I think Dragon Ball Z can look so much better on Blu-Ray.
If they remove all the grain, it would.
Grain is part of the picture.

Agreed. Don't disrespect the film!

Well, FUNimation are generally idiots who don't know what they're doing (either that, or they're intentionally making poor decisions), so they'll probably toss them.

Kai has shown otherwise. Also, how would it be stupid for them to throw out their butchered masters when they have the best masters the show has ever seen available to them?

What's the sate of Toei's film, anyway? I mean the PHYSICAL film, and not the masters from which the Dragon Box footage was scanned. Furthermore, what resolution were the frames scanned in?

My guess is that they didn't scan the film in a high enough resolution to produce a proper HD master. Physical FILM has a much higher resolution than the Dragon Box masters, but to get to that they would have to actually have to start over again from square one with the original film masters, no?

I'm pretty sure a proper Blu-Ray release couldn't possibly start with Funimation. It would have to start with Toei, and considering their asinine policies toward home video releases? Seeing something anytime soon seems unlikely to me.

Well, the sets did come out in 2003, and there probably wasn't any need to make it in HD back then.

I don't know, the Dragon Box Z's look fine unscaled to 1080p on my TV at least.

As far as we know, you're exactly right. IIRC, the Dragon Boxes were reported to have been worked on in standard definition. If that's indeed the case, Toei would have to do a whole new cleanup job before we see a real HD release.
I can see their parachutes.
