I don't get it either. Both 天下一武道会 and Tenkaichi Budoukai are gibberish to the average American kid, unless they're already familiar with the series or happen to speak Japanese. Is it a sign that they plan to use the Japanese name when they get to the 25th...? Or did they already use "World Martial Arts Tournament" in the Kai dub's dialogue?Innagadadavida wrote:This is really interesting because in FUNimation's dub, they call the Tenkaichi Budokai "The World Martial Arts Tournament." Therefore, the Romanji means nothing. It was a totally pointless edit. They left other Japanese characters intact, what was the reason for this edit?

Well...I'm not sure "World Martial Arts Tournament" would fit on there....
Oh, yes. Geez...I swear that at least 80% of the commercials I saw last night were for Kai. There were even commercials for Kai during Kai!Innagadadavida wrote: Also, Nicktoons is advertising the balls out of Z Kai. They're really proud of having it on their channel.

You clearly had a viewpoint to share and expand upon, so why compromise and negate its impact by personally attacking someone for its setup? It just looks childish -- not that I'm expecting each and every single last post from anyone ever to emit an air of total professionalism, but sheesh.
I feel I made my point, and what I got was "NUH UH, THE VERSION YOU LIKE BETTER SUCKS".
I don't feel like that warrants any kind of professional response aside from "Go away".
But of course, if I respond to that in the least bit unprofessionally, it is I who gets scolded by the mod.
My viewpoint on the new version by Vic is that it sounds like a Bon Jovi remix. I wish I could have heard the version he responded to a fan about where he said he tried to be accurate to the Japanese version. Apparently they wanted him to sing it in this way, though, which is kinda crappy. I thought FUNimation was over that.
I bet if I heard the way he originally had done it, it would be my preferred version. But as I've said, I don't really like either, so it's not like I'm here to completely defend Schemmel's version on the uncut release.

So anyone interested in creating a Dragon ball Z Kai Uncensored website?

On the other hand, I don't particularly like Vic Mignogna as a VA (or, at least as Edward Elric), but I love his singing voice.

It's just if I were to pick which version I'd like to have on the show, it'd be the one most accurate to the original.
I mean hell, that's what this whole Kai dub's about.

Re: Dragon Ball Z Kai Episodes 1-8 NickToons Talkback
Well, at least the popularity of the SPARKING video game series in America has given a lot more people some vague, mangled understanding of those terms in comparison to the TV dubs themselves, so maybe it's not that out of place. It does raise those same questions to me. Well, first of all, it's weird they'd spell it Budoukai when the English precedent for the aforementioned video games dropped the second "u." Second, it's strange that the TV dub, which is apparently supposed to be dropping much of the Japaneseyness and going with Special Beam Cannon et al would add in a Tenkaichi Budoukai. Third, this slightly deflates the rationale that the Kai dub is supposed to be following along with the continuity established in the DB dub, as they consistently used World Martial Arts Tournament. So, uh... yeah, FUNimation... why Tri-Beam?TripleRach wrote:I don't get it either. No, Kai Dub Goku says, "I haven't seen [Piccolo] since our fight at the World Martial Arts Tournament," in the recap on episode 2. So they're still going with World Martial Arts Tournament. At least with the spoken dialog.
Which makes the edit even more baffling.

Wow, I never thought I'd see the day... and it's already here so fast.
Wait, so why is it on NickToons and not Cartoon Network?
I wonder how many people are watching it and if it's going to do well... a whole new group of people are being introduced to Dragonball.

CW is basic cable. It's also a regular non-cable channel in some states. That'll be a better outlet than Nicktoons. Still. Having it on an extended cable channel with advertising out the wazoo won't hurt.
Actually, CW is similar to FujiTV. And we'll get Z Kai once a week with Toonzai. We're getting an experience very similar to Japan. That's really cool.

Well, i've done the usual 'video plus subtitles encode' of the Vic version. Heck, I re-did the sequence from my RAW since the C_P encode didn't look that good video wise. If anyone wants to start a 'Dragon Ball Z Kai Uncensored' website or whatever, I could tell you what exactly was cut, shortened and lengthed about their version (Yes, one scene was lengthened) since I spent like 30 minutes carefully editing it together XD
So anyway, here's the mp3: http://www.alabastakingdom.com/EveryOne ... SoulTV.mp3 and updated lyrics:
Mysteries abound!
Made of a deep energy!
Foes all around!
But I will go, fearless and free!
Ill give you strength!
You give me love!
That's how well live!
My courage wont fade!
If youre with me,
my enemies will never win!
We will fight for love and glory
We will live to tell the story
There is nothing we cant live through
Nothing ever dies; we will rise again!
Dont stop, Dont stop, were in luck now
Dont stop, theres so much to be found
We can find paradise
All we have to do is go, go! Free your soul
Dragon Soul!

