Well um...okay? It just seems like he doesn't like male characters being voiced by girls.
I don't like it too.

I can't COUNT how many vehement dub fans, even ones who loved Young's portrayal of Freeza, make the "Goku sounds like a girl" comment.
That...wasn't what I was responding to. It was the base of why I posted that in the first place as it seemed like you were trying to make it symbolic of something.

The "he even makes the 'Goku sounds like a girl' complaint" was supposed to communicate just how much he is NOT a fan of the Japanese version.

Anyone mind uploading the episode 21 Freeza clip somewhere? I can't get the website's player to work.

So far I am digging the new Zarbon and Freeza.

Geez, just listened to all of the clips of the new Freeza, and... it seriously sucks. :? I really, really, really, really do not get what everyone seems so happy about. It's completely and utterly boring and generic. :?

For those that live outside the US, here's a collection of Freeza clips from episode 20 and a bit of 21. Clicky click for YouTube video.

What exactly where you expecting?

I like the new voice, although I personally had NO problem with the Linda Young version.

Definitely sounds like a Newstone imitation towards the beginning, but gradually loses it until entirely losing it in the clip of episode 21.

I can't wait for tomorrow. From the clip we got of episode 21, Ayres' Freeza sounds better than I ever could've hoped for.

I don't know. At the very least, something actually notable, considering all the praise it was getting. Instead it's just Generic Background Voice #2245. Completely and utterly forgettable. It's disappointing to see that I was right and that the trend with the new voices being worse, or just the same thing done differently, in Kai has continued. :?

Love the new Freeza voice after hearing it behind some meaningful dialogue. I'm hoping the uncensored script on the home video release makes it even better, because if the Kai dub has proved anything it's that even some of the less popular voices among original version fans don't seem so bad when applied to a correctly translated script. Can't wait to see how this guy handles Freeza's angry side.

If the new Freeza sounded like, say the new Dodoria, I'd get where your coming from (even though that kind of voice is fine for Dodoria) , but generic is the last thing I think when I hear the new Freeza.

Where some people really expecting a full on English Ryusei Nakao impression?

Freeza got better near the end. I still feel kind of neutral towards it. It's not awful, the acting is good but the voice itself is not as different or unique as I thought it would sound. It does show the VA has a wide range though because if I didn't know any better I'd have some trouble figuring out if the new VA was male or female.

Zarbon sounds like a really really toned down version of TFS's version though. That's kind of amusing.

Gotta say, I judged Ayres' Freeza too quickly. When he gets rid of that rasp he actually makes a really good Freeza. He was switching back and forth in this Episode, but I feel he's going to ween his way out of it fully soon enough.

Though I was never really upset with the voice itself. But rather the fact that Linda Young was replaced for another old lady sounding voice. But it appears that that's not the case. Ayres' may very well make a fine Freeza. I look forward to hearing more.

As for Tatum as Zarbon. I called this WEEKS ago and I was right. He sounded great as Zarbon.

But I'm not digging the new Dodoria. It's not deep enough for me. Forbis was better.

Swasey will end up being a good Dodoria for Kai. He's at his best when his characters get mad, flip out and scream a bunch which is exactly what Dodoria does when he gets fooled by Krillin and again when he starts losing to Vegeta. His normal speech, like in those clips, is a little weak, but I can live with that knowing he's probably going to knock all the classic Dodoria scenes out of the park.

Ayres as Freeza is just great. After listening to those clips quite a bit more I really do enjoy the voice. It's only remotely similar to past Freeza voices, probably not to completely blindside old school dub fans who were expecting Linda Young to come back. But as we get more samples of the new Freeza it's showing us that Ayres is settling into the role rather nicely. I like that he tones it down from "creepy mode" for most of the episode and only speaks in that slithery voice when he needs to sound evil. It's great and I can't wait for more.

Good, then his scenes of killing the nameks sound be effective. The last Funi voice really phoned it in for me. When I was checking out DBZ box 2, dub track, I was treated to, " I'll kill all you NAMB-Meeeecks...!" Just didn't sell the rage at all.

I definitely hear a bit of Newstone in Ayres' portayal, in particular with the tone and the raspy-ness of some of the lines. But he's been steadily losing some of the rasp and deepening the voice a tad as the episodes have gone on, and it sounds better now. I still think it should be a bit deeper, but one thing he definitely has down is Freeza's attitude. The new script is also helping greatly in that regard.

This seals the deal, I am in love with this new Freeza. Zarbon and Dodoria have improved a bit also. Keep the awesomeness coming, dub Kai!
