Relation between movie #1 and Garlic Jr. Saga
What exactly is the relation between these two story arcs? Is the Garlic Jr. Saga supposed to be a "sequel" of sorts to movie #1? Do they make references to the events of the movie during the Garlic Jr. filler saga? Or is the filler saga supposed to be like a "re-telling" of the movie's story? I would check my Garlic Jr saga DVDs, but they are currently located at my other residence and I don't have access to them. I've never seen movie #1 either.
I know that everything in question here is filler, but still, it's interesting if they worked a movie character/story arc into the main series.

Yes, the Garlic Jr. saga is something Toei would be doing later on in GT--bringing filler and movie characters to the main storyline. Basically the Garlic Jr. story arc was brought into Dragon Ball Z to sort of take up time between sagas. But if Garlic Jr.'s original encounter with the heroes occured like it is implied in the saga, the characters must have had a sudden case of amnesia. That's just another case of contradictory filler. The movies are just original stories adapted from the current story arc, but are supposedly supposed to take place in the actual storyline. One could argue otherwise, but it could be that Toei actually intended their movies to be part of "anime canon."

Yeah, I've never seen movie #1, but I do know the basic premise, and that it is supposed to occur before Raditz's arrival, hence it not making sense as Kuririn and the rest don't remember Gohan during the Raditz arc, although they met him during the movie, right? I guess inserting the Garlic Jr. story arc in the main series reinforces the whole "amnesia" thing. Just one of the problems with movies/filler.

Lets think of the movies as an alternate dimension, since they have no connection to the one were familiar with, in the anime series.ruffriles19 wrote:Yeah, I've never seen movie #1, but I do know the basic premise, and that it is supposed to occur before Raditz's arrival, hence it not making sense as Kuririn and the rest don't remember Gohan during the Raditz arc, although they met him during the movie, right? And as far as the Garlic Jr. saga goes, it's a cia coverup. The truth is out there!!!!11onesix

The Garlic Jr. Saga even conflicts with it's own source material. Gohan's not even 10 yet, so it's been under 5 years, and Garlic Jr. mentions he was trapped in the Dead Zone for 10 years...

He was 4 when DBZ began (yes I know the dub says 5.5), so it's been under 6 yearsXyex wrote:The Garlic Jr. Saga even conflicts with it's own source material. Gohan's not even 10 yet, so it's been under 5 years, and Garlic Jr. mentions he was trapped in the Dead Zone for 10 years...

I seem to recall someone saying it was in the original as well. Though, I could be wrong... it's been a while.

Watching the original version right now, it notes that nearly 10 months had passed since the battle with Freeza had ended in the first scene, that should be enough to get an actual date (or rather something close to one being you have to match it to a movie), though I'm certainly too lazy (and care too little) to bother doing it right now
EDIT: As far as DBZ movie 1 goes I cant recall any ages being given during it, which I guess means you could have to deal with that annoying gap when trying to manufacture some sorta date. I'll have to rewatch the whole arc later to see if any specific periods of time are mentioned.

Well we know at the start of DBZ, he was 4, then when Nappa and Vegeta arrive, he was 5, and after the Freeza saga when they are reviving everyone, 6-7 maybe? I know a year or so passes after the saga, but it's been a while since I've seen it so I can't remember exactly. This would put the Garlic Jr. Saga around then since I think it came right afterwards. So the 10 year thing is wrong, unless time just passes differently in the dead zone.

Well, let's whip out the ol' time-line shall we?
So. Gohan's still five on Namek, six when Garlic Jr. shows up, and seven when Freeza/Trunks show up and Goku comes back. Now, here's the fun thing. With Garlic Jr. being included in the anime time-line they also added the first movie. Only a year though, no month or day:757 A.D. Sometime in May, Gohan is born.
762 A.D. December 24th The Ginyu Force are destroyed.
Piccolo is revived. Krillin is killed.
Goku becomes the Legendary Super Saiyan and defeats Frieza.
The planet Namek blows up.
763 A.D. Sometime in October. After 5,000 years the Makyo-sei approaches Earth and Garlic Jr. is freed from his Dead Zone.
But he is again defeated by Gohan and trapped for good in the Dead Zone since the Makyo-sei is destroyed.
764 A.D. Some time in August. Trunks arrives. He kills Cybord Frieza and King Cold.
Goku returns to Earth.
So we do know it (supposedly) happens somtime between the first of the year and October 12th (when Raditz arrives). Which means Gohan's either 3 or 4 at this time. Ya... At the MOST it's been 2 years and 10 months. A far cry from 10 years. XD761 A.D. Goku, Piccolo, Krillin, and Gohan battle Garlic Junior and send him into his Dead Zone.

Haha, you can't really take stated amounts of time too seriously in DB. Not only the "5 minutes" on Namek, but also in the Tenkaichi Budokai. Every single time a character gets knocked down, 10 seconds easily passes, but the count for some reason gives them much longer to get up. I guess this could be a product of the conversion from manga to anime though.
But about the "10 years" comment, I don't remember that from the original Japanese version Garlic Jr episodes, but it has been a long time since I saw them, so it could be in there. But it might be a dub mistake too.
