What should I do? (blue bricks or wait?)

Post by jordanator » Fri Jun 25, 2010 9:21 am

Hey guys.

I just wanted to ask for some help. You see, I really want to watch and own all of Dragon Ball, as I haven't seen it yet. Now, this is where I'm stuck.

Right now, all 4 of the blue bricks are 22 pounds on Amazon.co.uk. This is cheaper, considering the last time I checked the prices, they were at least 26 pounds each. This is tempting me to buy all 4 right now.

But... I want to wait for the Dragon Box (Dragon Ball). I know they (Funimation) have not said anything relating to it, but I predict that it might come out. Now that the blue bricks are cheaper, I don't know what to do. Originally, I was just going to buy the Dragon Boxes Z, to keep me occupied. None of us have had confirmation of the DB Dragon Box, so this is why I'm asking you what to do.

Should I wait for the Dragon Box (and maybe have my hopes crushed), or buy the blue bricks whilst they are cheap? Thanks.

Wait until Otakon, by then all of the blue bricks will be out, and FUNi announce their "big" new releases there.
If they don't announce a DB dragon box then the blue bricks will probably be cheaper by then anyways

Decisions, decisions... If I were in your shoes, I'd just go and get the blue sets now. Whenever it's revealed that DB will get a DBox release, get that when it comes out, too. Think of it this way, your collection will grow and you'll get to see it all blossom. You got dudes up in here who are fans of the original version, who not only possibly have all nine season sets, but they're also getting the DBoxes AND Kai. I'm not saying for you to follow what everyone else is doing, just being real with you.

I guess it depends on how badly you wish to watch it. The Blue Bricks have their fair share of problems, but they are all minute to the actual viewing experience, in my opinion, so I've been buying them.

I guess the best answer is evaluate how much you want the series, and if you're content waiting a couple years. I doubt the bricks will go out of print.

At this point, considering FUNimation's financial situation, I don't think they're going to release a Dragon Ball Dragon Box. I'd love to be proven wrong, but it just doesn't seem likely. Less demand, more of a financial risk, it's not as popular of a series, and (although they don't seem to have a problem with this) another fecking Dragon Ball release is over saturation to the max. Then again, I have no idea how much they payed for the Z DBox masters. Maybe they got it for cheap and they actually made a pretty penny on the Z sets. It doesn't seem likely. I'd love to have all the right openings and closings, and the Dragon Box picture quality for my favorite portion of the series though.

Thanks for the help guys, and girls. :D
As a reply to how badly I want to see Dragon Ball: Really bad! I can't wait to see it! Sure, I've waited this long to see it, so I don't mind waiting, at least a year anyway. I have other things I can get/watch in the meantime, for example the Dragon Boxes Z, Death note etc.

I was thinking, the quality of the Dragon Ball Dragon Box would be similar to the Z Dragon Box, or you can say, phenomenal. Will there be much of a difference (if they did make a Dragon Ball Dragon Box) between the DB Dragon Box, and the blue bricks? In other words, what are some of the flaws of the blue bricks? I know the blue bricks are remastered, and look like modern cartoons. I don't mind that, and to me it's not a problem, although I do like grain! :)

I have one problem with waiting for Otakon. The price fluctuation. If no announcement is made at Otakon, I may possibly settle for the blue bricks. But by that time, I fear the prices of each set will have increased again, rather than decreased. Over the last couple of months, the prices have changed rapidly on Amazon.co.uk. I can remember, a while ago, a few of the blue bricks were 30 pounds each! So now that they are all 22 pounds each, I'm kinda worried, and contemplating buying them while they are cheap.

The blue bricks lack proper Japanese Title Cards, Next Episode Previews(?), and I believe they are missing some of the Opening and Closing Themes/Animations, though I'm not sure which ones.

In my opinion, while DB doesn't need a Dragon Box release as much as Z did, it definately needs it more than GT.

As for your dilemma, I'm gonna wait. There's just too much wrong with the Blue Bricks to justify my buying them. I haven't seen DB in it's entirety, but when I do, I want to see it COMPLETE, in the best quality available.

Try not to worry about the prices. I don't think they will go any higher than £22. It will only be a matter of time before they start coming down in price. Just look at the GT sets, they cost like £15 on Amazon.co.uk.

I only have Dragonball seasons one and two, so I'm going to wait until Otakon, if a DB Dbox doesn't get announced, I'll pick up the remaining season sets. :)

Well, you already know how amazing the Dragon Box quality is. The Blue bricks however, are of only sub-par acceptable quality. Considering you know what grain is, the digital remastering is there and obvious. The colors aren't altered on this set, so it naturally looks more dated than the orange bricks. Kind of an unusual yellow tint starting right around the red ribbon army saga. Probably a result of multi-generational copies, or at least that doesn't help. The picture is zoomed in slightly. There's a significant portion of footage missing from the bottom and sides and a little on the top (when compared to the Dragon Box). The Japanese audio suffers from the same faults as the orange bricks' audio. And last but not least, incorrect opening and closing themes for most of the series.

Personally, I'm waiting. Funimation screwed themselves starting the Dragon Ball blue bricks in the first place. They should have gotten the Toei masters for the Dragon Ball Dragon Box and released that instead. And yes I know the dub fans would be upset but they would still have the dub track on the set.

I'm waiting. I have no desire (or cash) to multi-dip again for a product with somewhat dodgy quality.

I'd say go for it if it's cheap, I got the whole series from Ausralia for £100, which was a bargan at the time, and because I was unsure of the US getting a remastered and uncut release, and since you haven't seen Dragon Ball, I say definitely go for it, Funi needs some great sales before they can get the Dragon Box footage. Even I'm thinking of getting the blue bricks since the madman sets are shit quality.

I have the first season blue brick because as of now that's the only way that I can get the first 13 episodes uncut. Besides that, I have all the 2-disc saga sets for Dragonball so I'm definitely going to wait until I hear whether or not they will officially release a Dragonbox for Dragonball (They better). If they don't release a Dragonbox for Dragonbal then I MAY buy the rest of the blue bricks if they are fairly cheap. But if they do release the Dragonbox then I'll get that and sell my blue brick.

Okay, as a matter of pure interest, what would you say the chances are, of Funimation announcing the Dragon Ball Dragon Box at Otakon?
We know that Funi has rights to Dbox the movies, so would there be more of a chance of the movies being announced?

Why do you post? Why?

Otakon is a (the) big(gest) anime convention in the United States. That's where the Z Dragon Boxes were announced, I believe.

I am pretty sure Anime Expo is the biggest anime convention in the states, dbz fans just tend to think so a lot since the dragon boxes were announced there.
