I thought Ayres was great in tonight's episode when he started to get irritated with the Grand Elder and Nail. Really can't wait to get done with the Ginyu fight so we can hear some of the awesome Freeza lines when he's fighting everyone while Goku heals.

I'm loving the new Freeza, he finally feels like a threat to me. The only time Linda Young felt like a threat to me was when Freeza was in his 4th form. Chris Ayres' Freeza is so powerful to me he feels like someone who could control such a vast empire like he does. Linda Young's Freeza felt like a B-movie bad guy, but that could be the script.

The combination of Ayes' fantastic acting and the reworked FUNI script really did it for me. Nothing can replace the creepiness of Ryûsei Nakao, but Ayres has come close for me.

If by some hellish reason I couldn't listen to Ryusei Nakao's performance anymore, I'd definitely be fine settling with Ayres' interpretation.

I'll go a bold step further and claim that Ayres performance as Freeza is so good, that by the end of the day, I will come to love his interpretation just as much as Nakaos. Chris is Freeza in English just as much as Ryusei is in Japanese, I'm just not that type of fan to put Japanese actors on pedestals unless they truly deserve it, the fact that they "did it first" isn't always enough for me.

There's nothing wrong with being passionate over performances, but the fact of the matter is that a dub, especially of a childrens cartoon ,can be matched or even topped in the acting department. As impossible as that may seem to some anime fans out there, also, The Cowboy Bebop dub agrees fully with my statement.

Kind of off-topic but why does everyone always use Cowboy Bebop as an example of a good dub that surpasses the original? I mean, come on, nearly all of Bandai's dubs are just that good, Outlaw Star comes to mind.

Anyway, I don't expect English VAs to sound just like their Japanese counterparts. I'll come out and say that anyone who thinks this way is absolutely retarded in their expectations of a good dub. As long as their performance fits with the character, then that's all that matters. Chris does that perfectly. His tone, wordings, everything is perfect for Freeza. Definitely one of the best voices in the Kai dub.

Did Bandai do the Gurren Lagaan dub? Because that one is great, too. A little heavy with the cursing...but still just as good as the original.

Eh? The Gundam dubs are in pretty bad shape. 00 would probably be a lot better than 'somewhat good' if it didn't regurgitate the same five actors for every single Gundam dub recorded at Westwood. Wing (stiff acting, cartoony voices, two different guys voicing every background character), Mobile Suit Gundam (stiff acting), and the SEED stuff is also pretty awful. Brad Swaile and Michael Kopsa are well casted as Amuro and Char but the former is regurgitated in every single series that the Vancouver pool is used for. Seriously, Swaile's voiced five Gundam pilots. That's four too many. It's an odd case of Sabat-itis, except Sabat plays more roles and all are in the same continuity.

Ayres' Freeza is getting better and better. I practically wept tears of joy at his performance in Thursday's episode. Of course, it helps that the script is so good now, too, but for a few moments, when Freeza was getting geniunely angry, I got goosebumps at Ayres' delivery.

The joke isn't really funny when Setsuna is his fifth Gundam pilot. Crossover games would be espicially headache-inducing (which is why I wish they'd use the original voice actors >_<)

Well I bring up Bebop beacuse it' s easily one that sticks out that outdoes the original in many areas, can't really say that about many other dubs, especially Gundam wing. I have nostalgia for it and all, but there is quite a bit of meh performances and a lot of repetitive repeating voices from a lack of voice actors. To me it's in the "good enough" category, since I'm the type of fan that really needs to love a show or movie in an obsessive way to favor the Japanese version over all else.

I'm a fan of dubbing as an art form in general anyway, unless it's atrocious.

Earlier today I tried imagining some of the new Freeza lines being read by Linda Young's portrayal and it seriously just sounded wrong. I don't think the correct tone would have come out at all. She could not sound caniving or formal or even creepy at all. Just trying to be intimidating like a school bully. Key word "trying". I know I'm beating a dead horse, but my point is, even if this great new script was given to her, it still could absolutely not compare to the improvement we've received. Ayres deserves a lot of credit.

I totally agree with you there. I recently watched the first few episodes dubbed for the first time in forever, and the acting is pretty wooden at times. It's definitely watchable, but Spike and Jet are really the only consistently good performances. The whole "greatest dub ever" thing is 100% nostalgia, I'd say. Most modern dubs blow it out of the water (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Death Note, Fullmetal Alchemist/FMA: Brotherhood, etc). I think most people enjoy that dub because the characters aren't Japanese; the English voices make it seem more authentic I guess. Same deal as Trigun and it's Old West-ish setting, I guess.

On topic, damn I loved Freeza in the newest episode. Especially while he was talking to Saichoro and Nail. It was nice to hearing him get a little ticked.

I'm with penguintruth on this one. The 0079 dub is legitimately good across the board. Fitting actors, almost completely correct script across the board aside from a few instances where a few minor terms were changed due to the actual words used being rather Engrishy. As far as I'm concerned, Bandai knocked it out of the park on that dub and I think they knew they had to do an awesome job on it seeing how they'll probably never sell a subtitled DVD set of that series (although now that we're getting the Dragon Box Z releases, it might not be out of the question).

The main reason I say Bebop outdoes the original is that many of the key players in the Japanese version sound downright generic compared to the dub. With the possible exception of Faye, I don't think I prefer any of the Japanese actors over the English version.

Can't say I really agree with you there. Especially when the main villain sounds completely wooden and generic in English (compared to Vicious as portrayed by the great Norio Wakamoto!).

Incidentally, Norio Wakamoto played the voice of Cell in Dragon Ball Z. Am I on topic now?
