Who Hates Dragon Ball?
Re: Who Hates Dragon Ball?
Dragonball is really awesome, I actually kinda ALMOST like it more than dbz.
Re: Who Hates Dragon Ball?
I just got done watching two episodes of Dragon Ball, 64 and 65, and they were fucking awesome. At first, you might think the cuts to Kame House in 64 are badly placed and contain overdone physical comedy, but it sets up some hilarious stuff in 65. Goku gives a beatdown to Tao, and the in-between fighting animation is great. At the end of 65, we get a montage of Goku's adventures before he storms the Red Ribbon HQ, while this plays over it.
It's no more boring than nothing happening in Z. Go watch DBZ Episode 226, I dare you.

Uhh, I don't hate it. I mean, it's has it weakpoints like the Red Ribbon Army arc and the Son Goku arc, but it's still really fun to watch. I wouldn't go so far as to say it's better than Z though.

Re: Who Hates Dragon Ball?
I used to not like Dragonball when I first got into the series because at first I loved DBZ for all the cool fighting but as I got older I understood what the show was really about and when I watched Dragonball for the first time it instantly became my favourite of the the three. Like the others have said, the adventure is what really is great to me.
I wanted a mission, and for my sins, they gave me one.

Re: Who Hates Dragon Ball?
I'll admit it... I really don't care for the Red Ribbon Army arc.
The anime version dragged on forever, and the original manga portion still felt like Toriyama was trying to work out the kinks in his action/comedy storytelling. So... we got some mundane villains, and the slightly interesting ones (Blue) were overused to the point of Team Rocket-esque tedium. After the excellent beginning to the series and the equally excellent 21st Tenkaichi Budokai, it was disappointing that that arc felt more like a generic kids manga at that point. It has it's highlights (Murasaki, Tao Paipai, Goku reuniting with his Grandpa), but it honestly fails to keep my attention for more than a couple episodes...
I'll tell you right now though, the Piccolo Daimao and 23rd Budokai arcs are where it's at, son!

Nothing matters (in a cosmic sense.) Have a good time.
Re: Who Hates Dragon Ball?
I never had a problem with the Red Ribbon Army Arc. But then again I never read the manga so I had nothing to compare it to.
Re: Who Hates Dragon Ball?
I was avoiding this thread because I honestly don't know if I hate anything about DB. But after briefly skimming through some of the replies here I realized that there are some small parts of the series I really hated. For starters I'm not happy at all with the English dub of DB, if that counts. Sure it grows on you after a few episodes but it could've been a hundred times better in my opinion.
Also the arc where Bulma, Goku, and Krillin had that underwater cave pirate adventure thing was booorrriiinggg. I really hated those episodes it felt like a long filler. Other than those two things I don't really have a problem with DB. It's one of my favorite animes (and manga) and I loved the RR arc. It was favorite saga out of the entire DB series.

Re: Who Hates Dragon Ball?
It's kind of hard to explain but it's mostly the choice in dialog. Like for instance when Oolong turns into a bull and starts speaking in a terrible Spanish accent. Or when characters make terrible puns that are not in the manga.KakaR0T wrote:What don't you like about it?Scarz wrote:For starters I'm not happy at all with the English dub of DB, if that counts.

Haha, I loved those under water episodes myself xD, and I really can't think of anything I hate about Dragonball, to be honest. Watching Dragonball is a major blast, I think.Scarz wrote:I was avoiding this thread because I honestly don't know if I hate anything about DB. Re: Who Hates Dragon Ball?
The original Dragon Ball has plenty of character development, though. Not just later end Dragon Ball, either; it's something that's been present since the very beginning of the series. Even just limiting things to the Pilaf arc, Oolong's arguably the only of the five mains that's still the exact same person. I'd say that Toriyama's style of character development is pretty much consistent from the start, long before the story as a whole's matured and come into its own.SSVegetto wrote:I don't like animes much where the author doesn't really give it a good plot line, storyline, or character development.

Re: Who Hates Dragon Ball?
But that's the weakpoint of most of the series, the beginning. It's introduction and serves as the starting point and build up into the next arcs. I can't imagine Dragon Ball series to start for example with exploding universe and Goku and Brolli smashing their faces in asteroid field with some flashback later to the beginnings:DPiccolo Daimaoh wrote:Uhh, I don't hate it. Lot of series I watched have ''boring'' introductions, if they aren't started in some action (like Shippuden, but it's sequel) or some adventure (Gintama - I remember that the manga started differently) and later they are backing it up with flashbacks.
I prefer these more settled ones like in Dragon Ball and Naruto, but One Piece bored me too much and I thought I'm quite old for this, but some jokes were good. I think the main problem is, I never was much interested in pirates since my childhood.
Except Captain Harlock:D
One beggining I like pretty much is Gundam, when Amuro is living some peaceful life on space colony and then, BOOM, robot invaders. And in Gundam F91 it's much better.
DRAGON BALL SECTION (finally)
The biggest weakpoint in the series for me are the Cell Games. I like Saiyan, Freeza and Androids saga, but I think that it's little overdone with Cell, I was pretty bored, then excited with Goku vs Cell and then again, bored. I enjoyed a lot more The Otherworld Tournament which is ironically filler.
Otherwise I can't find weakpoint in original Dragon Ball series as anime, Introductions are always kinda weak, but great characters with awesome humor, Tenkaichi Budokai is one of the highlights of the series after main Dragon Ball themed story. Great fighting techniques and also some backstory on participants. RR Arc - Colonel Silver was quite boring, but Muscle Tower got me mostly with humor, especially Ninja Ametyst:D:D General Blue was also overkill with Toshio Furukawa on the role and later the Assault on Red Ribbon HQ was pretty skirmish which is a lot more awesome after the more settled arcs. Uranai Baba arc had some nice backstory about Baba and interesting original fighters, the between filler is one of my most favorite things about the series and I like Goku's stolen dougi from Shu. Tenkaichi Budokai again, great I like Tenshinhan as antagonist and I'm dissapointed by that Dragon Ball rule, deadly enemy becomes best friend and his personality is changed completely. I know it's one of the main themes of this series, but I like it how it's executed with Vegeta, which got some real character development in comparisson to Tenshinhan who switched from evil too good almost by clicking the button. Piccolo arcs are my favorites in the whole series, so I think I don't need to make a comment.

Re: Who Hates Dragon Ball?
I want to know where this "awesome humor" is in early DB.
Or how "adventure" dominates DB at all.

Re: Who Hates Dragon Ball?
How "early" are we talking? While on the plane to get to the RR base, everyone is debating whether this is a good idea. The scene cuts to Oolong, who brought a bouquet of flowers, under the assumption Goku's dead. I didn't bust my gut, but it's an easy enough joke to get.Rocketman wrote:I want to know where this "awesome humor" is in early DB.

I don't hate Dragon Ball by any means. I love Dragon Ball. With that being said, I do find Dragon Ball to be boring when compared to Z.

This.
