I don't know. The Star Wars movies constantly make use of a totally different written language that the "English"-speaking characters all read. But I guess we're getting off track here.

...in the SE, Gaff, in the SE - which I know you loathe. :p. Star Wars used English, which was replaced with Aurabesh, and then ROTJ has... Galactic Basic or something.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
I was referring to the sequels. I thought about mentioning the SE change in the first film, but I didn't think it was worth getting into in this environment. Let's just take it on back to the OT boards, kev.

I'm not saying that people who don't mind the "Speak Japanese instead of English" line have bad taste or anything. I just think that by so blatantly pointing out that a show is in fact dubbed takes the audience out of the show, as brief a moment as it might be. I think I can be thankful that DragonBall doesn't have those kinds of situations to work around. The puns can be trouble but then again they were never funny to begin with anyway so who really gives a shit.

No, I get what you're saying, and I agree to an extent. It's just that, for me at least, when I see characters bopping around shrines and talking about Tokyo and Akihabara, I think it's pretty obvious that they are most likely, in fact, speaking Japanese. Any attempt at dubbing that into any different language is going to "point out its dubness" by design. So if we're willing to accept that in the first place, I don't see referring to their language as any more disbelief-breaking than anything else.

I grew up on the dub, but once I heard the original, I never went back.
