Do the TV Edits Bother You?
I guess this is a quick poll more than anything. Do the TV edits bother you guys? They don't bother me at all because we have an uncut version (a term that holds true for both the visuals and the dialogue). The same goes with any anime. I actually think a company can edit an anime to within an inch of its life if (AND ONLY IF) an uncut version is produced. It's only when the TV-edited version is the only version that I have a huge problem.
What about you guys?
What about you guys?

Re: Do the TV Edits Bother You?
The only thing that really bothers me is the inconsistency of the edits. Otherwise, the edits don't bother me too much. It's on TV for free (well, mostly). I like to think of it as a preview for the DVD/Blu-Ray release.

Re: Do the TV Edits Bother You?
In certain ways. I really don't care about Kai all that much, especially not the English version (except for the possibility of finally setting a good precedent). But I do follow, for example, Tanooki Kuribo's comparison thread, and I have become increasingly frustrated with the lack of cohesion of edits combined wtih the fact that it matches and sometimes surpasses the ridiculous level of censorship from the Saban days, and I just feel like we've suddenly taken so many steps back!
And as far as what everyone else is saying, I've long since resigned myself to the fact that television is the worst place to actually watch television. But then I think about how little sense that actually makes if one thinks about it, and I get a bit depressed.

Re: Do the TV Edits Bother You?
Television and radio have become the worst places to watch TV and listen to music. As far as TV edits are concerned they bother me but to an extent. I can watch an edited show but mentally I'm constantly noting many, if not all of the edits. I just like the idea of shows that I like (DBZ Kai) being on TV to promote the home releases so that they sell well and since the home releases are usually uncut its a win situation in that aspect.

I can't watch it live on TV because I'm not in US but I can still watch it on Nicktoons site
The edit is kinda bothering me
The edit is kinda bothering me
Re: Do the TV Edits Bother You?
Yes, it infuriates me. Not particularly because of the way Nick Toons edit Kai. But for the fact I now know that other animes are censored from the manga. Such as Naruto and Naruto Shippuuden. Also, what they do is edit that for TV for Japan. And they don't put an actual real uncut version on the DVD. Why? Why the hell WHY? We really lost some intensity in certain scenes in Naruto. Even in Kai aired in Japan. It's insulting to have a bruise on Goku's chest.
Then in Japan they claim it's uncut, even though they butchered some scenes or removed them completely. Then they still claim it's really uncut. Because that's the way they made it. Then it comes to the United States, and they butcher it as best that they can.(Why don't they just come to my house and gouge my eyes out while their at it too?)
And this goes for TV in general also. They butcher movies to the point, where they muted the whole dialogue conversation a movie I was watching. I didn't even know what they said. It's pathetic. Well, at least for movies, you can get the actual real experience you are so suppose to get if you buy the movie. But they can't do it for a cartoon now? It's kind of lame and disappointing.
They also censored Dragon Ball manga. Viz did. That also bothers me. What's the point? It's a cartoon. The nudity is stupid, but just keep it there anyways. And if Japan is going to censor stuff on TV, why don't they have a true uncensored uncut version it on DVD?
Kai is a viral scam, used to money milk old dbz obsessed fans, it's literally a recompiled and re-censored piece of poop in the United States. They honestly don't care one shit about what this is, they wanted the money. Nick Toons is not taking pride in putting this show on there. They are literally laughing and mocking the show as they are editing it, probably. They know it's not the type of show that should be on their channel. It's all about money. I've seen other networks actually take pride to what shows actually should be on their channel.
I don't even think kids are watching Kai on Nick Toons.

Actually, it was the highest premier of their channel, and some triple digit jumps in viewings of certain key age groups when compared to last year.SSVegetto wrote:Yes, it infuriates me. Funi's taking pride in legitimately trying to give us the best they can in as uncut a release as they can. And they are with the home release. That said, eventually, more fans need to be drawn into the series or the fanbase stagnates (eventually). And tv airings do a lot more for awareness than your average home release (advertisement, no paying just for that product, etc).

It definitely bothers me. However, I just watch my Dragon Box instead. Kai, alone, bothers me.

Huh? What channel, Toei or Nick Toons? What age groups? I'm confused.Mewzard wrote:Actually, it was the highest premier of their channel, and some triple digit jumps in viewings of certain key age groups when compared to last year.
Well, I'm not really insulting Funi. I'm just insulting Nick Toons for edits. Insulting Japan for censoring manga parts. Then I'm insulting Toei for censoring DBZ and putting it into Kai, and remaking it, and then EVERYONE else just for flat out milking everything for money. Of course Funi will say anything for money. They will tell you the sky is purple if it means that it would make them more money for them. Then I'm insulting Viz for censoring the manga. It just never ends, we never get an uncensored anything anymore for anime anymore. It is getting worse and worse. I'm over 18, I want to watch completely uncensored version of the manga in anime form. And this is all due to money and profits and manipulating children's channels. Put it this way, I can watch the movie "Saw" rated "R" uncut on DVD. Gore in its entirety. But I can't watch a certain gore scene in Kai or in Naruto(Cartoons), because they are too lazy to make it 100% purely uncut like it was from the manga. To make it on the DVD. What the hell is going on here?Mewzard wrote:Funi's taking pride in legitimately trying to give us the best they can in as uncut a release as they can. And they are with the home release. And to make a point here. I hate Kai, anyways, it doesn't matter what Funimation does to Kai. I'm not going to get all excited about an accurate English dub in my opinion wasn't far from accurate anyways in DBZ. But like Mountain said, "Kai alone bothers him". Same here, I'm just worried about this whole editing and censorship issues on TV.

