Gohan and Bulma's "new" voices???

Post by Questrider » Mon May 24, 2010 2:12 pm

What do guys think of Kid Gohan's new voice?
Bulma's?

To me it just sounds weird...but then I'm still trying to get used to the change.
Were the original ladies unavailable?

I think the new Bulma, Monica Rial, is pretty darn good. I'm not quite sure what to think of using Colleen Clinkenbeard, though. I'd have preferred trying to create unity using Kara Edwards as the child voices of the Sons.

That, or toss in Kate Oxley!! :)

Do you know what happened to Stephanie N?
I LOVED her voice for Gohan.

Stephanie wanted to do the voice for Gohan but Funimation intentionally changed it, which was a very good decision because Stephanie Nadolny makes Gohan sound old and too raspy. The new voice for Gohan by Colleen Clickenbeard is much better than Stephanie Nadolny's Gohan.

As for the other new voices, from what I heard, all of them are better than their old Funimation voices. The new Bulma is much more fitting and I really like the new narrator, he reminds me of Doc Harris.

^I guess to me it all sounds very strange because I watched all 291 episodes with the original Bulma AND Gohan. It probably just take some getting used to??? Frankly, the new voices just might ruin it for me. :|

(being an actor myself, I'm a stickler for having the same cast in place)

To me, the original cast will always be the best simply because this is how it was introduced to me.

I don't like Gohan at all, but Monica Rial is virtually the same a s Tiffany Vollmer, so no problems with her.

Basically what RazorX said. She would have returned, but the crew chose not to call her back.

In what way is the Funimation cast for DBZ the "original cast"? They're not even the original English cast.

And Colleen Clinkenbeard and Monica Rial are the best English voices those roles have ever had.

I think the new voice actor for Gohan is a perfect fit, he just sounds more realistic to me. I hear him speak while watching the Dragon Box and his old dub voice seems out of place now.

While new Gohan will take some getting used to for me as well, I absolutely agree that both voices are better than the originals. Also, it seems to me that the new Bulma is MUCH better at not screaming and screeching her lines. The specific scene I'm thinking of is in Z Kai when Bulma, Krillin, and Roshi are talking about Goku's death. It was a terrifically acted scene, IMO.

Well, when Funimation came in with their new voices in the Ginyu saga, it was quite a shock for most DBZ fans. Compare Funimation's first season 3 dub with Ocean's seasons 1 and 2 dub. If you're an actor, you should be able to see the massive casting and acting quality advantage Ocean has over Funimation.
To me, the original cast will always be the best simply because this is how it was introduced to me.
The original English cast for Dragon Ball Z is the Ocean Group's cast in Vancouver, Canada. They were always the best cast for me and Funimation's cast seem out of place. Notice how Funi's cast replacements are receiving positive reactions for their dub of Kai, Funi's cast can be improved easily from the old voices they stuck with, which dont seem to fit. If you're really interested in watching Kai with the original English cast, look out for The Ocean Group's dub of Dragon Ball Kai.

Hopefully there will be more cast replacements in Funimation's dub. It'll make the show more interesting to watch that way.

No they're not. Although they're fairly decent, Lalainia Lindbjerg and Saffron Henderson are much superior for Bulma and Gohan respectively.

As far as the best voices for Bulma and Kid Gohan go, I'd say its Maggie Blue O Hara and Saffron Henderson respectively.

After watching the Nicktoons broadcast, my opinion still stands. I still don't like Clinkenbeard, while I'm neutral towards Rial because if I didn't have any prior knowledge, I would've thought it was still Vollmer.

Gohan was a much needed replacement. I don't have a problem with Stephanie Nadolny's Goku, or her Android era Gohan, but the problem with her early Gohan is that he simply didn't sound anywhere close to a four-year-old.

Bulma, I never had a problem with. I guess this one is maybe slightly more natural sounding though.

I'm sorry but I despise Gohan's new VA. It works pre Piccolo Training. But sounds sooooooo bad post training. They showed a preview of Gohan firing a Masenko, sounded freaking terrible

I'm sorry, but are you basing that opinion on having seen the actual episodes featuring Gohan after the training, or are you basing your ENTIRE opinion on that ONE line reading of "MASENKO HA!"?

Because if you are... that's not fair at all.

I am so glad that Bulma is less obnoxious. Serious improvement in that regard.

Although Gohan actually sounds like a kid now, I think I'll need to get used to the voice before I pass judgement on it. I think I'll miss Nadolny's interpretation of the character, even though it was a bit gruff and ill-fitting.

It seems like more than enough to me. Ignoring the fact that he's like 5 and a half at this time, it sounds too much like a Woman his VA does, which I know it is. But Gohan is male, which means he should at least sound like one. I'll deal with it but I'll cringe whenever he screams. Hopefully it sounds better during the Frieza Arc

The new Bulma is pretty good. But I don't like this new Gohan very much.

His voice comes out like a crossover between toddler Pan and Chiaotzu.

Agreed. It's weird how people are saying that Rial's Bulma is so much better than Vollmer's, when they're really similar.

They're a similar voice (well, vocal range?), sure. The difference is that one can act, and can do so in something other than a scream.

As you'll ultimately read in my review when it's done, Rial brings a maturity and kindness (not to mention intelligence) to the character that English fans haven't been treated to since 1998. That's a good thing.
