Japanese is pronounced exactly as it's written.
"Saiya-jin" --> "sigh" (as in "I sigh when I'm depressed") - "ya" (short "ah" sound) - "jin" (a bit closer to "gene" in sound, but closer to the alcoholic drink in length)
"Namek-sei-jin" --> "na" (like singing "Na na na") - "mek" (rhymes with "Shrek" -- and technically you hold the "k" for two beats and there's a mute, whispered "u") - "sei" (said like "say") - "jin" (a bit closer to "gene" in sound, but closer to the alcoholic drink in length)
"Karin" --> "ka" (like you're from Boston trying to say "car," but shorter) - "rin" ("r" is flipped like in Italian or "received pronunciation" English, "i" is like "sin" in in length, closer to "seen" in sound)

So is that "Ka-reen" or "Ka-rin"? Because I always pronounced it "Ka-reen" since that's how it's pronounced in the spanish eps. (It'd be kinda strange and cool to have a DB character with a name that's pronounced the same way as my real name though XD)VegettoEX wrote:"Karin" --> "ka" (like you're from Boston trying to say "car," but shorter) - "rin" ("r" is flipped like in Italian or "received pronunciation" English, "i" is like "sin" in in length, closer to "seen" in sound)
As for other names, I always call Krillin... well, "Krillin"... and Vegeta is pronounced here as "Ve-ge-ta" ("ge" as in "give") and not "Ve-ji-ta", though I always pronounced it according to the english eps.
It all depends in what language you watch the show that gets you more used to saying those pronunciations, I guess.

Goku
Kami
Kame
If you can pronounce these three names (which I'm sure everybody can) then you're basically set for life. There are no long vowels, short vowels, or any of that crap in Japanese, it's always pronounced the same. So the 'u' and 'i's in Kuririn sound exactly the same as the 'u' in Goku and the 'i' and Kami. If you ever get confused, think back to how the vowels are pronounced in those 3 names.
'R's and 'L's are blended. Make it sound like you're gonna start to pronounce the letter 'R', but then finish it off with an 'L' sound.
For names like Vegeta, it's best to simply reference the katakana spelling. Bejiita
That's about it, really...

I have the same problem with the word "Saiyan". Whenever I want to say "Saiya-jin", I pronounce it right, but "Saiyan" is technically the translation of "Saiya-jin", so occasionally I also say "Saiyan" -- but whenever I do, I want to pronounce it the dub's way ("say" rather than "sigh"). Pathetic, since I got away from the dub years ago.MajinVegeta25 wrote:I know. I've been a dubbie for so long, I still haven't got used to the original names.
BGM forever! If only more people paid attention to it... well, I intend to change that.
