Dragonbox VS Orange Brick Sets....a few questions
Re: Dragonbox VS Orange Brick Sets....a few questions
I think it's good if the dubs improve on certain things, especially if it's something that the anime does differently from the manga that's easy to get around. Like Trunks' death and Vegeta's reaction.

"Improving" things through script revisions is not a dub's job.jjgp1112 wrote:I think it's good if the dubs improve on certain things...

Re: Dragonbox VS Orange Brick Sets....a few questions
I think the medium matters a lot. For instance, you probably wouldn't be upset with Capcom USA for fixing a glitch when localizing a Japanese game or adding an optional boss fight when there wasn't one originally. With script revisions it is not so black and white.Gaffer Tape wrote:Interesting, because, in terms of works of fiction, I am generally the opposite. I prefer accuracy over quality. Sure, I'd prefer quite a bit of quality to get into the work, but, if there's a slip-up, I'd rather it be preserved than "fixed." If someone wants to improve something or make a new spin on things in a separate remake or something, that's fine. That's why I'm all for fixing animation goofs in Kai, and I was totally okay with anime Trunks not mentioned #s 19 and 20. But if they fixed those animation goofs in Z or changed the manga line so that #s 19 and 20 weren't mentioned, then I'd be pissed. But I believe that a dub should be a straight adaptation, so, for the most part, it should stay as accurate as possible, within reason.
I'm not necessarily saying that FUNimation should pull a Robotech and pretty much write an entirely new show, even if I do like Robotech. But I see it like a localization is necessarily an adaptation. Look around at these boards. Most people here already write off dubs as non-issues specifically because regardless of the accuracy, it's still an adaptation they want nothing to do with. So regardless of how accurate or inaccurate it is, a certain constituency will always disregard it. Let's say you have a 100% accurate dub. To somebody who cares about that accuracy, they'll probably just choose to watch the subbed version regardless of what the dub is like. So I figure adaptations and creative license isn't necessarily a terrible thing in a dub when handled appropriately. You're not going to win many fans over anyway by being anal about the script.

The DBZ dub is already essentially Robotech.

Re: Dragonbox VS Orange Brick Sets....a few questions
*waits for shitstorm* I can't believe anyone could ever go that far. Robotech is a complete entity of its own, merging shows together. FUNimation never did that with any DragonBall, unless you technically count sticking episode 2 into movie 1.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Re: Dragonbox VS Orange Brick Sets....a few questions
The DBZ dub altered things to a substantially smaller degree than Robotech. I think if you say otherwise, you're either bsing or just plain wrong.penguintruth wrote:The DBZ dub is already essentially Robotech.

Re: Dragonbox VS Orange Brick Sets....a few questions
Yeah, Robotech is the amalgamation of three different shows.
1. Super Dimension Fortress Macross
2. Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross
3. Genesis Climber MOSPEADA
You can't compare the two. Now maybe you could argue early DBZ was similar to Battle of the Planets but even then they never animated their own sequences to insert into the story.

Re: Dragonbox VS Orange Brick Sets....a few questions
My point is, the DBZ dub is DBZ in the same way Robotech's Macross saga is SDF Macross. It's made of that material, but the dub paints it outrageously differently at times. And if you can't see that, you need to turn the subtitles on when you watch the dub and see what I mean.

Re: Dragonbox VS Orange Brick Sets....a few questions
The story in DBZ is pretty much the same in the dub. That's a far cry from Robotech. Use any 80s anime localization except Robotech. Voltron would even be a better example and even that is pushing it.

The story in the Macross Saga of Robotech is essentially the same as SDF Macross, too. And also much different.TonyTheTiger wrote:The story in DBZ is essentially the same, though. That's a far cry from Robotech.

Then I don't know what to say because we've either watched two different Robotechs or two different FUNi DBZs. Robotech is as much Macross as Power Rangers is Zyuranger.

Re: Dragonbox VS Orange Brick Sets....a few questions
Well, I'm exaggerating a little, but watching DBZ in Japanese and in English can be very different experiences. It's different than watching the English dub of most other anime.

Re: Dragonbox VS Orange Brick Sets....a few questions
I'd agree with that to some extent. Vegeta's attitude at certain moments is what stands out as the most glaring. Same for Goku at times. But in the big picture? It's still DBZ.
Re: Dragonbox VS Orange Brick Sets....a few questions
Um, that's precisely why I continue to argue in these threads. I haven't watched the dub without JP subs in about 4 years and I just get baffled when people say it's wildly different because I don't see it each and every time I watch the damn thing.penguintruth wrote:My point is, the DBZ dub is DBZ in the same way Robotech's Macross saga is SDF Macross. Re: Dragonbox VS Orange Brick Sets....a few questions
It doesn't matter if you personally like it. That doesn't change the fact that a dub isn't supposed to do what the Z dub did. It's not a mere dubbing company's place to "improve" or otherwise alter the story to what they think it should be like.jjgp1112 wrote:Well, um...I don't care. Shit like that is the hallmark of a bad dub job.
