The Japanese DBZ

Post by Bejiita » Mon May 23, 2005 9:10 am

Ok, no one go mad for this topic, I can't seem to think of anything else to talk about, my last topic about GT got closed due to off-topic chatter, hopefully this won't. A topic similar to this probably has been discussed in another place and time during the time DBZ has been among us, so no flaming please.

Ok, so just quick here, what does the majority of people here watch, the japanese DBZ or the dubbed version? Just so I now how many poeple can read and relate to what is written here.

A lot of people prefer the dub, but I would rather watch the original one, it feels like a completely differetn thing you're watching, does anyone agree? Even if it's the uncut dub you are watching, the japanese one still feels different, it's definately the music, and where the silence is there too, even if it's a kids show, the japenese musical score makes it seem a whoole lot different, no stupid sounds where silence is supposed to be, it just reduces the severety of the situation, no intensity at all.

Like, when Frieza asks Goku for help, that is way better in Japanese, Frieza's voice actually sounds like unless Goku does something fast he will die, plus the only things he says are help me and please, and the dub he says a few more things.

That moves to the next subject, voices, now I'm not hating the dub, Vegeta's voice isn't like the original at all but now that we've gotten used to the voice, it wouldn't be like Vegeta if it was changed to a more manly voice, although it improves for the future episodes, and Frieza is a woman, come on man, I actually watched the dub before the japanese version, and I first thought Frieza was female, with the black lipstick style lips and all. The voice though, and King Kai, or should I say Queen Kai, the fat queen kai, I always thought differently about he's voice, and after hearing him in Japanese I'm thinking where the hell did that squeaky aggrovating voice come from?! Ok, and Goku is a woman's voice, and yet I still prefer it that way, I have gotten used to the dub one too though.

I guess when Vegeta laughs picturing Chris Sabat's face while he's doing it makes it seem funny and very not Vegeta, the Saiyan Prince was born with a chicken bone in he's throat and therefore speaks as if he were choking. I'm joking.

Anyway, moving on to the episode translations, ok, many things that are said in the dub are just plain stupid, forget the next dimension stuff, I'm talking about King Kai telling jokes when he's not supposed to, like the Frieza saga, how many saiyans to fix a light bulb, ha ha, not funny, he also does some kind of rap while Goku bitch slaps Frieza back and forth which makes me feel embarrassed for the people who (a) thought up the idea and (b) the woman who done it! The narrator also goes on a bit, he Americanizes the show too much, DRAGON BAAALL ZEEEEEE! Let's not forget 'Krillin's in da house!'.

Anyway, I'm not here to take the piss out of Funimation, just to talk about the many reasons why the original makes the dub look bad. And for anyone who disagrees with me and wants to go on about how Funi done a great job and for me to shut up, please, I have already said, I'm not hating the dub, just comparing.

There's no "the dub". FUNi isn't the only company in the world that has dubbed DBZ.

Wow, that's quite a shocking statement.

I find it funny that JPN version fans complain that US Frieza sounds like a woman and US Goku sounds like a man while US fans complain JPN Goku sounds like a girl and JPN Frieza sounds more manly.

Anyways, I prefer the US dub. The corny dialogue, IMO, is preferable to hearing Japanese.

I disagree, every other anime I have watched I have preferred in Japanese. With the possible exception of Ghost in the Shell. Once I purchase DBZ on DVD I fully expect to enjoy the japanese version more.

edit:

Sorry, to answer the question I watch the dub at the moment, but only because I dont have access to the japanese version yet.

I prefer the Japanese version. Of course, I watch subs a lot so I've gotten used to Japanese voices. They don't bother me at all.

But I also love the Funi dub. I've watched that countless times, and I've gotten used to it so much that I don't mind any of the voices at all. The only one I kind of dislike is Kaiou-sama's voice.

A thing I find funny is that while lots of Americans complain about the dub, some Japanese exchange students I've known have not only said that they love it, but it helped them to learn English.

I don't prefer either. I always thought of them as two different shows; the original produced in Japan, and Funimation's adaption in America. That being said, I like them both very well. I like Funi's VAs', even though it took time for them to perfect the voices. Mr.Sabat is a very talented man, and Tiffani Cook really made Bulma her own in my opinion.

I've always been fond of Faulconer's work, especially the earlier stuff from the Freeza saga. I really feel something when listening to his music, it's like the music is there to tell a story, and it defines the characters and moves the plot along. This is an interesting perspective to view, when you look back at the original. The original seems to use the plot and characters to move the story along, while the music is just secondary. It's nice to see the two different methods being utilized. And of course the scripts are tight in both as well.

Well, admittably a lot of american english dialects & accents grind on my ears.. and I prefer to watch stuff in it's original form by default, so it's the japanese version for me by a longshot.

But hey, tastes differ, so if someone prefers the Funimation version, or the french/German dub or whichever, more power to them I say.

This is a really, really, really pointless topic.
