The censoring was done for the rereleases, though, they were originally published unedited. There were also a bunch of other changes done to the series. It all seems terribly unnecessary, but there you have it.

Were the first unedited releases by Viz? If so can you find them on ebay?

I bought the box set, and like rereboy said some are more edited than others. For the most part most nudity is intact except for a few (in mine anyway). Box set included a special booklet regarding best fights, lines, a little quick synopsis of the story, and a 2 sided poster similar to this (but it has Goku, ChiChi, Bulma, Yamcha, just the main characters of Dragonball), I can't find a picture online of it: http://i393.photobucket.com/albums/pp16 ... nballz.jpg

Anyways, I got the boxset because I thought it was a great value, and it came with the special booklet and poster.

As for your question, Viz has released the manga fully uncut in some form. Here's from MagicBox's post at FUNimation regarding it:

Manga Wave 2: Uncut, White Novels (Dragon Ball Vol. 1-10, Dragon Ball Z Vol. 1-10)

This version of the manga was 100% uncut and unedited, artwork-wise, at least for Dragon Ball. The dialogue and text were translated very accurately, and each volume had a "For Ages 13 & Up" sticker on the front cover to let readers know that these were completely unaltered from the original version. Dragon Ball Z wasn't so lucky, but the edits made were very minor compared to Viz's later treatment of the series. 10 volumes from Dragon Ball and 10 volumes from Dragon Ball Z were released in this wave, and fans were very pleased with this fan-friendly version of the manga. The best way to tell these volumes apart from the other waves is the white background with little dragons spread throughout it, and the fact that these were much bigger than normal manga (They were about two inches taller and two inches wider than the normal manga size.). These are extremely hard to find nowadays, and have been completely replaced by Viz's third and fourth waves of the DragonBall manga in retail stores. After manga started becoming more popular in the states, Viz decided to discontinue this wave and release novels that were the proper size.

I think Tom Dubois of "The Boondocks" said it best for me when FUNimation announced the release of the domestic Dragonbox, after buying all of the Season Sets: "MOTHERFUCK!!! SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT, PRICKS, SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIIIIIIIT!"

Actually no, Oolong`s mental image of the Puff-Puff in volume 1 had the nipples censored in every version of the manga, for example, and Mr. Popo always had his lips censored (although he only appears late in the DB story). So no, its not fully uncut. It just so happens that its one of those versions that have even less censorship. Since the Vizbigs already have slight censorship, a version with even fewer edits, almost looks uncut. Such is the case with those editions.

Ahh! Thanks for the heads up on that rereboy. I was doing research when I was getting the DB manga, and I came up on that. Since MagicBox does know what he's talking about, I assumed from that post that the original white novels didn't have cuts. Which leads me to believe, was the first wave (Shonen Jump version here in America) fully uncut then, since the white novels had extremely few edits.

Is this it http://cgi.ebay.com/Dragon-Ball-Manga-D ... 244wt_1139

I have found all of them on the internet, mostly used for cheap, they go for over fifty dollars new. Do you recommend I get the original set?

I would be careful. I think Bussani (I think) has one of those white manga editions and they are very censored. Even those have different editions.

I just got back from barnes and nobles, they had the first volume of the recent viz manga, and bulmas nude scenes are shown throughout, did I buy the wrong volumes. Can anyone confirm that the original viz white mangas are indeed uncut?

I really wouldn`r risk it... I mean, a full uncut release doesn`t exist. You can not buy the 42 Volumes uncut because that doesn`t exist. The maximum you can do is look for volumes which have the first volumes almost uncut. So, why go through the trouble of getting old Volumes which might not be as unedited as you hope for, when you know that you won`t get the manga completely uncut no matter what you do, and there is a very good release out there which only has a very slight censorship and everything about it is better than the previous releases?

I don`t get why people want the uncut this much. I would also prefer that the Vizbigs were uncut, but I won`t buy old volumes of inferior paper quality and small frame just to see Bulma`s boobs

Btw, my daizenshuu arrived today. Its awesome.

In a short answer (in what would of been a longer one if I wasn't so tired lol) is that we want something that the other had in its original format. I'd say that a lot of us are purists. We want something left untouched, no matter the product. With the Dragonbox, it is the same that Japan got, except we got an extra audio option. I wouldn't mind a censored version targeted towards kids for places like libraries and schools, but for those who are older and want something exactly the same the Japanese got, release an uncut version.

And sweet that you got the Daizenshuu! I love that book... the art is just amazing. My favorite is the one where all are dressed up nicely with a casino theme. :)

They're not. Like people keep saying, there aren't any uncut editions by Viz, only less cut editions (although some volumes might have nothing to cut at all, so I suppose they count as "uncut"...but I'm talking about the whole 42 volumes, obviously).
rereboy wrote:I would be careful. I think Bussani (I think) has one of those white manga editions and they are very censored. Even those have different editions.
Yes indeed. I own some of those white covered ones, and my copies are far more edited than the red cover ones I got to replace them recently. I was pleasantly surprised by that.

I really need to scan my old white-cover ones. Some of the jokes get completely ruined thanks to the censorship. And I'm not talking about things like Bulma having a bra when Kuririn pulls her shirt down--I'm talking like, completely editing out that Goku takes Bulma's underwear off before they meet Roshi, or completely editing out the part where Goku...checks...to see if Chichi is a girl.

So yeah, I'd advise against getting those ones. VizBigs are the easiest choice. There are less censored versions (the smaller, newer tankobon releases), but you won't know that they are unless you look inside and know exactly what you're looking for; quite impractical.

I have First Editions of volumes 1-16 of this version: Image They're completely uncut except for Oolong's puff-puff and Mr. Popo's lips.

That, I understand. But when you already know that a fully uncut complete version of the manga doesn`t exist, why go through the trouble of getting lower quality versions just for a few extra edits less?

I can tell you right now exactly what isn`t censored in those less censored versions and what still is.

(this is a Mr popo example. I only put this one as an example because this happens every time he appears)

Besides those, Black also has his lips altered to make them look darker.

Those are all the edits that exist in DB. In DBZ, there are only 3 edits. They censored Gohan`s nudity, they removed Future #17 gun from his hand to make it look like it didn`t kill an old man with a gun but with his hand, and the rifles of the punks who shot Buu`s dog are altered to make it look like laser rifles (futuristics rifles) instead of realistic rifles.
Like I said in this post, this is the censorship of the Vizbigs. The most unedited edition of the manga keeps the edits to Mr. Popo`s lips, the edits to Oolong`s mental image, the removal of 17`s gun and the alteration of those goon`s rifles.

Or, in other words, it removes the censorship to almost all the nudity and to the middle fingers, and keeps the rest.

Like I said, I understand wanting it fully uncut. And I want that too. What I don`t understand is preferring a inferior release, which still has censorship, but that shows nudity in some panels and some middle fingers in others.

Since I won`t get it uncut (it doesn`t exist), I much prefer that my manga has better paper quality, bigger size and most of the color pages, than a few panels with nudity and a few middle fingers.

I would only be interested in an inferior quality release if in fact it was truly and completely uncut. Because its not, I have the Vizbigs and, if I truly want those few less edits, I will buy the individual volumes that have less censorship than the Vizbigs, but not the entire inferior quality release.
