta? Kinda? A little?

I'm thinking of when the Dragon tells Bulma and the gang that he can't exceed the power of his creator. He is dependant on Kami's power, and his life depends directly on the life of whoever created him. If you were to somehow remove him from the balls, and thus a position where he can utilise the power given to him, will he still be able to grant wishes, or even exist?

One way would be to go even farther and wish for the Dragon's existence and wish-granting abilities to be completely independent of his creator, but that is either pointless (would be a boring plot-device if it were ever explored) or reckless. I can imagine a revenge mission a la GT where the Dragon turns on those who have abused his power for so many years.

It's basically a Kami - Piccolo deal. One can not live without the other, the Dragon would simply say it is not in his power to grant such a wish.
