What has Dragonball done for you?

Post by .:PoetikaL:. » Mon May 24, 2010 1:54 pm

Let me elaborate the title a little bit better:

What has the show done for you in general when it comes to anime? Did it let you introduce you to more exciting shows? Did it open up something that helped you accomplish something in real life? Did it motivate you to collect something from the series itself or another? Post up what the show has done to/for you.

I think Tom Dubois of "The Boondocks" said it best for me when FUNimation announced the release of the domestic Dragonbox, after buying all of the Season Sets: "MOTHERFUCK!!! SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT, PRICKS, SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIIIIIIIT!"

The main thing it accomplished for me was keeping me from buying so many other stuff I have interest in and killed my social life throughout high school.

And I discovered anime through it.
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

01- Being on this forum, it taught me to buy official releases and stop downloading bottleged torrent rips.
02- The manga helped a lot with my drawing skills, and changed my life with drawing a (sorta) popular Arabic web-manga ((Currently (still) negotiating an official publication)).
03- I guess it was the first anime I watched in Japanese with my first GT and Movie 8 DVDs. It made me a fan of the Japanese version and now, I accept nothing less than the original Japanese version.

Dragon Ball didn't introduce into more exciting shows (since the first anime I ever watched was Pokemon), but it's pretty much the only manga/anime that I am into. It got me more interested in Japanese culture, and it (sort of) got me a friend, who shared the same love of Dragon Ball that I do.

For me, I guess I could consider Dragon Ball my "gateway drug" into anime. It was one of the first I ever watched, if not the first. From there my love for it has more or less grown over the years.

It done nothing remarkable, only to keep me interested about this anime series.
It never was any anime gateway for me, because at that time, they started to broadcast Pokémon, which I didn't like and then I discovered channel where I was watching Magic Knights Rayearth, Slayers, Dragon Ball and Saint Seiya at the same time running right after.

It has motivated me into watching new anime series that in the past I probably would not have given a chance. And after listening to the Japanese Dragon Ball theme songs over and over and over and over again (especially DAN DAN), I have started listening to Japanese music which I would never have done before watching Dragon Ball.

Dragon Ball has got me interested in martial arts, rekindled my interest in animation, given me a new respect for traditional animation, given me inspiration to get into video editing, got me into watching classic Kung Fu movies, and I've met quite a few people that I wouldn't have otherwise.

Also, the anime totally swept me away when I wasn't doing well in the emotional/psychological health department.

This is an interesting topic! I like it.

DragonBall has given me something to love and follow over the years, as well as collect. I started collecting DB toys eleven years ago and still haven't stopped! It also got me into reading manga, which in turn made me curious to learn Japanese, which in turn.. I learned and took for 6 years and now speak almost fluenty! And then dated a native Japanese guy for three years, then broke up with him, and then started my YouTube show reviewing DragonBall action figures and toys and from thaaat.. I have gotten tons of free figures in the mail from my fans who don't want them anymore or would like to give them a good home. I made a blog to document my collection and record DB news for my followers, and have become part of some huge communities. I also am able to sell figures, and customize figures for moolah! And finally, I've made a lot of friends and acquaintances from YouTube and also this forum (and DragonBall Toys forum), yay!

I'm probably forgetting something.. hm.

Oh. DragonBall has also made me wish we had capsules and hover crafts.. and dinosaurs. o.o

Hmmm, where to start.

The rock-like music of Falconer's score got me really interested in Rock bands (Rock is my favorite music Genre)

I love, love LOVE the Japanese music. Shunsuke Kikuchi's score is just awesome, and gives it such a flair that you can't get in the dub. Hironobu Kageyama's voice is unmistakable. I can immediately pick him out in any song he sings. I own both the Budokai 2/3 and Super Survivor CD singles, and plan on buying the rest in the future. It also led me to liking other Japanese music from Anime and Super Sentai.

I'm here, aren't I? Liking the Anime/Manga brought me to this community, the best damn Dragonball site on the 'net.

Oh, and the action of Dragonball Z got me to like Bleach more. Another series I'm addicted to. Thanks. :P
Next quest: Buy the Super: Broly and Super Hero Blurays, also Daima whenever that releases in the states. Also the Super Manga!

Fan of Dragon Ball Z and various other Anime since '98! ^^

It got me off the heroin and believed in me when I didn't believe in myself. But it couldn't get me off that damned island!!

Seriously, it came full circle in fulfillment of entertainment through the "fighting" genre. As someone who played fighting games growing up, I guess a TV show about fighting was the next logical step.

Also, I liked the episodic element of the show. In American shows we usually get stand alone episodes, with rare episodes that would reference a previous one. Added to that, a U.S. cartoon would normally run 65 episodes and then end (whether it was good or bad).

DBZ was among the few that was episodic and among the first of long running shows to be seen (eventually) into it's completion in the states.

Eleven beautiful years of art, writing and creativity with wonderful people. It's been a crazy ride but totally worth it.

Then there's all that fun stuff just about the show and the toys and the crazy convos and cool communities I've been a part of and shit. But it's the creative stuff it's stirred in me that's been the most fun.

Dragonball has been a huge part of my development of my artistic ability as well as my writing ability (and I have always been most prolific when doing Dragonball works). It brought me into a number of communities, and introduced me to people who have become great friends and helped me through rough patches.

I tried drifting away from DB a few years ago to get away from doing fan works -- now I'm back. I missed interacting with other fans (though it was just this year that I joined here!), and I missed feeling the motivation to sit down and draw or write something at least once a week. And I'd forgotten how much emotional attachment I'd formed for the characters. They're near and dear to my heart. So I guess I could say that DB gave me this...knowledge of something that I can be enthusiastic about drawing or writing even when nothing else interests me. When I think I don't have free time for anything, I make time for my DB fandom.

(Seriously, though -- the art -- 2004 -> 2006. And now that I've picked DB back up, I'm working on improving things once more. ^^)

It's done almost the same for me. And I've met a lot of other really cool people directly or indirectly because of Dragon Ball, too.

But it's also done a lot for my website. It gave me something to do with it besides make bad jokes or rant about personal problems. I get a lot of enjoyment from working on Dragon Ball-related things, and it also constantly inspires me to do more and to do better. And not only does it help me practice my web design skills, but also my writing, analytical, and organizational skills, some of which are things I have interest in on a professional level. So maybe one day it could also help me get a decent job.
