Well, part of why I like Z more is in fact because of it's more action-oriented tone. Seriously, would any of you watch the series if there was no action in it?

Re: Who Hates Dragon Ball?
Sure it won't be the same, but Dragon Ball was a gag manga with slapstick humor to begin with. I wouldn't mind if it remained that way.Piccolo Daimaoh wrote:Well, part of why I like Z more is in fact because of it's more action-oriented tone. Re: Who Hates Dragon Ball?
I just remembered something... "Kateikyoushi Hitman Reborn".
It started as a gag manga, right? And I think in some part, it switched to an action battle manga.
Do fans of this series see the earlier stuff the same way with how Dragon Ball is disliked compared to DBZ?

Re: Who Hates Dragon Ball?
I like Dragon Ball. In fact, I think it's far better than Z or GT, because it's the most balanced of the three and there's a fresh idea in each new section of the story. However, I do prefer Z to DB, simply because it's a more action-oriented part of the story, and it doesn't have as many dull bits as Dragon Ball. Currently, I only own 7 volumes of the original Dragon Ball manga, whereas I have all 26 volumes of Dragon Ball Z (which I read far more than DB). Maybe sometime I'll buy some more volumes, because I want to get back into reading the original Dragon Ball (especially the 22nd Budokai onwards).
I understand why some fans who grew up with Z may dislike Dragon Ball because there's no Super Saiyans or as much action. I didn't give it a chance at first either. But as I bought more volumes and the story began to progress, I began to become more interested in it. Yes, at first Dragon Ball is an adventure story, with not much ki-blasting and fast-paced fighting going on, but you just get caught up in the story and realize it's as compelling and absorbing an adventure as Z. And even then, if those fans still dislike Dragon Ball after finishing it, I don't see why they would have any reason to. It's a solid series in its own right. How can you hate something the series you love evolved from?

Re: Who Hates Dragon Ball?
He didn't say there was no action in Dragon Ball, just that Z is more oriented around action (i.e. more fast-paced battling, planet-busting ki blasts, suspenseful moments, etc.) than Dragon Ball.B wrote:There's plenty of action in Dragon Ball.Piccolo Daimaoh wrote:Well, part of why I like Z more is in fact because of it's more action-oriented tone. Re: Who Hates Dragon Ball?
When I watch Dragon Ball for the first time (hopefully, the Blue bricks will be cheaper), I know it won't be as action-packed as DBZ (everyone suggests it is this way). But that's not gonna stop me from enjoying the show. I've heard how DB is more about fun, adventure, comedy etc., rather than the DBZ action.
In particular, it's the comedy and adventure that's making me long for DB.

What I wouldn't give for DBZ be just like DB. It is by far the best part of the series. GT doesn't count.
Re: Who Hates Dragon Ball?
For what it's worth, most of GT plays itself a hell of a lot closer to DB.Senzu_Bean wrote:What I wouldn't give for DBZ be just like DB. It is by far the best part of the series. GT doesn't count.
Seems like basically what you were asking for. Why the extreme hate?

GT isn't anything like DB at all. You can't slap a searching Dragon Balls adventure and say it is closer to DB.Cipher wrote:For what it's worth, most of GT plays itself a hell of a lot closer to DB.Senzu_Bean wrote:What I wouldn't give for DBZ be just like DB. The Majin Buu arc is far more closer to DB than GT ever was.

I didn't say Dragon Ball wasn't action oriented, I just said Z is more action oriented with all the Ki blasts and flying and whatnot.B wrote:There's plenty of action in Dragon Ball.Piccolo Daimaoh wrote:Well, part of why I like Z more is in fact because of it's more action-oriented tone. Re: Who Hates Dragon Ball?
Part of the reason I like Dragon Ball more than the latter half (I refuse to use anime terminology because it's just a continuation and separating the two bring about mundane responses and arguments such as on this subject) is because of the overall story and sense of adventure before it became it a full fledged battle manga/anime. I love manga that are generally based on a world construct and history that sets up for a narrative and adventure type story. Battles are just mere icing on the cake. Any sacrifice for a storyline to just bring about battles really loses a lot of impact to me.

Re: Who Hates Dragon Ball?
Dragonball is not an adventure manga, why do people keep saying that.
Re: Who Hates Dragon Ball?
Because it is? It is to them. Why is that such a big deal? It's got action, comedy, adventure. So therefore if they want to say it's action manga they can. If they want to say it's a comedy manga they can. What are you saying dude?Rocketman wrote:Dragonball is not an adventure manga, why do people keep saying that.
Re: Who Hates Dragon Ball?
I think he's saying that Toriyama didn't intend for it to be a Adventure manga. More-so a martial arts/comedy manga.

Re: Who Hates Dragon Ball?
I'm saying they're wrong. The very first arc is the only one of the entire gigantic mass that's adventure. In a pinch, you can spot the Red Ribbon Army arc as half-adventure. But that's it. DB has three martial arts tournaments and the King Piccolo arc that aren't adventure in any way.SSVegetto wrote:Because it is? It is to them. Why is that such a big deal? If you think DB is all adventure, then I have to ask if you've seen anything past Pilaf.
