What's the remastering like on the Double Features?

Post by DragonBoxZTheMovies » Fri Jun 11, 2010 11:14 pm

Hope this isn't too much to ask but what's the remastering like on Movies 1, 2, 3, 4, 10, 11, 12, 13 and the two tv specials?

I don't know the nitty-gritty specifics of it, but personally, I quite liked the remastering on the double features. Leagues better than the singles, IMO.

Here's a picture from movie 8

AGAIN: Movie 8 is NOT the best movie to use as an example of the remastering process.

It was done before any of the other movies. It's blurrier and the colors are brighter. All of the other movies look far better.

I did some comparisons back in 07-08 as these things were coming out. My verdict, not as crystal clear as the Dragon Boxes, and the colors are slightly different, but they look quite nice and even better than the 4:3 singles. The Double Features are in 16:9 widescreen format, which was always the intended viewing format for the movies.

The two minor faults of the Double Features is that the Japanese audio is somewhat muffled, and there are only the English dub title cards and credits, whereas the singles have both English and Japanese titles/credits.

Here are some of the comparisons I did for Movies 3 & 4 (Double Features vs. Singles):

These screenshots remind me of Kai's reanimated scenes. The blurriness and "remastered" process made them look like flash animation. Not that it's a bad thing, I mean they look nice, but really aren't suppose to be that.

I thought movie 8 looked decent and still definately better than the movie 8 single.

In the DF, Tullece skin looks blacker so that's a plus and the colors looks natural so that's a plus!

It's awesome because that's what his skin colour is suppose to be. :)

Haha, no way. The lines and shading still look a lot more natural than Kai--not to mention the difference will be even more noticable in motion.

Besides, you can't deny it's a huge step up from the singles (although it's a little annoying that the double features only have the English titles, given that most of them are ugly as hell.)

Haha, oh yeah. I know they look better in motion and no where near what the Kai scenes look like. I was just saying that's what came to my mind when I saw the screen caps.

Yeah, the English only titles really sucks, but they are a HUGE step up.

Easily the finest looking Dragon Ball footage Funimation has ever released outside of the Dragon Box.

Yes the remastering on the Double Features IMO is very good, not Dragon Box quality, but it's good compared to FUNi's other remastered work. Plus they are cheap and come in awesome steelbooks.

I kept my steelbooks but sold the remastered sets, but I would get the Dragon Box Movies if FUNi ever releases them.

The Dragon Box of the movies are totally worth it just for the audio alone, the sound effects and music are remixed into stereo and sound just lovely, while the FUNi singles and Double Features aren't bad, but slightly muffled.

If you get the Dragon Box Movies would you sell your steelbooks?

From DBOX the movies, I'd consider getting these and sell the steelbooks.

If you want shots from any of the movies just reply, I just had this one in my computer at the time.

I actually prefer the Double Features remastering to the Dragon Box remastering. The colours are brighter and there's less grain.

One thing I like better about the double features is that they come in BluRay. And they look gorgeous in HD, simply beautiful.
That's why I think of getting them as soon as I get a PS3 and finish my DBOX collection.