Re: Do the TV Edits Bother You?
The edits wouldn't bother me...if they weren't so distracting. I can handle changed dialogue, digital editing, and even the removal of hits to the body, but when they cut out hits to the body or whatever they find inappropriate, and it makes no sense (story wise), then I get annoyed. For example, in episode 15 they cut out Vegeta crushing Gokuh's legs, so seemingly out of nowhere Gokuh starts screaming it agony while grasping his face. I was confused for several seconds till I finally realized he was in pain because Vegeta crushed his legs and they cut it out.

I think kids are watching. Sure I don't like the edits myself, but this is Nicktoons/CW4Kids standards of censorship, not FUNis. had this been on CN the silly edits would have not occurred I think, but each cable network has its own standards, so I can't be angry with FUNi. heck, if this brings new fans of DBZ then so be it and all for the good of it.SSVegetto wrote:Yes, it infuriates me. No. If I don't like it, I can just get the DVDs. This isn't like back in the day when Japanese masters were hard to come by.

Re: Do the TV Edits Bother You?
I think it's a bothersome, specfically because of what Kai is. It's already a re-edited, redubbed version of a previous. Editing it some more and redubbing some of the already redubbed lines for TV might just confuse the hell out of people. Funi hasn't done that good a job of explaining what Kai is in the first place. Quite often on other boards I see people who clearly only have a very basic idea of what Kai is, and they think the Nicktoons version almost completely uncensored, and that whatever edits were made are just part of Kai.

Re: Do the TV Edits Bother You?
It bothers me a lot, because the TV Version is what most people get their impression of Dragon Ball.
It's already bad enough that Kai is a censored product, but the TV version has even MORE censors when it comes to blood and dialogue.
It bothers me because I sometimes feel embarrassed to say "I'm a DBZ fan" or "I like Dragonball." Because of the TV Edits, the show can't be taken as seriously as it should be. It's just viewed as a stupid kid's show, and yes, I am aware that DBZ was originally intended to be a children's cartoon, but the fact remains that the American Broadcast version is dumbed down to a point where it can't even be taken seriously.
I mean, just compare the TV version to the DVD/BD. All accounts of swearing and blood are removed. Hell, the TV Version keeps dodging the use of the word "die" as well.
I guess it's just embarrassing for me as a fan you know, I believe censorship is just a crime; you're taking away from what the artist originally presented and wanted.

Re: Do the TV Edits Bother You?
I dunno. I would argue that the Toonami showing was definitely the better edit as far as visuals, the Nicktoons edit is definitely the better edit as far as dialogue. The dialogue is still pretty damn accurate, and the removal of words such as "die" and "kill"...don't get me wrong, having those there would be nice, but whenever I see those on TV I don't really even hear them that way in my head. In my head, I know that that's censorship, so I'm just like, "Oh, they said 'die.' "MetalMadness wrote:It bothers me a lot, because the TV Version is what most people get their impression of Dragon Ball.

As for other people thinking it's more "dumb" than it actually is, that doesn't bother me a ton either because I think a lot of people are able to connect the dots and realize what's really going on. I mean, even when I was a kid watching the Saban/Ocean dub where they were using the dreaded "Next Dimension," I realized even then that people were killing each other and dying. In fact, I didn't even realize that that term was a censorship effort at first, I thought it was just a cool way of talking about death. When I learned years later that it was supposed to be a way of *avoiding* the topic of death, I was like, "...Wait, what? That's just stupid, it was totally obvious people were dying."
Anyway, that's just my two cents, not meant to be the definitive view by any means. By all means, continue the discussion.

Re: Do the TV Edits Bother You?
The only thing that bothers me is the inconsistency(only a little, though) and the fact that things really small are changed, that can easily be kept.
For instance...changing Nappa's line in the "Over 8000/9000" scene, when it was already the same as the Saban lines...which is what they were apparently going for.

Which is why I don't think Funi should have licensed this product in the first place and gave Toei money. They should have stuck it to Toei and not done a thing. Because they censored it and ruined it. But of course they care more about the money. Doesn't Funi have any other animes to do then to waste their time re-milking a series that is censored? They already released the uncensored version of DBZ on Toonami. Now that was great.MetalMadness wrote:It's already bad enough that Kai is a censored product, but the TV version has even MORE censors when it comes to blood and dialogue.
