Re: "DragonBall Z Kai" TV Broadcast Talkback
Is it me or is episode 11 on Nicktoons' website missing about 7 minutes worth of footage!!
Re: "DragonBall Z Kai" TV Broadcast Talkback
"I hate the media" was cringe-worthy, I hope that's different in the unedited version? "Slow-ku" was so stupid I couldn't help but laugh though.penguintruth wrote:I was pleasantly surprised by the use of "Kienzan" in the TV broadcast, too.
But I was also annoyed by the "I hate the media!" line and "Slow-ku".
Yeah, doesn't make sense to me either. I seriously was expecting destructo disc to pop out of his mouth. I'm pretty sure it was pronounced correctly.Gaffer Tape wrote:Okaaaay, so they left that in, but they felt compelled to change Makankosappo? Why does none of this make any sense? Oh, and did they say "Kienzan" or "Kienzen" again?SonEric84 wrote:Krillin just used the "kienzan" on nicktoons. I'm surprised (and impressed) that they left that in.
Trans rights, now!
Re: "DragonBall Z Kai" TV Broadcast Talkback
Kienzan was still mispronounced as "Kienzen".
Such an odd television dub...some of the line changes make sense, such as removing instances of swearing, and excessive use of "strong" death words. Other changes make sense only if done consistently. Changing Makkankosappo to Special Beam Cannon, to appease the viewers of the old dub, makes sense if that's their reasoning, but then they go and leave all the other changes alone. But then there's line changes where there was nothing that needed to be changed, but the line is different anyway.

This broadcast dub is reminding me of Funi's One Piece broadcast dub. Every now and again they're letting original terms slip and winking at the audience who know what's up. Unfortunately all this does is confuse everybody watching.

I was wondering this, too. They played the Opening twice. What in the world is going on?trunkschan90 wrote:Is it me or is episode 11 on Nicktoons' website missing about 7 minutes worth of footage!!
Oh well, it's free. Guess I can't complain too much, right?

Geez, for all the toning down they're supposedly trying to do, they're still letting plenty of pretty violent things slip into the TV version. Lines from Vegeta about "cleaning trash off the battle field" (referring to Yamcha's body) and wanting Gokuu to see the corpses of his friends when he arrives. You'd think these are the sorts of lines they'd change, but Vegeta is still just as much of a heartless dick as ever (just the way I love him

Of course there was the one time when FUNi showed the Sanji eyecatch on Cartoon Network completely unedited (i.e., cigarette intact), with the TV-Y7-FV ratings icon to boot. Don't know if FUNi will get away with something similar; the closest we've seen were the inconsistent edits with flashback scenes ("Makankosappo", Piccolo grabbing Gohan by the hair, Tenshinhan's "yellow" blood from his arm, etc.).....Blue wrote:This broadcast dub is reminding me of Funi's One Piece broadcast dub. I don't understand why Funimation is waiting until September to release the second DVD/Blu Ray, while they will be airing episodes past 13 on TV?
What's the point? Obviously that means that the episodes are done, why not release them earlier?
Probably a marketing strategy or something, they think the longer they take to release it the more Part one will sell.

Well for Nicktoons, it'll be airing up to 26. On par with the Blu-Rays

Re: "DragonBall Z Kai" TV Broadcast Talkback
They don't want to catch up to Japan too fast because if they did we'd end up getting like 1 set a year. There are only 60 episodes so far. Better 2 or 3 a year than 1.MetalMadness wrote:I don't understand why Funimation is waiting until September to release the second DVD/Blu Ray, while they will be airing episodes past 13 on TV?

Common theory is that Toei is afraid of reverse-importation. It makes sense, too. They don't want an American release catching up to them when it contains all the original Japanese episodes for a much lower price point.MetalMadness wrote:I don't understand why Funimation is waiting until September to release the second DVD/Blu Ray, while they will be airing episodes past 13 on TV?

Toei makes money regardless, besides the dragon boxs this would be the only FUNimation purchase that people would import.Cipher wrote:Common theory is that Toei is afraid of reverse-importation. It's already been imported to Japan, and has the same quality audio version that's on the Japanese releases.
Re: "DragonBall Z Kai" TV Broadcast Talkback
Toei's already sold the Dragon Box in Japan, and the singles have been around long enough to make most of their money. Toei's throwing all their weight behind Kai now; they have little to fear from fans reverse-importing the Funimation Dragon Boxes.Daimo-Rukiri wrote:Toei makes money regardless, besides the dragon boxs this would be the only FUNimation purchase that people would import.

Toei certainly makes less money from people buying Funimation's releases as opposed to their own, if they make any money at all. Toei owns the footage, but I'm not sure how much if any rights they hold on foreign video releases. When their own Blu-Ray sets of Kai cost upwards of $100, they have everything to fear from Funimation's sets getting to close to their schedule. The one advantage the Toei sets have is that they're farther along in the material.
If I were a Japanese fan who didn't mind waiting a little bit for releases, I would be buying the hell out of Funimation's version right now.

Re: "DragonBall Z Kai" TV Broadcast Talkback
This was intended from the beginning to be for the broadcast version, Chris described it as "everybody wins". We get the the meme for TV and the originally intended line for the DVD.
