"DragonBall Z Kai" TV Broadcast Talkback
Re: "DragonBall Z Kai" TV Broadcast Talkback
Kelamis would've been decent if, well, he was a bit of a better actor (or had better direction and material to work with, I don't know). I suppose I'm one of the few people who didn't mind Kirby Morrow in the role... Again, he could've done with better material and directing, as I've heard him in roles where he manages to come off as more lighthearted. As Goku, the lighthearted stuff came off as very forced, while the serious stuff was maybe a bit too serious.

To me Sabat's Piccolo is his definitive performance in this dub.penguintruth wrote:I feel like Sabat is definitely the VA who has improved the most. Though I've said for a while that his Vegeta is potentially decent, I never thought I'd like his Piccolo or Yamucha.

I still maintain that Kelamis was far superior to either Corlett (too stiff) or Schemmel (too rough, especially in Z). While a bit inconsistent, he has the "Goku sound" down pretty well. Better than Schemmel, anyway. If you're annoyed, it's because you find Goku annoying.

How about your feelings on why Nail is only fairly decent?

Well, the character himself is only "fairly decent". He's just kinda there.

Watching tonight's episode.
I see Schemmel is back to his Superman voice.

I'm not so sure about this Ginyu's voice. On the one hand, he sounds very "drill sergeant" which sort of fits, but sometimes he does this thing with his voice where it's very strained and painful sounding. I could go either way on this voice.
Jeice just sounds laughably bad, like this is a voice that actually got worse from Z. That makes me very disappointed.

I despised Sabat's voice role in Funi's Z dub (except Purunga) and was disappointed when he was announced as returning for Kai.MR.Mark wrote:
I feel Sabat has more so, but like I said it could be his roles having more depth.
But now after seeing what he's done with Vegeta and especially Piccolo, I can tolerate him and *gasp* even like his voices at times. Something I never thought I would do. So, Sabat has improved more than Sean but he had a bigger scope for improvement, because I didn't despise Sean's Goku in Z, but didn't like it either.
Having said that, in Funi's Kai dub, I still like Sean's Goku more than any of Sabat's roles so far. So it's the same situation as Z, ie I feel Sean is still the better actor but this time I don't despise Sabat.
I never thought I'd ever like Sabat's Vegeta, but Sabat's improved so much that at times I actually like his Vegeta and that's going from downright despising it before. I think Sabat did a better job with Piccolo. I potentially still don't like Sabat's Yamcha but I need to watch more of it before I make my mind up. Though I feel Yamcha should've been recast in Funi's dub. Someone else can easily do a better job than Sabat.penguintruth wrote:I feel like Sabat is definitely the VA who has improved the most. That was an interesting read. It's nice to know that Ocean's crew watched the Japanese version from time to time when they were producing the Saban episodes. Then again, Ocean were not responsible for the edits and censors, those were decided by Saban and FUNimation for the early episodes. I always maintained that the voice work for the original Saiyan and Namek episodes was excellent but the script and edits could've been better.
It's interesting that Kelamis wanted to be around for the whole series, but when he got that opportunity via ABGroupe/Westwood he did the Android and Imperfect Cell episodes, then stopped to focus on his comedy tours.
Kelamis' speaking voice improved when he returned for the Android-Imperfect Cell episodes. Some of his screams and battle cries are very similar to Nozawa's. So if you find Nozawa's screams easy on the ears, you should find Peter's screams easy as well.Piccolo Daimaoh wrote:I personally thought that Peter Kelamis was the worst English Gokū (Sean Schemmel being the best). His voice for the character was just grating to listen to. It sounded very unatural and cartoony. It just was that bad, I wouldn't have been at all surprised if he said something like "golly gee" or "gee wilerkers". His high pitched screams weren't exactly easy on the ears either.
Someone on youtube edited Ocean's audio to match the scene of the Kaiokenx20 Goku did against Freeza and they used movie 2's Kaioken. When I first watched it I almost thought it was Masako Nozawa, it's that close. It also helps that Kelamis pronounced Kaioken correctly.
Well Ian Corlett and Peter Kelamis left, Ocean couldn't stop them. It would've been consistent if Ian wanted to continue voicing Goku.Piccolo Daimaoh wrote:This is essentially one of my main problems with the Ocean dub; the Gokū voices are too inconsistent. First we had Ian Corlett, who was a decent voice for the character. He was certainly tolerable as Gokū. Then he gets switched to someone who's significantly worse than him and then again, to someone who's even worse than that. I would have loved the Ocean dub a lot more if Ian Corlett had being playing Gokū the whole way through.
But you said you thought Peter was the worst Goku and now you're saying Kirby is?
Ian Corlett, Peter Kelamis and Kirby Morrow are better than Schemmel. Although I like Schemmel's Goku in Kai, I still think that Ian, Peter and Kirby outdo him.
Re: "DragonBall Z Kai" TV Broadcast Talkback
It's such a relief to see the worst dubbed episodes finally get a really good dub. It's funny watching this and then watching the Z counterpart and seeing how far they've come since 1999. Especially Schemmel.

