Why Dragon Ball?

Post by Plague-Memories » Sun Jun 13, 2010 9:24 pm

Don't take this as a thread started by someone who hates the series, because I absolutely love Dragon Ball(meaning the original and Z).

I'm just curious what about Dragon Ball attracts you to it?
Why, out of the countless anime out there, do you choose Dragon Ball?

Basically, I'm just asking what you love about Dragon Ball and what about it always draws you back to it. :)

Nostalgia and a sense of whimsy.

Basically, if I hadn't watched this series as a kid, there's no way I'd have started now, and I don't think it would have hooked me now. But since I'm already into it, I find new things to appreciate about it all the time. Its self-aware sense of humor, its '90s sensibility, the ridiculous escalation, the aging of the characters, etc.

I'm not even sure I know the answer to this question myself.

I guess seeing Gohan turn Super Saiya-jin 2 at the Tenkaichi Budokai was cool and I was 5 when I saw it.

I really dunno, it's kinda just one of those questions you know the answer but don't know the best way to answer it.

Cipher pretty much answered this one for me. The nostalgia of watching the series as a kid (even though I've moved on to the original version), '90s sensibility, aging of the characters, and other things I can't think of at the moment.

Actually, there is one more thing. The music. It's so unique and sounds so different than most of the other anime soundtracks I've heard. It just evokes a sense of adventure and excitement. That may sound corny, but it really sets the mood for the story.

To be honest, so many other anime to me are similar and unoriginal. DragonBall, even compared to other series during its time, is so unique for reasons already stated, at least in my opinion.

There is no such thing as originality; only quality in execution. That being said, the way Dragon Ball is executed makes it stand out from its basic plotlines of become stronger, save the world, etc.

Characters mostly. :3 I really like Goku's character type and while I enjoy most of the cast, he was the one that grabbed my attention. Also, I enjoy action-adventure series.

If I'd have started DB now, like if I was completely new to the series, I probably still would've only picked up the manga, and would buy the VizBigs like I did with Kenshin.

I find I just can't do super-long-running anime series anymore. I don't have the time or patience. If I was a starting newbie now, anime-wise I think I'd only watch the movies, maybe some important episodes. That's what I do with One Piece. (I haven't even read all of One Piece. I love it, but it's just so mind-boggling long.) I have way more patience when it comes to reading than watching.
On hiatus.

I loved martial arts when I was a teenager, and I also liked franco-belgian comics, though I wasn't introduced to manga yet (I watched Astro boy as a kid but I didn't know it was Japanese)

Anyway someone bought me the first issue of Dragon Ball manga early in 1997 and since it was a comic book and it was about martial arts, I was immediately hooked (same reason I later started reading Ranma 1/2). At that time the manga were only translated up to volume 24 in french so after that I had to do with VHS fansubs

I'm attracted by things, that are unique in this series, art and story. Nostalgia is the second reason for it)))

It was unique and original during its time. Probably one of the first Jump manga that took battles to the extreme with creatures destroying planets with a poke of a finger and shooting beams from all of your body and fighting while flying.

And when the the rest of world grew up with Tom & Jerry, Mickey Mouse and The Flintstones, it stood out as a cartoon.

Nowadays, most of battle manga and especially from Jump, are ripping-off Dragon Ball in every possible ways from characters, to attacks, and sometimes plot to the point of being proclaimed as "The Next Dragon Ball Z", which is saddens me because most of them are clichéd, superficial stories and do not deserve to be labeled as such. Like Naruto, the show that gave a bad name to ninjas and ripped of Goku's colors, and BLEACH for some reason is called "DBZ with swords" when it's a rip-off of YuYu Hakusho.

One Piece on the other hand... it's only with Luffys personality. The rest is nothing like Dragon Ball.

I was first hooked because, in all honesty, I'm a sci-fi geek. The space stories, Saiyan armor, strange people and locations, creepy music (especially sometimes on Namek), etc. DB just wasn't your typical "samurai battle in the courtyard of the school" type anime. It has character.

Toriyama's great artwork, charming characters, and the action. There are some other reasons but those are the first to come to mind when I think about why I like the comic. The anime is my favorite comic animated so that's why I like. I also love the music, voice cast, and seeing the characters in situations that weren't present in the manga.

I only read the first issue and I liked it, but from what I heard it gets bad quickly

Dragonball isn't stuck up its own ass with angst and pseudo-psychological bullshit.

Exactly, I despise giant gooey eyed melodrama.
