Except that Yajirove is only a couple years older than Gokuh. It's odd for him to talk to him like Gokuh's much younger than him. It's actually odd either way.

Are you aware of slang in America? People will refer to each other as son even if they're the same age.linkdude20002001 wrote:Except that Yajirove is only a couple years older than Gokuh. It's odd for him to talk to him like Gokuh's much younger than him. It's actually odd either way.

I've never heard it used between people of the same age. And if I heard someone say "YO, DAT JACKET IS TIGHT, SON, NAW MEEN?!", I think my brain would bleed.

So, more retarded slang for the moron generation. Great. Good to know Funimation is progressing so much.

Lololol it's a line from the movie.linkdude20002001 wrote:I've never heard it used between people of the same age. And if I heard someone say "YO, DAT JACKET IS TIGHT, SON, NAW MEEN?!", I think my brain would bleed.
But like I said, it's probably only in the edited version.

Hopefully. Unless they actually call him Son (pronounced correctly of course, 'cause otherwise there'd be no difference lol).

I'm confused as to how there are different pronunciations of "Son"...or, more-so, how the Japanese are pronouncing it any differently than we do here in America...

"Son" in Son Goku is pronounced like the word "sewn" rather than "son".Big Momma wrote:I'm confused as to how there are different pronunciations of "Son"...or, more-so, how the Japanese are pronouncing it any differently than we do here in America...

That's silly.
As far as I'm concerned, I hear them say "Son" the exact same way an English speaker would say it. If there are any differences, then it'd be because of the Japanese accent.

It's not their "accent" though, it's their word and how they pronounce it. It's how it SHOULD be pronounced and how they do pronounce it.Big Momma wrote:ohaimynameiserik wrote:"Son" in Son Goku is pronounced like the word "sewn" rather than "son".Big Momma wrote:I'm confused as to how there are different pronunciations of "Son"...or, more-so, how the Japanese are pronouncing it any differently than we do here in America...

Personally, I'd be quite happy even if it were pronounced wrong. At least they're acknowledging that it's his name. Just like how I don't mind their pronounciation of "saiyan".

Re: "DragonBall Z Kai" TV Broadcast Talkback
They've already ruined the Kamehame-Ha, Kaio-ken, and Saiyan. I'd rather they not continue this trend of teaching fans incorrect pronunciation.
But it is pronounced differently. Listen to people say Son in the Japanese version, and it should sound like the word so with an n sound after it. Also, Japanese doesn't even have an uh sound in it, so the closest they could get to the English word son is san. The Japanese vowels are like that of Spanish vowels, so A (ah), I (ee), U (oo), E (eh), and O (oh). They always make the same sound regardless.Big Momma wrote:Still, I don't hear anything different than the way I've heard it pronounced/pronounced it myself in America.

OMG. I hated how they always use to say KAYO-ken. It's so annoying. It's obviously KAI-o-ken because the "ai" makes a "eye" sound. Same goes for "Saiyan." Though, I'm fine with Funimation's pronunciation of it, it's still suppose to be SIGH-an. Kemeyameha always bugged the crap out of me, too.ohaimynameiserik wrote:Personally, I'd be quite happy even if it were pronounced wrong. At least they're acknowledging that it's his name. I know all that, and I am talking about the Japanese version. I just personally don't hear any difference. I guess I just don't care that much about it. The only difference is the difference between an "oh" and an "uh", I personally don't really see a big difference between either of those. Quite frankly, the fact that they used "Son" in the first place would be more exciting and outweigh any negativity of them pronouncing it wrongly.linkdude20002001 wrote:But it is pronounced differently. PLEASE don't start with the "It's either prounced this way or else it's wrong" nonsense. I'd think most of the people who are on this forum are beyond getting their panties in a knot over pronouncing one single name.KaiserNeko wrote:It's not their "accent" though, it's their word and how they pronounce it. Lord knows that it grates my ears when they mispronounce "Yajirobe" but in the long run, does it really matter?
I'm going to miss the "updates" for the TV edits for a while since these episodes are going beyond the first 13.... they're fun to read, at least when people aren't arguing over how to pronounce stuff "correctly".

Re: "DragonBall Z Kai" TV Broadcast Talkback
The way they edit this show makes no sense....so you can show the battered corpses of the Z warriors, but can't show Vegeta's tail being cut off? I just watched episode 15, and they showed Vegeta's reaction, then skipped to the tail falling to the ground and Yajirobe running off. I mean, seriously, they're robbing Yajirobe of the one cool-looking shot he has in the entire series where he's flying through the air with his sword. Not even the old dub cut that out!
And the violence edits don't seem very consistent, either. OK, so it seems they're cutting out all punches/kicks to the face, and other particularly painful looking hits. But when Vegeta fights Gohan, they left in the part where he clasps his fists together and brings them down (HARD) on Gohan's head. You'd think they'd edit something like that for sure (unless they did a super quick edit, but it certainly looked like the whole shot was complete). And they cut out Gokuu's big, open-mouthed (like, jaw unhinged) scream while Vegeta is crushing him, even though they showed it in the next episode preview (and which was also unedited in the old dub). I don't understand how they decide what should and shouldn't be edited, and I guess they don't understand either since they can't be consistent.

In Japanese yes, but not entirely in English. Words like "aid" and "aim" are proof of this.dragondyle wrote: OMG. I hated how they always use to say KAYO-ken. It's so annoying. It's obviously KAI-o-ken because the "ai" makes a "eye" sound.

Though oddly enough, I'll pronounce it "Sayin'" in English but then go "SIGH-a gin" for the Japanese....
