I don't think it matters if he buys it online or in a store... Freeza will still have a head for a hand in that frame regardless.

Most likely cover art either in July or August if it'll be released in September.

I've seen people use this shot as an example against Kai's re-animated scenes:

But... the Z shot looks the same...:

Not only that, but the shot is only on-screen for half a second, so it isn't noticeable unless you are watching the show frame-by-frame...

Yeah, it's especially noticeable on his left arm, where that tiny stream of blood became a large gash!

Anyways, I (probably pointlessly)decided to compare that macroblocked scene from the Dragon Box to the Orange Brick:
Image
Image
In the first shot, the Orange Brick probably technically has more noise and compression, although it's clearly more pronounced on the Dragon Box... It's definitely more noticeable on their skin in the Dragon Box, but it clearly looks worse on Goku's pants on the Orange Brick footage... It's a shame though, but I still wonder if it is compressed at all on the Japanese Dragon Box footage... In case an episode number is needed, it's at the end of episode 102: "Let's Get It On!! Two Remain On a Vanishing Planet".

Image

In the second shot, the Orange Brick mostly suffers from FUNi's "remastering" (noticeable on the smearing of Frieza's after-image head, and the lines being removed from the scuffs on Goku's right arm), but noise-wise looks like it has more colorful mosquito noise going on in Goku's hair, but again the compression is more noticeable on the Dragon Box. I'm guessing the "smoothed"(smeared) footage of the orange bricks is simply easier to compress than the grainy, sharp Dragon Box. Not to mention the extra video and audio animation being packed into those discs...

Also, another scene really jumped out at me while watching it on my TV. It was during the scene where Goku and Frieza have a "beam struggle" at the beginning of episode 100: "I Am Son Goku's Son!! Gohan Returns to the Battlefield" When Frieza flies out of the blast, it looks okay regardless of the flashing:

Although, when he starts to rotate... the image falls apart:

I just don't get it. Is FUNimation's encoding slipping? I never noticed this much compression on Dragon Box 1 or 2, even in incredibly flashy scenes such as Goku and Vegeta's beam struggle.

Well, it wasn't Kai I was comparing it to, it was FUNimations previous "Season Set" release (although I am curious to how that scene will look on FUNimation's Kai release). And besides, I think Kai looks equally as bad in that scene, because of the intentional frame blending, which looks like bad ghosting, and is a nightmare in motion.

I know that's the season set. I think Kai reanimated that scene but I don't know can you compare Funi's DBox Z with Kai

I don't have a good enough quality rip on hand to do so. But I do know that the scene was indeed reanimated.

Episode 52. Here is the best quality screenshot I could get:

Well, it's from a very low quality YouTube video, so it's expected to have terrible compression. It should look much better on the DVD and blu-rays, but even then I don't know if it would look better than the Dragon Box shot due to the ridiculous frame-blending.

(Sorry, it's 3 in the morning where I am, and I get a bit silly at this point in the day... night... morning... whatever)

Oh, and did I mention those darned kids need to get off my lawn?!

I highly doubt either issue is related to Dragon Ball's age. The compression is likely either due to a faulty source, or FUNimation putting too much information on the discs, and the Kai shot is due to a stylistic decision.

I still love the Dragon Boxes, and I guess some compression can be forgiven, and even expected. I'm merely pointing out the more glaring examples I notice. To be perfectly honest, I can definitely live with those two examples if it means the benefits of the rest of the footage.

Why wait 20 years to make an anime of a manga that's been around for so long?
