Now that Funimation has the Dragon Box Z masters...

Post by pjay » Tue Jul 20, 2010 3:43 pm

So now that Funimaton has the Dragon Box Z masters, what are they going to do with the older ones that they got from Toei all those years ago? Keep them? Send them back to Toei, Or toss them?

They're probably in storage somewhere for whatever reason. No sense in throwing out what made them so rich in the first place.

They probably keep it for 'good' luck.
A Dragon Ball/Urusei Yatsura crossover would be awesome.
Having Toshio Furukawa balance between Piccolo and Ataru would be hilarious.

I'll scour the FUNi dumpsters for them.

And it failed miserably. Good show, old boy. :)

I wonder, what exactly do they do with old masters after aquiring new ones? Do they destroy them? Do they send them back to the source either before or after obtaining the replacements? Do they sell them on the black market? I guess, unless whoever handles FUNi's masters comes out and tells us exactly what they do, we can only imagine what they do, huh?

Seconded. Dragon Ball Z in Blu-Ray format would be nice (thank god I have a PS3 :P ).

I'm not too bothered about a Blu-ray release other than more episodes per disc but it wouldn't look any better than it does now and in fact make it look worse.

Yeah! A Dragon Ball Z release on Blu-Ray using Dbox footage and expensive remastering would be super cool! They could even cut out all the filler and give it a new dub! [/sarcasm]

A Blu-Ray release is completely unnecessary. There's already enough oversaturation in the market. The Dragon Boxes look fantastic enough as-is.

Yes, I am aware that Dragon Ball Kai has been released on Blu-Ray. I'm just hoping for Dragon Ball Z to get the same treatment, regardless of how fantastic the Dragon Boxes look.

I think if they released them on Blu-Ray, it's gonna look like an ass because the up scaling and everything, so no.

I'm not sure if 16mm film (which I think Z episodes use, right?) generally has more detail on Blu-ray but it's unlikely it would look any worse than DVD. FUNimation could add lossless dub audio and bump up the Japanese audio bitrate to original R2 Dragon Box levels. The could also eliminate the few instances of macroblocking in Dragon Box Three.

And I don't think there's any question that Dragon Box: The Movies would benefit from a Blu-ray release.

Why don't we just ask them on Twitter?

They would never answer anything for you on Twitter or anywhere else. If you ask them, "Are you going to release DBZ on Blu-ray?" they'll say, "STAY TUNED!!!" or if you ask what they'll do with the old masters, they'd say something like, "Who knows? Could just be something amazing!!! STAY TUNED!!!"

Anyway, I imagine they'd do with the old masters what I've done with my old release: just keep it around for memories and nostalgia. They wouldn't throw them away, what's the point of sending them to Toei, and other than that, just leaves keeping them around.

I'm telling you it's pointless. Because A) It has essentially already been done with Dragon Ball Z Kai, and B) There's much more to lose than to gain from another release of Dragon Ball Z.

It's like trading in a brand new convertible for another brand new convertible with shinier paint. Its a waste of time and money for everyone involved.

Regardless of whether FUNimation will release it or not, I still want it. Like how FUNimation probably won't release a GT Dragon Box, but a lot of people on these forums are still hoping they will. I think Dragon Ball Z can look so much better on Blu-Ray.

If they remove all the grain, it would.

No... it would look very much worse...
