Nope, pretty sure there are many other Funi dub fans who feel the same way.

Holy shit, solid episode across the board! I've said it before and I'll say it again, Ayres IS Freeza. With so many other characters, I say if only they'd tone down this or that, not with Ayres. I continue to have absolutely no beefs with him, what a condescending elitist prick his Freeza is. How amazing is it to watch my favorite villain, but in English, done flawlessly?

The writers are once again to be commended for the perfectly adapted dialogue for Freeza, but of course without Ayres to sell it ,it could of fallen completely flat with an inappropriate voice.

I enjoyed Sean's noble warrior Nail getting his ass kicked, and damn, is Monica ever cute when Bulma is terrified.

My favorite part is her rambling when she's throwing dirt at what turns out to be Kuririn.

Okay, in this scene where Frieza shows up at Grand Elder's Place, he sounds like Linda Young without the obvious feminine quality.
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

Indeed, everyone was pretty damn solid in this episode.

Christopher Ayres has officially surpassed Linda Chambers-Young at first form Freeza, well at least her season 3 first form Freeza. Just 2 months ago I never thought I'd utter those words, damn what a lucky break FUNimation had to have found someone like Chris Ayres to voice Freeza.

However, Linda's best work came after Freeza transformed, especially his final form. At this point I'm not convinced that Chris will be better, I hope he is but I'd be satisfied if he's at least as good as Linda, in his own way.

I still can't decide if Chris Ayres' Freeza is better than Pauline Newstone's Freeza.

I'd say he sounds like Pauline Newstone.

Chris Ayres' Freeza could give us a good idea of how Pauline Newstone would've handled Freeza's transformations. Both voices have been strikingly similar since episode 19.

I'd say he sounds like the character Freeza, but in English.

With the exception of his first freaken line when Freeza was introduced. Ayres's Freeza sounds absolutely nothing in voice, and certainly in delivery, than past "Freezas".

There is a lot less "I'm playing a generic lizzardly alien" with Ayres these days.

As for Nail...my oh my, they should have recasted.

It seems like for Bulma, they replaced Tiffany Vollmer's shrillness for Monica Rial's raspyness when screaming. Eww. Note: I said screaming, not yelling.

Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!

Sean has only a few more chances now that Nail's arc of "meat shield" has almost evolved to "excuse for a power up" The legacy of Nail most be preserved!

The pitch and tone of the Ayres' voice is still as close to Newstone as it was when Freeza was first introduced. However this should be no surprise because both voices are androgynous therefore it's natural they sound similar.

Ayres brings in Nakao's qualities in combination with the above mentioned pitch, and the result is good. That is why I said Ayres has surpassed Linda's season 3 First form Freeza. I haven't heard much of Linda's 2005 redub of the first form. I might watch it to see the improvements over her season 3 voice.

As I mentioned before, Linda's best work came after Freeza transformed, in particular his final form. It won't be easy for Ayres to beat or even match it, but he's significantly exceeded my expectations so I'm feeling a bit more optimistic about him being able to deliver a solid performance in the post transformation stages compared to before I heard him.

Note how I said without the obvious feminine quality. Basically Linda Young if she were actually a guy.

Wrong, Ayres's sounds androgynous at times, yes, but I always knew Newstone was female with her Freeza voice.

No, not at all actually, in voice and delivery, and overall acting ability.
jjgp1112 wrote:It seems like for Bulma, they replaced Tiffany Vollmer's shrillness for Monica Rial's raspyness when screaming.
They did more than that, they replaced one VA with a MUCH more talented one.

The next episode preview deserves a special mention, it was good. I think this might be the first time the characters addressed us, the audience, as opposed to chatting amongst themselves over scenes which usually have nothing to do with what is being said. FUNimation needs to do more previews where the characters or the narrator addresses the audience, like most of the recaps.

I haven't heard any females which sound like Newstone's Freeza. Newstone and Ayres both sound androgynous. It's one reason why both voices fit the character.

But enough of her, er, "femininity" still came out that I wasn't fooled by what sex was doing the voice.
