I wouldn't say they're exactly the same. Goku killed a pterodactyl to save Bulma from becoming a dino dinner. Trunks caused a tsunami to get a dragon ball so he could wish for candy land and Busch Gardens or some thing like that. How selfish, which is exactly how he should be. 8)
