Did Goku die earlier during the fight against Freeza

Post by yunzabit » Sun Jun 06, 2010 11:36 pm

Did Goku die during the fight against Freeza? No I'm not talking about when Namek exploded.

A friend of mine brought this up and after checking it out in the manga I really have no clue, so I figured I would ask you guys. I will edit this post later with the page numbers on the manga (Vol. 11) but basically what happens is Freeza knocks Super Saiyan Goku underwater and right after that the manga cuts to the wish being granted that everyone killed by Freeza can come back to life. Then Goku rises out of the water.

So is there any definitive answer or is it supposed to be vague?

STATUS: False.

EXPLANATION: This one is extremely easy to put to rest if you actually analyze the facts of the series. Unfortunately, if you are not paying close enough attention, the anime's addition of filler material into the surrounding incidents makes it a little more confusing than it should be.

In chapters 322 and 323, a newly-SSJ Goku is fighting against a final-form Freeza. Goku launches a Kamehameha against his foe, who proceeds to fly into it and eventually bust right through, knocking Goku down underground. At the very same time, back on Earth, Mr. Popo has summoned Shenlong and proceeds to wish all those killed by Freeza back to life. Freeza laughs to himself with pride, but looks around wondering what is going on with the sky. We see the murdered Namekians begin to stand up (having been wished back to life), and much to Freeza's surprise, a very exhausted-looking SSJ Goku rises up out of the ocean like a phoenix from its own ashes.

So wait... did Goku just get wished back to life...?!?

It is inherently impossible. Shenlong can only bring a person back to life once; he brought Goku back to life during the previous story arc on Earth (right before the battle with Nappa & Vegeta). Therefore, Goku was not dead. Just a little tired. He got better.

Additionally, someone who has been killed and brought back to life typically will not still be in SSJ the entire time. Furthermore, wounds are generally healed and the individual brought back to life does not look as if they are still in the middle of a giant life-or-death battle.

The anime (DBZ episode 100) does not help the situation, adding in additional filler material where Gohan drones on and on about how he can no longer feel his father's ki, and proceeds to fly back to battle with Freeza. Just as in the manga, Goku rises up out of the ocean after the wish is made, but the fact still remains that Shenlong could not have brought Goku back to life for a second time.
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

Thanks! I did a search on the forum but I forgot the rumor guide, and I read that not too long ago. I guess that's why I thought I was onto something.

I don't know about the manga as I've never read them but as far as the animé is concerned, yes Goku did die underwater during the fight.

The first response to this thread more or less proved that Goku didn't die on Namek, whether in Toei-land or canonically.

To add to this, let me consult my good buddy, Mr. Chris Psaros*, in his episode comparison for episode 100.
Chris Psaros wrote:3. "Freeza actually DID kill Goku in this episode, but the wish brought him back to life!"

No. You're a silly person, and that didn't happen. To be fair, I can see how this mistake would be made, especially since Gohan mentions that he can't sense Goku's ki anymore, and Goku is underwater for quite some time. But we can know for a fact that he wasn't brought back, simply because Sheng Long already did so during the Saiya-jin Saga.
*Any claim Gaffer Tape makes to being friends with a former DBZ webmaster may or may not be at all accurate.

So Shenlong can't bring the same person back to life even if the wish is different?
Let's say Freeza really did kill Goku. One wish was to "bring Goku back to life" during the Saiyajin saga and the other wish was "bring all those killed by Freeza back to life" which just so happened to include Goku, wouldn't that be a way the rule? If not then it should be.

It's not. If it was, Kuririn would have come back to life with that same wish, and he obviously didn't.

I think Shenlong and Porunga keep a list of who has died so the same people can't be brought back to life again no matter the difference of a wish.

In addition, GOku doesn't come back in the 'everybody killed by Cell' wish.

Nope, Goku would have been at full strength and wouldn't have been still all beat up.

I never understood, why that much of people always thought that Goku died in the battle with Freeza.
When we were watching the Freeza saga on TV with my schoolmates and other fans, nobody every pointed this thing out.
Only time we thought that Goku died was when Namek exploded. Really awesome climax, ruined by Porunga in next episode:D

I never used to think that until this person who I worked with told me that "Goku died during the Freeza fight" and I didn't believe him at first but after hearing his reasons, I believed him.

Super Saiyan Son Goku, actually getting killed or even put in any mortal danger by Freeza.

Ha. It is to laugh. Anyone suggesting Goku died is REALLY giving Freeza too much credit.

Well Freeza had that whole "I can blow up the planet and survive in outer space while you can't" gimmick.

Yeah, but that's not dependent on his ability (or lack thereof) to seriously hurt Goku under his own power. That's a last-ditch cop-out for Freeza. Like avoiding a fist fight you'd definitely lose by running the other guy over with a car.

The anime might have confused the issue, but I'd be surprised if someone came to the conclusion that he'd died from the manga alone. Freeza just rammed him and sent him into the water (and into an underwater mountain). That would be the lamest Dragon Ball death ever.

What? Why?

They were fighting almost equally for the entire battle, and Goku's edge only became clear near the end of the fight. Freeza got in a number of good hits on Goku, and he even overpowered (one way or another) a Kamehameha. Goku was clearly stronger there, but in no way is it laughable to think Freeza was capable of killing him. Since he wasn't far from being able to do so.

Same situation here. That's actually why this thread was started, although I didn't think he was right.

Also the answer was given in the second post so this thread can be locked now.
