This is marketing, do you all not get that? It doesnt affect the Bluray/DVD release so let 9000 reign supreme. The more attention kai brings, the better.
Well then I guess it falls in with all the other marketing Funi has done that failed to represent Kai properly. All this will cause is disappoint, confusion, and anger when people purchase the home releases expecting to hear their favourite meme and it's not there.

Exactly. I still don't get their business plan here. There's no consistency to it. Apparently the broadcast version is their cop out to old dub fans by keeping in old memes and attack names, but that still doesn't stop them from pronoucing Kaio-ken correctly. The home video version is supposed to be accurate, but they still cop out by not fixing everything. Then you'll have people who watched the broadcast version and then buy the home release only to be confused as to why so many things are written and pronounced differently. FUNimation seems to be taking the "jack of all trades, master of none" route, and it's really head-scratching as to the logic.

I remember when that meme used to be entertaining...before it became the internet equivalent of "WHATCHU TALKIN' BOUT' WILLIS!?".

I think he feels that way because the meme comes from FUNimation's dub.

Or maybe he doesn't like memes in general, god knows I don't. I wouldn't jump to any conclusions.

Because the fact that a company is purposefully half-assing both the home video and broadcast dubs which is creating further confusion is something that would only apply to a dub by FUNimation...?

What? I was talking about how the "Over 9000" meme came from FUNimation's/Ocean's dub of DBZ.

Yeah, this is basically it. I have a general distaste for memes, or at least for their overuse.

We get it, already. It's funny how Brian Drummond over-delivered the line. Or rather, it was funny YEARS AGO. The meme should have died a long time ago.

Meme's on their own aren't the worst thing in the world, but when they are spoken in casual, real world speak, along with many internet abbreviations like LOL and ROFL, then it chips away at my hope for humanity.

The over 9000 thing gave me a good laugh tonight. I've never minded the meme but that's not why I was in tears cracking up at it. It's the fact that they finally after all these years got the delivery of the line right. You know? It's like they were like "Ohhhhh THIS is why they find it funny" You guys know what I mean? I dunno maybe I'm just silly but I was absolutely surprised and tickled by this line tonight. I mean I knew they would use 9000 but to use it in that tone? Holy shit...and I can't believe how uptight some of y'all are being about this. Let the babies have their bottles already jeez. Lighten up.

I've never been a fan of this meme but as soon as I heard Chris Sabat screaming it in the trademarked 'over the top delivery' I couldn't help but smile. The fans finally got their ultimate delivery of the line and Sabat has surpassed Brian (In my opinion) in the line you would least expect him to.

Yeah, I figured it would just be, "Over 9000, argh" like in the Ultimate Uncut dub, i wasn't expecting him to go all out "OVER NINE THOUSAAAAAAAAAAAAAAND!"

Haha, I didn't expect that either. I actually laughed when I heard Chris do it like Brian. I thought for sure I was going to hate it because the meme is so overdone, but Chris did it well. The delivery was just like the old line of it and that's what made it funny.

My cousin is young and he doesn't know about the internet meme but yesterday night when we caught the show at 11pm he saw Vegeta yell "it's over 9000" he started laughing. Maybe it was because I was laughing too. He came home from school today screaming "What's my power level?" And I screamed back at him "IT'S OVER 9000!"

Seeing that meme is way funnier with family.

On the meme:

The meme is funny (at first) because the delivery of the line is hilarious. Although, I don't think it's half as ridiculous sounding as "Won't escape my WRAAAAATH!" but it's still pretty damn funny. There are plenty of other stupid sounding deliveries throughout the dub, but that one happened to catch on and is no less funny sounding for it.

What's not funny is its over-use and use out of context. It's not funny to just say or type "It's over 9000" in conversation. It's funny if and only if it is delivered in the same, over-the-top way that made it funny in the first place.

So yeah, while I'm sick of hearing about it, the line still sounds really funny. And honestly, I don't see a problem with Funimation adding a little humorous shout-out in the broadcast version. It's kind of like the intentionally poor dubbing during the localization of Godzilla 2000.

This is pretty much my stance on it. I only ever use "over 9000" if I'm, say, feigning extreme anger over something for humorous purposes. And then, even if it annoys someone that it's in here, I don't get that. The line is barely a second long, and making a big deal out of it is almost as stupid as the nerd rage over Ox King's smelling salts comment.

Well...Kaio-ken still has the same name as it did in the old dub...it's just pronounced right. It's not something as drastic as a name change like "Kienzan" to "Destructo Disc"(Although they didn't use that old term...so you do still have a point).

As far as the 9000 thing goes, I don't see any problem with it. FUNimation knows that it's wildly popular, and that tons of people enjoy it. They put it in the broadcast as a nod to those people. I saw a post from a fanpage on Facebook a couple weeks ago, and it was noting how "over 9000" was changed in Kai to the original "8000" line. I promise, 90% of the many, many, fan comments were people who were pissed about the change.

Quite frankly, I don't care. If it's over 9000...then it's over 8000, as well.

The 9,000 thing has never bothered me. In fact, if you look back, I put my bet in that they'd use it exclusively. I just don't get why they're making these two separate versions. I'd get it if it was just a censored version and an uncensored version with edits and dialogue changes made for content. But instead we have this bizarre, pick and choose continuity where some things are fixed in one version but not in another, some things are dub, some things are original, some things aren't fixed in either version, some things are fixed in both versions. There's just no logic to it, and I just keep on wondering what these people are smoking in the first place.

So when I get annoyed at the line, it's not because I think it's such a terrible error. I just don't get why they'd bother to make two different versions of that line. I mean, who the hell cares?