Wow, okay. I just heard Schemmel's version of Dragon Soul. All I gotta say is, it hurt my ears. I like Vic's way better. Vic sounds more into it with more emotion and power into the song and uses his actual talent! We better get his version in future DVDs. Also, is there anyway anyone could make a longer version of it?
"You must have faith in who you are." - Gohan (Dragonball Evolution)
Re: Dragon Ball Z Kai Episodes 1-8 NickToons Talkback
Interesting. Vic's slightly reworded version uses the word "energy" appropriately where it was used in the Japanese version.
Re: Dragon Ball Z Kai Episodes 1-8 NickToons Talkback
I'm interested as to why they used the "ou" romanization while the typical spelling used when the term is acknowledged has been Budokai, as seen by the game series.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Detailed differences between the TV broadcast and the DVD/Blu-ray of Episode 1:
- Opening was sped up, with the song shortened and resung by Vic Mignogna. The initial white kanji was removed from the TV airing.
- Episode 1's opening on the home releases has the original japanese DBK logo, while the TV airing (and all future episodes on both cases) has the DBZK logo.
- The dark sky scenes with lightning were cut from the opening.
- The opening is textless in the TV airing, whereas it has translated English versions of the original Japanese credits on the home releases.
- TV opening fades out, home releases just cut to the episode.
- Bardock's blood and scar were painted out in the TV airing.
- The Tenkaichi Budôkai's sign was suprisingly transliterated in the TV airing, from kanji to "Tenkaichi Budoukai".
- Title card has a different font in the TV airing
- Farmer with Shotgun's cigarette was painted out in the TV airing.
- Eyecatchers were removed from the TV airing.
- Dialogue change, Piccolo: "Unless you're in a hurry to die, keep moving" -> "Unless you're looking for trouble, keep moving"
- Dialogue change 2, Piccolo: "Why you, I should kill you where you stand! Do you have any idea who you're talking to?" -> "Why you, do you have any idea who I am? No one talks to me like that and gets away with it!".
- Paint edit, Roshi's beer was changed to... white.
- Frames where Muten Rôshi's drinking his beer were replaced with frames from later where he's just talking.
- The frames from talking that were put earlier NOW have Muten Rôshi drinking his beer, but with the part where Bulma pushes the present and spills it out removed. Probably to avoid having to paint-edit the splashes.
- Cut: Muten Rôshi trying to grope Bulma, Bulma hitting him with her present and calling him a pervert. BGM would normally start here, but they instead had it start slightly before to prevent having an awkward cut in the BGM.
- Dialogue in the scene differs quite a bit, and is as follows:
TV version:
- Kuririn's blood was painted white in the TV airing.
- The ending, Yeah! Break! Care! Break!, was removed entirely.
- The next episode preview's title uses the same different font as the title card.

Bulma: I miss this place. Hasn't changed a bit...
Rôshi: Well, don't be such a stranger. You don't always have to wait for an invitation, you know. *BGM starts mid-way*
Krillin: Hey, so uh, what's ol' Yamcha been up to these days, Bulma?
Bulma: Ugh, that idiot! I don't even wanna think about him! He made me so mad I didn't even tell him we were gonna be here today! I never wanna see him again; I'm done with him for good! I mean, can you believe it? He took another girl on a date!
Rôshi: Guess nothing changed with those two, either.
Krillin: Nope, guess not.

Rôshi: Ah, that's sweet, but you didn't have to go through all that trouble. I mean, you could just gimme a sample of those other goodies...
*BONK*
Rôshi: I see you still can't take a joke!
Bulma: And I see you're still a dirty old creep! *BGM starts mid-line*
Krillin: Oh yeah, that reminds me! Where's Yamcha? Thought he'd be with you!
Bulma: Ugh, Yamcha, that jerk! How should I know?! He could be out chasing every girl in the city for all I care, I'm done with him! I didn't even tell him we were getting together today! But who needs that guy, right? We can still have fun without him!

I wonder why they changed Bulma's line about Yamcha's philandering. I guess taking one other girl on a date is less morally rephrensible than "chasing every girl in the city". Like kids are going to even pay attention to Bulma's love life woes. The show isn't Sex and the City.
