I think i'll be able to judge this more when I hear Freeza's 2nd to last form, that will be the true test in my book.

When Canadians or Americans try to imitate a British dialect, it generally isn't good. Paul Dobson however was pretty good at it. His Zarbon did not have an Australian dialect, it was closer to a British dialect but I wouldn't say it was spot on. I give him credit for pronouncing certain words correctly (such as Can't; the a is pronounced like the a in Gohan.) Kevin Kline did a pretty good Australian (with a bit of New Zealand) dialect imitation for his character Rod McCain in Fierce Creatures, Paul's Zarbon does not sound like that.
I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. When I listen to Dobson's Zarbon, I hear the rounder vowels and more open delivery of certain Australian dialects. It does not sound British to me.

Based on comments from people that had previously heard the voice at conventions, Mr. Schemmel and Mr. Sabat, I was expecting something completely different from what I have heard before in the English dub. I don't have much experience with other dubs of Dragon Ball Z other than the original Toei Animation, The Ocean Group, FUNimation Entertainment and Intertrack S.A de C.V. dub. Having said that, Freeza and Freezer are portrayed in a very sinister way but then you get to Frieza... (I dislike this spelling, his first name isn't Victor...)

I agree with Mr. LaBrie with his example of how Frieza should sound like. He should sound cold, calculating and most importantly, sinister. This does make it seem that FUNimation is hesitating in taking that leap of faith and changing the character. Why get a replacement actor to only make him sound like the previous actress? True, I am making an opinion on only a few lines BUT first impressions are everything and unfortunately, this one was very lackluster.

I will continue to check in on Z Kai and hopefully form a better opinion on the voice once I have heard more of it.

Well judging how little we heard of Chris Ayres, I feel that his take on Freeza is a definite improvement over both Pauline Newstone and Linda Young. I do hear a little inspiration from Linda Young but I agree it is deeper and more raspy. I don't understand how some hear a little of Newstone in it because that was not my initial reaction upon hearing it twice. :| *shrug* Though as many have said already there is too little to go on just yet but the next episode has much more of Freeza in it and will give us a better idea of Ayres' performance. While not quite on the same level of villianry as Ryusei Nakao, I feel that Chris Ayres is easier to listen too then his predecessors and a little more like the Freeza I like to envision.

P.S. Is it just me or does Ayres' take on Freeza sound insidiously inhuman? To me that is a good direction to go and I hope we are not disappointed.

Ayres' Freeza sounds SO much like Newstone's Freeza (at the beginning of his sentence anyways). Hearing it reminded me of that creepy scene where Freeza caresses the Dragon Balls.

I honestly can't understand how anyone for a second can hear Young in that voice, at all. Even the Newstone quality to the voice is superficial in similarity.

I can't wait to hear more of this voice, I have a good feeling about it. If one line so far can capture the sinister and cold quality to Freeza, I think this character is in good hands. I also have a feeling a lot of "done" fans are gonna go hyperbole and change their minds very soon.

I kind of hear the original Pioneer Freeza in there too. The truth is, what's the point of recasting Freeza if he still TRIES to sound like a female?

You know, Chris Ayres was at a convention this weekend, so I'm wondering if he talked about Freeza at all, or if someone approached him about it?

Well, the truth is, It sounds more like an IT than anything. I'm certainly not confusing it for a woman, that's for sure.

Okay, sounds like an "it." Linda Young also sounded like an "it" when the performance was done with the raspy voice too.

But the big diffrence is, with Newstone and Linda, I ALWAYS knew it was a "women putting on a scary voice" no matter what.

Can't say the same here with this genuinely creepy and well delivered line from Ayres.

Found the preview for episode 21 on the Nicktoons site. There's more of Chris Ayres' Freeza:

And wow, he sounds so much better.

Same that's weird. Considering we both live in the US. I though it blocked off only non-US users?