I watched some of the season three episodes before I watch Kai's dub of those episodes, so I can see how much they really improved. And damn, the season 3 dub is poor, I wonder how the producers could've allowed such rubbish to be passed over for airing. Then I remember....it's FUNimation
Jeice sounds better than what Sabat did in season 3.

Re: "DragonBall Z Kai" TV Broadcast Talkback
My favorite parts of the original dub were the constant yelling Goku was doing while Ginyu had him in an arm lock along with Goku saying "strong power!", and when Vegeta ran off and Goku said "AAAAAAAAhhhh-Naaaaaaaoooooouuuuuu!!!!!" I kept laughing during this Kai episode joking about how the dub is now "too good" because unfortunately I can't get the old dub out of my head! Hopefully repeated Kai dub viewings will remedy this.
I can't wait until the next episode where in the old dub they changed Goku worrying about what Chi-Chi would think if he came back looking like Ginyu, into a generic "I'm not finished by a long shot" dialogue, ending the scene with a ridiculous "IIIIt's NOT OVEEEEEEERRRRRRRRR!!!". That was hilarious, especially the "The pain's too strong and I don't think I can go ooooon!!!!" and the "No, I... WILL NOT... Be. Defeated this way!" as opposed to the Japanese version's "Wait, Krillin and Gohan are unaware that it's not me!" or something along those lines.
The Japanese music makes that scene especially hilarious in both languages because it's this dark, downbeat track, which makes Goku's worrying about Chi-Chi killing him for looking like Ginyu hilarious, along with the old dub's horribly overdone, hammed up dialogue and delivery.
What is people's problem with Schemmel deepening his voice a bit during his more somber and serious moments? Nozawa did the exact same thing quite often, even at times getting deeper than Schemmel has as of late (especially in the Japanese version of Kai). He's not even getting "Sword of Justice" dialogue in Kai this time, which was really the only time he ever sounded "like Superman".
Schemmel was typically deeper in this episode because he has a lot of serious moments in this episode. During the lighthearted moments (Ginyu ultra fighting pose!!!), he sounded as childish and lighthearted as ever, and during the serious moments, he appropriately deepened it and cut back on the happy-go-lucky as Nozawa does. Just as he has done throughout the rest of Kai.

Huh? I seriously do not understand this "criticism". Every time he isn't super high pitched happy Goku, people will criticize him as sounding like "Superman", which he definitely does not. That is seriously "Big Green" dub Goku, and at random times due to the script FUNimation's Z dub (along with Hebert's Saiyaman, which is intentional). He actually reminds me heavily of a male Nozawa in Kai's dub, especially his fighting noises and ki releasing sounds, which are definitely Nozawa in tone.Cowboy Dev wrote:Watching tonight's episode.

I love how "way" is used twice in that sentence, so it sounds quite redundant!
It sounds so much like a poorly written Superhero comic during Season 3, especially the early parts.

I thought Sean's "man you dirty dog" in the old dub was amusing because the delivery was so off, as well as the line itself.

Me and a friend had a laugh at Krillin's "Why didn't I become a shoe salesman?" line when it aired the first time. Although we could easily tell that season 3 had a lot of cheesy, ridiculous, facepalming, mondo uncool pun intended dialogue, comparing it to Kai makes it seem even worse.Metalwario64 wrote:My Dad actually cracked up at that line when we were watching Z together for the first time.RazorX wrote:I thought Sean's "man you dirty dog" in the old dub was amusing because the delivery was so off, as well as the line itself.

The strange thing is though, in episodes 72 and 73, he was actually starting to get pretty decent, but I guess only having about 2 or 3 lines per episode for the next 13 episodes fucked that up for him. But then, once you got to the SSJ transformation, he became more or less decent and only got better from there. When you look at the original version of the 20x Kaioken scene and compare it to the flashback version from (I think) episode 105, it's like night & day.Metalwario64 wrote:"Rghhh I... just. wish there was a way to warn Krillin and Gohan about what's coming their way..."

Jheese has gotten much better now that his accent seems to be almost nonexistent, it's just to bad most of his deliveries are a little over the top. However his laugh when Ginyu caught Goku was by far night and day from Sabat's painful forced laughs of "season 3". Kai dub Jheese is still far better than the Z dub overall, though we all know the Kai dub easily trumps everything about the Z dub anyway.
Speaking of Sabat's laughs, I quite enjoyed his "have fun Kakarott, muhahahahaa!" , it was deliciously villainous. Sean's "Vegeta, you double crosser!" was very immature and Goku like as well. Ginyu himself was very meh in this episode, we'll see how he does with the body swaps.

I know, which is my point, we'll see how Sean will do as Nail get's his defining character moment as a meat-shield next episode. No, what would really be hilarious is if Sean started screaming at the same unfathomably high pitch he did in the Piccolo Jr. fight and the Z version of him getting squashed by Ape Vegeta.MR.Mark wrote:Jheese has gotten much better now that his accent seems to be almost nonexistent, it's just to bad most of his deliveries are a little over the top.
