Is Saiyan Blood going to "work"?
Is Saiyan Blood going to "work"?
First of all, do we have any confirmation that (one) it's being dubbed at all, and (two) that Sabat himself will even do it?
I have this uneasy feeling that it's going to fall on its face and come off really comical... But it could also be awesome. Honestly, Sabat might do it better than Horikawa (who is getting old, and you can hear it, in this song especially).
This is one of the types of anime songs that actually sounds cool when you dub it into English, but this particular one, only if you do it really carefully!
Characters breaking into background image songs may be normal for Japanese viewers, but the U.S. is not used to that.
(Personally I feel like they should have just left the vocals out of Over the Star in the dub. That's one of the types of anime songs that DON'T work when dubbed. The "sweet female Japanese voice" just never works when attempted in the English language, whether spoken or sung. Dubbed songs that attempt it always just sound - and forgive me for using this term but it's the only one that works - really gay.)

Well, they dubbed the opening, closing and Over The Star, so it only seems logical to assume the rest of the songs will be dubbed. No confirmation as to who will sing it though.Kai_fan wrote:First of all, do we have any confirmation that (one) it's being dubbed at all, and (two) that Sabat himself will even do it?
How do they sound like men that have a homosexual attraction to other men? Re: Is Saiyan Blood going to "work"?
Sabat himself is a trained opera singer so he can sing. The question is can he sing AS Vegeta? I think it would be best if Sabat just sang as himself, he would sound enough like Vegeta without it sounding overly cheesy as if Vegeta decided to break out into song himself. On top of that I don't think dub Vegeta singing would be a very pleasant sound even if he could accomplish that task.
Also I don't know how a female singing an insert song gives the allusion of homosexuality. I think that's a pretty immature way to describe such a thing.

Re: Is Saiyan Blood going to "work"?
I didn't think the song sounded cool in Japanese. Just because its in another language doesn't excuse the fact that Vegeta is singing. It's corny, out of character, and plain 'ol weird. I'm certainly not going to like it in English.

Having "gay" as an synonym for stupid or something you hold in discontent isn't really "cute" at all. It's closed minded bigotry or at the very best blatant ignorance.Innagadadavida wrote: Dude, don't be gay. It's just a saying. You can be gay without actually being gay.

Edit: Geeze, this is just going to keep spiraling downwards isn't it? I'm kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place. Can we take this to the PMs if you disagree or something?

Re: Is Saiyan Blood going to "work"?
"Saiyan Blood" is sort of a humorous novelty, but I was a little annoyed actually hearing it in the show. I don't expect it to be more or less annoying with Sabat's singing it.

I agree, Kai is reminding me of Dragon Ball with the consistent insert songs they aren't exactly needed. Maybe that's why the DB dub cut them out?

*slaps forehead at topic's oddities*
Anyways, I really do want to hear Sabat sing it. And if he doesn't do it in character for the show, then I demand an in character version be a bonus feature, because that would be all kinds of awesome to listen to.
But, likely, it will be in character, as that is the purpose of the song.

There. I fixed it.Kai_fan wrote:The "sweet female Japanese voice" just never works when attempted in the English language, whether spoken or sung. As for "Saiyan Blood," it already loses points for something I know is going to happen. In the original song, the word "Saiyan" is actually properly "Anglicized" for all to hear. And of course it's going to go through the usual mangling, which just makes me sad. And I agree with whoever said that Chris Sabat's Vegeta attempting to sing can be nothing but painful and leave me looking like

Yes, we get it, the dub doesn't pronounce Saiyan correctly. <_< This really is the only anime where a large number of people will complain about the smallest changed detail (whereas most other anime have a very small number of people who will complain, and the rest don't care).Gaffer Tape wrote:There. Everybody be happy.

As for the singing. On one hand, the voice is a bit rougher than we're used to for songs. But, on the other hand, Sabat is professionally trained in regards to singing, so there's some hope there. Really, it's the kind of thing we'll only be able to properly gauge by listening to, the possibilities go in every direction.

Well, boo-hoo. It hadn't been brought up in this thread, and I was under the impression it was somehow relevant to a topic about the dub version of the song "Saiyan Blood." Silly me. I guess we can keep on talking about the use or misuse of the word gay instead.Mewzard wrote:Yes, we get it, the dub doesn't pronounce Saiyan correctly. <_<

You're making up a scenario that doesn't exist. Every single entity that can have "fans" or "critics" (or any conversation about it at all) is going to have that kind of segmented reaction. You either notice it or you don't. In this case, you're only noticing it for DBZ. That's fine -- just don't pretend (or rather, delude yourself into thinking) that it's not that way for everything else on Earth.Mewzard wrote:This really is the only anime where a large number of people will complain about the smallest changed detail (whereas most other anime have a very small number of people who will complain, and the rest don't care).
As for the subject at hand, when I first heard the song, I was totally cool with it in an, "Oh, it's like Kuririn doing a mambo about marriage" kind of way. I never saw how it would fit into the show as an insert song, and I can proudly say that I still haven't -- nope, I haven't seen the episode where it's used. I kinda scratch my head over its inclusion, but I suppose I shouldn't talk out of my ass without having actually seen it. I don't see how it could work, but hey... maybe it does.

Mind you, this is the same episode that ends with Gokû busting out of the medical tank to An Ultra Super Dragon Soul, so I think it's obvious at that point they just wanted to try to get the different themes out of the way. Well, barring the Dende theme. Don't know what happened there...VegettoEX wrote:You're making up a scenario that doesn't exist. Heh, the three pillars of Dragon Ball: Goku, Vegeta... and Dende! What a wasted opportunity there!
Well, I admit I haven't seen it, but I do get the feeling that three insert songs in a single episode might have been overdoing it just a bit. Two in one seems like a bit of a stretch, honestly, but I guess I'd have to see it first before assuming.

Trust me that I understand complaining. For over a year, I've been on a podcast about Green Lantern, and am a comic reader (and participate in the forums).
All I was trying to note, really, was that, on the whole, Dragon Ball tends to be one of the series where people are a bit more particularly picky with pronunciations between fangroups. I have noticed it occurring less often in other series. I admit, I could have phrased that better.
I guess I was just tired of that particular complaint (guess I should avoid being so crabby about things when in a bad mood). I'm sorry if I seemed a little bit rude there, beg your pardon in that matter.
That said, I do wish this scene was sooner in the anime. With the episodes slowing down, it will be a while before we get to hear how the scene is done..

You know, if he did dub it, I don't know if he could fight the urge to throw a "it's over 9,000" line in there. Well, he did say "it's over 8,000" in the home release, so probably not. In conclusion, my reply is pointless.
