Well they still bleed. They're just not coughing up gallons of blood anymore. Kind of like how Cartoon Network censored DBZ in the Toonami days. One scene in particular was Videl vs Spopovich and she's coughing out a bunch of blood. That was cut from the broadcast, but left on the DVD. So it's like that. They still bleed, just not excessively. Those types of scenes only happened a couple of times anyway, the Makankosappou through Raditz and Goku, that Videl example I gave, and I'm tempted to say Vegeta vs Freeza, but can't say 100%.

And again, this is how Kai was made, without the "footage" and "blood." If you feel you're cheated out of that, then there's plenty more that's cut out such as approximately 191 episodes.

I only don't get something. If on the DVD/Blu-ray Piccolo says "Makankosappou," but on the TV airing he says "Special Beam Cannon" (aside from the flashback I guess), why didn't they do that with everything? Like the Tri-Beam, and Tien, etc., where they'd have the proper names for the home release and the dub names for Nick Toons?

From Arlong Park forums, regarding Fuji TV putting One Piece back in it's old Sunday night slot.

If DB Kai is broadcast in night just like DBZ it's rating will be number 1

Oh wow, Kai's version of that episode is just awful..

I mean, there's a scene where Vegeta coughs up blood while being choked by Freeza, and the blood lands on Freeza's face, and Freeza licks it off.

That scene was KEPT in Kai, and yet, for some reason, there's a scene following after where the EXACT same footage was used of Vegeta coughing blood, and it was cut to show Vegeta just coughing. Why?? I think it's a lot worse to see Freeza licking the blood than Vegeta just coughing it.

Not to mention they changed a lot of the blood to white, so Vegeta looked like he was gagging on his spit...

And I completely laughed out loud when Freeza sends the finger beam through his chest, and he is supposed to cough blood at the screen. He just opens his mouth and closes it lol

Yeah I really dislike the censors, so much to the point where I actually splice Dragon Box footage with Kai footage where there are censors. Sure, it's a bit inconsistent, and it's a pain, but at least it doesn't look unbelievably stupid

Which is funny because on the island before they take off to hunt down Radditz, he states "His power level is way higher than ours!"

That might have been to fit the mouth movements, or a slip-up. He never uses the term in that way again for the rest of the set.

Wait, on Nicktoons in the flashback, Piccolo still says Special Beam Cannon. Doesn't he not?
No, he definitely said Makkankosappo during the flashback. I remember my head snapping up from my half-paying-attention as soon as I heard it. I'm only seeing the dub on Nicktoons, so I don't know about any other versions, but I can't imagine Nicktoons said 'hey, how about you redub him to say the Japanese attack name here instead'...that had to be a FUNi decision. I doubt very much that Nicktoons even has very much familiarity with the series, unless there's a diehard fan on staff who was like NO, YOU HAVE TO MAKE HIM SAY IT IN JAPANESE HERE. The inconsistency just drives me crazy - either use the original or use the dub name, but don't flip-flop between 'em willy-nilly.

Thing is, the uncut version had "Makankosappo" in every situation, which was changed for the TV airing, so it's likely that FUNimation just forgot to replace it during that flashback.

... on a random note, when catching Kaio's debut episode, I was pleased to see the rewritten puns were still as lame as you'd expect them to be. "It's just like what what cartons of orange juice tell you to do... concentrate!"

They changed the jokes? Why would they do that? I don't remember any jokes in the uncut that were inappropriate... :?

They changed the jokes to make them more 'punny', like Kaio's original jokes were.

I watched it on the Nicktoons site, and I didn't notice any of the jokes being different. The "Orange Juice" joke was said during the episode preview, but I don't remember that from the set. I'll have to watch again. But, as far as the episode goes, the jokes were the same.

I think by "rewritten puns", they meant new ones instead of the ones from the Z dub.

Not that they changed the puns from the DVD, because none of them were inappropriate.

Umm, hi guys, and I know that this is fairly unrelated to the general conversation, but I just thought I'd drop in and give my unsolicited opinion on the new dub.

To be honest, I don't like this version as much as the original JP, but I honestly don't hate it. I think that it will help foster a new generation of DB/Z dub fans that will actually understand that there is a bit more to the series than their childhood nostalgia and dudes punching each other in the face for half an hour. Both of those are part of it of course, but it seems like most of the fans of the older dub completely ignored the adventurous spirit, traditional shonen fighting series values, and great sense of humor, as they would rather talk about "how much of a badass Frieza is".

In other words, more like the Naruto and Yu Yu Hakusho dubbies and less like the Digimon and Voltron/Golion dubbies.
Stuff I Know About: Hellsing, Detective Conan, Macross, GaoGaiGar, Cowboy Bebop, Black Lagoon, Kaiji, Hetalia, Fullmetal Alchemist, Captain Harlock, Digimon, Berserk, Dragon Ball, One Piece, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Yu Yu Hakusho, Cyborg 009, Lupin III, Ultimate Muscle/Kinnikuman, Discworld, Avatar: The Last Airbender, TMNT, Futurama, Invader Zim, South Park, Sandman, Marvel, DC, Scott Pilgrim, Star Wars, Godzilla, Doctor Who, Super Sentai, Kamen Rider, Kingdom Hearts, and Sonic the Hedgehog

On the topic of Kaio's puns, I was talking about them being "rewritten" in that if they went with the Japanese script directly, it wouldn't really make much sense since the puns would only work in Japanese.

Also, IncompetentOverlord, are you saying the Kai dub's more YYH style, or Digimon style? Honestly, the series is so ginormous, that I kinda fit in both categories.

... Have you not watched the Digimon dub? It's heavily edited at times, replaces all the Japanese music, has plot holes all over the place in early episodes and has jokes shoehorned all through the script.

This by no means makes the dub bad, it's perfectly enjoyable as it's own entity, but it's not really accurate to the Japanese version at all.

Yu Yu Hakusho on the other hand, had a relatively accurate dub from Funimation.

Depends on who you're asking. I personally can't stand the Digimon dub at all.
