I agree. While I admit some of his lines and delivery would have been pretty damned humorous if the voice didn't want to make me gnaw my own ears off, it didn't feel like Kaio at all. It felt very punched up, way too over the top.linkdude20002001 wrote:Kaioh felt very out of character.

Don't shoot me, but I personally found the "I am the King Kai" gags a little funny, it was the delivery I guess.

Oh, yeah! That was another thing I liked: he called himself "The King Kai". It seems FUNi finally realized it's a title, not a name with a title.

Indeed, Kaio is a character that I won't even bother to whine about in the Kai dub. Because really, as long as Sean does his voice it's always gonna be a wackier version than the original. Unlike his Goku, dialogue and delivery was never gonna help The King Kai be the charming grandfather we all love. So if I get atleast something out of the English adaption of the character, it might as well be his one liners.

I just can't get into Kaio's voice. It's really irritating and it hurts my ears (and people thought the old Freeza was bad o_O). It's a shame, because there are aspects of the dub that I do like. He's such an important character, too. Oh well...
Re: "DragonBall Z Kai" TV Broadcast Talkback
Just be glad his screen time after the Freeza arc is even more limited.

Re: "DragonBall Z Kai" TV Broadcast Talkback
Okay, Yamcha's voice did sound like it was leaning a bit more towards a surfer voice, but it still wasn't one. I think it's just because of using "bro" or "dude," whatever he referred to Goku as, and the fact that his tone was energetic, but later bewildered. His lines in the Saiyan Saga were all of a more serious tone, and this "surfer accent" was nowhere to be heard. At least we know Sabat can get Yamcha to sound serious in those situations.
Re: "DragonBall Z Kai" TV Broadcast Talkback
I was ready to come in here and tell you guys that you were full of shit and over exaggerating about Yamcha but...nope. That's totally his old surfer tone back again. He literally didn't sound this surferesque since like season 3.
Edit: He gets slightly less surfer dude near the end of his speech.
Double Edit: Who wrote for King Kai this time around? Yeesh, it's like I'm watching the Z dub again.

First off, you and Coola implied that sounding like Michaelangelo is a bad thingMetalwario64 wrote:Perhaps instead of responding to Goku's request to at least see Frieza, he will say "No way in hell!" as opposed to "I am King Kai!", which makes no sense at all, unless the script writer was drunk, or else he needs to be booted off of writing scripts for Kai episodes...
Also, that line does make sense in the context. Goku was talking about going against him, and then he said "I am King Kai!" It was more-or-less stating that he is KING Kai, as in...the ruler of whatever galaxy that is. He was re-instating his authority by saying who he was. It's kind of like when you talk back to your parents, and they say something like "I am your father/mother!"

The first time I didn't mind but that stupid under his breath "aaahm da King Kai" he did afterwords was bizarre, unfunny and kind of dumb.

Re: "DragonBall Z Kai" TV Broadcast Talkback
So here's a question. Nicktoons is obviously going to stop playing new episodes of Dragon Ball Z Kai at some point. But I'm wondering when that is. In the bumpers, they say "Don't miss this season of Dragon Ball Z Kai" so they have to cut it off at some point. When do you think that is? Are they going to stop at the end of the Namek arc? Right around where Goku lands and beats the tar out of Recoome? Or are they going to go ahead and finish off Freeza, ending with exploding Namek.
Something tells me they have more than just a regular 30-some episode season planned though, seeing as how they're playing four new episodes a week. I really hope they at least get to the end of the Freeza fight.
Also, I smiled at the "I am the King Kai."

Haha! That's not what I meant! I'm saying that we're going back and forth about whether he has a surfer accent or not and people are saying "yes" and "no" to various degrees without actually convincing anyone of anything. We're all just saying what we're saying without actually getting anywhere. That's what I mean by, "People hear what they want to hear."Blue wrote:But...I don't want to hear a surfer accent.Kendamu wrote:At this point in the conversation, people are just hearing what they want to hear.Blue wrote:I was ready to come in here and tell you guys that you were full of shit and over exaggerating about Yamcha but...nope. I know it's not that important to say, but damn if that didn't crack me up.Blue wrote:But...I don't want to hear a surfer accent.
And now, imagine hearing it in a Butters voice.
But in all seriousness, I heard something off in Yamucha's voice too, and that was before anyone had chimed in about surfer voice. However, it was heavily overshadowed by my aforementioned disgust at Kaio's voice popping out of the aether that it fell off my radar by comparison.

Now all I picture is Sean Schemmel dressed as a lunch lady running down a dark corridor screaming "aaahm da King Kai" at the top of his lungs.Blue wrote:The first time I didn't mind but that stupid under his breath "aaahm da King Kai" he did afterwords was bizarre, unfunny and kind of dumb.
Though it really makes me wonder how much of these gags and such will differ for the uncut release. Since Nicktoons is all we have to go on for episodes past 13 right now.

Re: "DragonBall Z Kai" TV Broadcast Talkback
What is going on with the scripts? "Wicked training", "totally cool", "How totally sweet is this?"; Who the hell has been writing the recent scripts? I really hope that the script writer of today's episode is the same as yesterday's episode.
If not, then what is FUNimation thinking by trying to "cool it up"? Sure, the scripts are still accurate and whatnot, and I am thankful for that, as it is nowhere near the Z dub level of scripting, but it's still a bit annoying. Do they ever do this in any of their other dubs?
